Root fungi isolated from common Louisiana marsh plants 2017-18.

Nearly all plants are colonized by fungal endophytes, and a growing body of work shows that both environment and host species shape plant-associated fungal communities. However, few studies place their work in a phylogenetic context to understand endophyte community assembly through an evolutionary lens. Here we collected data to investigate environmental and host effects on root endophyte assemblages in coastal Louisiana marshes. We isolated and sequenced culturable fungal endophytes from roots of three-four dominant plant species from each of three sites of varying salinity. We provide data on abundance and taxonomy of the isolated fungal taxa as well as phylogenetic diversity (mean phylogenetic distance, MPD) and phylogenetic composition (based on MPD).

Mangrove biomass and root architecture in recycled glass sand, SE Louisiana 2023-2024

As coastal regions experience accelerating land loss, artificial substrates may be useful in restoration efforts to replenish sediment and facilitate plant colonization. Recycled glass sand is a potential artificial substrate for marsh building due to its sustainability, availability, and similarity to natural substrates. However, differences in texture and availability of microbiota necessitate investigating how it affects plant growth. We tested the effect of three substrates (conventionally used dredged river sand, recycled glass sand, and a 50:50 mix) and inoculation with natural soil microbes on the biomass and root architecture of black mangrove (Avicennia germinans) in a 5.5 month greenhouse experiment.

Physarum polycephalum Repeated Maze Honors Thesis, Tulane University, SE Louisiana 2024-2025

We conducted an experimental maze study from January to March, 2025, on Physarum polycephalum at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. We collected data on changes in locomotive behavior as P. polycephalum repeatedly solved the same maze. From daily photographs of growth, we recorded path choice, contamination presence and location, number of times P. polycephalum grew directly over maze walls, how many of the four dead-ends P. polycephlaum grew down, and efficiency through surface area covered. Data collection is complete. We found a significant increase in efficiency, and a significant decrease in both dead-end paths and wall jumping, as maze repetitions increased. This points to evidence of information storage and retrieval, and therefore cognitive processes such as memory, within the single-cellular protist Physarum polycephalum.

A database of published mangrove articles for coastal Louisiana, USA

Mangroves are being increasingly recognized as natural climate solutions for the range of ecosystem services they provide. In North America, one of the northern range limits of mangroves is found in coastal Louisiana, USA, where in recent decades, mangroves have been expanding into wetlands formerly dominated by salt marsh primarily due to decreases in the frequency and severity of winter freeze events. While reviews focused on mangrove ecology that include coastal Louisiana within a broader geographic scope have been conducted, no systematic review has focused on what is known about mangrove ecology across coastal Louisiana, a region that contains the expansive Mississippi River Delta. To fill this knowledge gap, we conducted a systematic review to highlight the breadth of mangrove research topics that have been studied in coastal Louisiana and identify emerging and future research opportunities. We identified four main research topics: (1) mangrove expansion, (2) freeze tolerance, (3) coastal restoration, and (4) disturbance. We also identified geographic biases in where mangrove research has been conducted, with a focus around the heavily industrialized Port Fourchon/Grand Isle area.

Oyster Microcystis aeruginosa feeding experiments, Lafayette-Louisiana, 2021-2022

To determine how the presence of the potentially harmful cyanobacteria M. aeruginosa affects oyster feeding, we quantified clearance rates, pseudofeces production, and pseudofeces composition across two feeding experiments conducted with a non-toxic strain. The first experiment consisted of bialgal feeding experiments where single oysters were fed treatments consisting of 1) only M. aeruginosa, 2) only the diatom Thalassiosira pseudonana, or 3) a 50/50 mix of the two species. To quantify effects of M. aeruginosa on oyster feeding under more environmentally relevant conditions — which includes numerous phytoplankton prey options and the presence of inorganic particles — a second feeding experiment was conducted using a natural phytoplankton community collected from a local estuary and oyster habitat. This natural community was then used to create two treatments, 1) an amended treatment where non-toxic M. aeruginosa was added, and 2) a natural treatment where only M. aeruginosa growth medium without cells was added.

Disturbance and recovery of salt marsh arthropod communities in Louisiana and Mississippi following the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Oil spills represent a major environmental threat to coastal wetlands, which provide a variety of critical ecosystem services to humanity. The U.S. Gulf of Mexico is a hub of oil and gas exploration and production with recognized consequences on intertidal habitats, such as the salt marsh. Following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we sampled the marine invertebrate and the terrestrial arthropod community found in stands of Spartina alterniflora, the most abundant plant in coastal salt marshes, in 2010 as oil was washing ashore and a year later in 2011. In 2010, intertidal crabs and terrestrial arthropods (insects and spiders) were suppressed by oil exposure even in seemingly unaffected stands of plants; however, Littoraria snails appeared unaffected. One year later, crab and arthropods appeared to have largely recovered. Our work is the first attempt that we know of assessing vulnerability of the salt marsh arthropod community to oil exposure, and it suggests that arthropods are both quite vulnerable to oil exposure, and quite resilient, able to recover from exposure within a year if host plants remain healthy. BP's Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf Coast presented an opportunity to understand how stress from an oil spill might affect variables that we were measuring in the area. The study was conducted at sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. At each site, a 100m transect was sampled within 5m of the dead zone boundary. Sampling was conducted in August 2010 and August 2011. The number of sites and location of sites differed slightly among years.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography and seismic reflection imaging of a shallow ground-water aquifer (0-50 m): Mississippi River levee seepage across the Duncan Point bar, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S.A.

