Linked Open Data Management Services: A Comparison
<p>Thanks to a variety of software services, it has never been easier to produce, manage and publish Linked Open Data. But until now, there has been a lack of an accessible overview to help researchers make the right choice for their use case. This dataset release will be regularly updated to reflect the latest data published in a comparison table developed in Google Sheets [1]. The comparison table includes the most commonly used LOD management software tools from NFDI4Culture to illustrate what functionalities and features a service should offer for the long-term management of FAIR research data, including:</p> <ul> <li>ConedaKOR</li> <li>LinkedDataHub</li> <li>Metaphacts</li> <li>Omeka S</li> <li>ResearchSpace</li> <li>Vitro</li> <li>Wikibase</li> <li>WissKI</li> </ul> <p>The table presents two views based on a comparison system of categories developed iteratively during workshops with expert users and developers from the respective tool communities. First, a short overview with field values coming from controlled vocabularies and multiple-choice options; and a second sheet allowing for more descriptive free text additions. The table and corresponding dataset releases for each view mode are designed to provide a well-founded basis for evaluation when deciding on a LOD management service. Integrated Statistical Indicators from Scottish Linked Open Government Data
<p>Integrated statistical indicators that were retrieved from the official Scottish data portal in order to facilitate the exploitation of Machine Learning methods in Open Government Data. Data include 60 statistical indicators from seven categories such as health and social care, housing, and crime and justice. The indicators refer to the 6,976 “2011 data zones” of Scotland, while the year of reference is 2015. Data are ready to be used by the research community, students, policy makers, and journalists and give rise to plenty of social, business, and research scenarios that can be solved using Machine Learning technologies and methods.</p>

Linked Open Data for the maritime domain
<p>Linked Data in this data set have been compiled from diverse data sources providing information about Trade and Transport locations, protected areas, surveillance data of vessels and vessel characteristics. Data have been transformed into triples according to the vesselAI ontology, using <a href="http://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/212138612.pdf">RDF-Gen</a> . All geometries are provided using <a href="http://www.opengis.net/ont/geosparql">OGC</a> terms. The vesselAI ontology documentation is available<a href="http://83.212.101.70/vesselAI_ontology.html"> here</a> .</p> <p>In a nutshell, this data set comprises data from the following sources:</p> <p>1. AIS messages of moving objects retrieved from <a href="https://ais-public.kystverket.no/ais-download/">Norwegian Coastal Administration's SafeSeaNet</a> solution, combined with data provided by the <a href="http://web.ais.dk/aisdata/">Danish Maritime Authority</a>. Each record contains the coordinates of the vessel, a timestamp, an identifier for the vessel, its speed and heading. Typically, each vessel reports this information by sending an AIS message every few seconds. Each reported position is also annotated with the corresponding weather conditions according to Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) (files: reconstructed_traj.7z, ais202101_part1.7z, ais202101_part2.7z)</p> <p><br> . The weather variables currently considered as relative to the movement of vessels are:</p> <ul> <li> '10m_u_component_of_wind',</li> <li> '10m_v_component_of_wind',</li> <li> '2m_dewpoint_temperature',</li> <li> '2m_temperature',</li> <li> 'mean_sea_level_pressure',</li> <li> 'mean_wave_direction',</li> <li> 'mean_wave_period',</li> <li> 'precipitation_type',</li> <li> 'sea_surface_temperature',</li> <li> 'total_precipitation'</li> </ul> <p>2. Vessel characteristics retrieved from online sources, combined with information about departure and destination seaports. Regions of interest in the maritime domain include fishing areas, endangered species habitat areas, exclusive economic zones (EEZ), Natura2000 protected areas. <p>The catalogue of the Biblioteca Virtual Miguel de Cervantes contains about 200,000 records which were originally created in compliance with the MARC21 standard. The entries in the catalogue have been recently migrated to a new relational database whose data model adheres to the conceptual models promoted by the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), in particular, to the FRBR and FRAD specifications.</p> <p>The database content has been later mapped, by means of an automated procedure, to RDF triples which employ mainly the RDA vocabulary (Resource Description and Access) to describe the entities, as well as their properties and relationships. In contrast to a direct transformation, the intermediate relational model provides tighter control over the process for example through referential integrity, and therefore enhanced validation of the output. This RDF-based semantic description of the catalogue is now accessible online.</p>

Data for: Linking vertical movements of large pelagic predators with distribution patterns of biomass in the open ocean
<p>Many predator species make regular excursions from near-surface waters to the twilight (200-1,000 m) and midnight (1,000-3,000 m) zones of the deep pelagic ocean. While the occurrence of significant vertical movements into the deep ocean has evolved independently across taxonomic groups, the functional role(s) and ecological significance of these movements remain poorly understood. Here, we integrate results from satellite tagging efforts with model-predictions of deep prey layers in the North Atlantic Ocean to determine if prey distributions are correlated with vertical habitat use across 12 species of predators. Using 3D movement data for 344 individuals that traversed nearly 1.5 million km of pelagic ocean in >42,000 days, we found that nearly every tagged predator frequented the twilight zone and many made regular trips to the midnight zone. Using a predictive model, we found clear alignment of predator depth use with the expected location of deep pelagic prey for at least half of the predator species. We compared high-resolution predator data with shipboard acoustics and selected representative matches that highlight the opportunities and challenges in the analysis and synthesis of these data. While not all observed behavior was consistent with estimated prey availability at depth, our results suggest that deep pelagic biomass likely has high ecological value for a suite of commercially important predators in the open ocean. Careful consideration of the disruption to ecosystem services provided by pelagic food webs is needed before the potential costs and benefits of proceeding with extractive activities in the deep ocean can be evaluated.</p>

Fedora4: The Open Linked Data Platform
<p>Presentation at Open Repositories 2015 (OR2015), the 10th International Conference on Open Repositories, Indianapolis, Indiana, in session P1A: Linked Open Data (LOD). Note that high quality video files for this talk were not obtainable, so some video quality problems may be noticed.</p> <p>Linked Open Data has moved from being a buzzword to a fundamental building block of modern repositories and information systems. Its explosion, taking in this domain the form of scholarly and scientific datasets, publications, annotations, cultural heritage descriptions and other repository-based content, offers unprecedented opportunity for scientific and societal advancement. It is the interconnections that integrate systems and resources, however, that turn disparate ideas into unanticipated solutions.</p> <p>The Open Repositories community largely understands the value of linked data. The trouble has been in answering the question of “how?” to do this together, rather than "why?" do it at all. In order to be effective, we need to have solid guidelines, common practices, and well specified toolsets and products. A confluence of developments has opened the door to exactly this.</p> <p>In October of 2012, the initial W3C working draft of the Linked Data Platform 1.0 (LDP) document was published[2]. In July of 2012, the demand for a next-generation Fedora platform was channeled into the Fedora 4 (F4) project, which at the time was termed Fedora Futures. The alignment of these two stars set in motion events that provided both requirements and solutions for the community.</p>