<p>The electrical resisitivity raw data files are slightly processed to remove bad data points but can be inverted using tomographic inversion code.&nbsp;</p> <p>The seismic data were assembled in Seismic Unix format, a shortened version of the SEG-Y format (Society of Exploration Geophysicists Exchange Format-Y https: //seg. org/Publications/SEG-Technical-Standards), that has the 3200-byte EBCDIC and 400-byte tape header removed. The data uploaded online (<a href="https://zenodo.org/records/14776025">https://zenodo.org/records/14776025</a>) is a CMP brute-stacked seismic section. &nbsp;</p> <p>During data collection, shotpoint location changed proceeding along a 136-degree azimuth (south-easterly direction), and spaced every 1 m.</p> <p>A total of 48, horizontal-component 28-Hz nominal geophones were placed every one meter and shotpoints were located half-way between geophones. Geophones remained fixed at their locations throughout the survey and so the CMP spacing is nominally 0.5-m but fold varies linearly from a value of 1 from either side of the survey to a central maximum of 24. &nbsp;The seismic source consisted of a partially buried 20-lb steel I-beam struck repeatedly on either side three times by an 8-lb sledge hammer.&nbsp; Data of the same striking polarity were added in-phase in the field.&nbsp; Data with opposing polarity at each shotpoint location were subtracted later to enhance SH-wave data and suppress converted SH-to-P waves.</p> <p>Seismic processing is minimal and consists of standard surface-wave muting, elimination of bad seismic traces, normal moveout, bandpass filtering (between 12 Hz and 50 Hz) and preliminary stacking with trace mixing every 3 CMPs. &nbsp;The data were stacked with a single velocity throughout that ranged from 80 m/s (Vs) at 0.2 s, to 100 m/s at 0.35 s and reached 180 m/s at 0.5 s of two-way traveltime.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Pathogenic Leptospira isolated from rodents in New Orleans, Louisiana USA, and associated site information

<p>Land use change can elevate disease risk by creating conditions beneficial to species that carry zoonotic pathogens. Observations of concordant global trends in pathogen prevalence and disease incidence have engendered concerns that urbanization could increase transmission risk of some pathogens. Yet host-pathogen relationships underlying transmission risk have not been well characterized within cities, even where contact between humans and species capable of transmitting pathogens of concern occur. We addressed this deficit by testing the hypothesis that areas in cities experiencing greater population loss and infrastructure decline (i.e., counter-urbanization) can support a greater diversity of host species and a larger and more diverse pool of pathogens. We did so by characterizing pathogenic <em>Leptospira</em> infection relative to rodent host richness and abundance across a mosaic of abandonment in post-Katrina New Orleans (Louisiana, USA). We found that <em>Leptospira</em> infection loads were highest in areas that harbored higher rodent species richness. Areas with greater host co-occurrence also harbored a greater number of hosts, including the most competent hosts, indicating that <em>Leptospira </em>infection is amplified by increases in overall and relative host abundance. Evidence of shared infection among rodent hosts indicates that cross-species transmission of <em>Leptospira </em>likely increases infection at sites with greater host syntopy. Additionally, evidence that rodent co-occurrence and abundance and <em>Leptospira</em> infection load parallel abandonment suggests that counter-urbanization can elevate zoonotic disease risk within cities, particularly in underserved communities that are burdened with disproportionate concentrations of derelict properties.</p>

Planform change and Fundulus SNP data for small watersheds in South Mississippi and Louisiana

<p>Fluvial geomorphic processes and the resulting patterns of landform morphogenesis affect the distribution and connectivity of habitat patches for aquatic organisms. Human alterations to fluvial geomorphic processes may affect local habitat quality and stability, and affect connectivity of habitat patches by altering the distribution, supply, and movement of landform-generating materials. This dataset examines 17 watersheds in south Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana and was used in preparation of a manuscript addressing the hypothesis that elevated planform movement, indicative of advanced fluvial erosion, would cause fragmentation among populations of a headwater specialist (Blackspotted Topminnow <em>Fundulus olivaceus</em>). The dataset includes numerous spatial features derived from the NHD+ dataset used in planform measurements, spatial features digitized from NAPP and NAIP aerial imagery measuring planform characteristics and dynamics, additional metrics of each watershed, and a population genetics dataset of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for multiple individuals at multiple sites per watershed. Associated code to recreate all analyses in the manuscript is provided.</p>
