Evaluation of aquaculture regulations' adaptiveness to low trophic aquaculture (LTA) in selected countries and regions of the Atlantic.

Assessments of documents relevant for LTA according to 15 adaptiveness criteria. Scores are assigned on the scale between -2 and 2. In total 22 documents are analyzed (5 for Galicia, Spain; 2 for Schleswig-Holstein, Germany; 8 for Scotland; 6 for Norway, 1 for South Africa and). General analysis is done for Brazilian aquaculture legislation. The data consists of an Excel file with scores and 6 pdf files with explanation of each score.

Consumer Survey Data, Low Trophic Aquaculture

The data is collected based on the designed questionnaire and by a survey company. These consumer preferences in relation to these attributes will be examined through surveys with representative samples from four different countries representing the four zones of the Atlantic Ocean: 1) Brazil, 2) South Africa, 3) Europe (Germany or France), and 4) USA/Canada. The data will be used to analyse consumer awareness and acceptance of low trophic species and sustainable production methods.

Quantification of the value of selected Nature's Contributions to People provided by Low Trophic Species aquaculture

This dataset was generated by the work on quantification of Nature’s Contributions to People (NCPs) provided by Low Trophic Species (LTS) aquaculture. The quantification and analysis of selected NCPs was performed based on selected indicators using data from the case studies within the AquaVitae project and literature reviews.

Mapping Nature's Contributions to People provided by Low Trophic Species aquaculture and knowledge gaps

This dataset was generated by the work on quantification of Nature’s Contributions to People (NCPs) provided by Low Trophic Species (LTS) aquaculture. As a first step of this work, the identification of the NCPs provided by LTS aquaculture (based on the case studies investigated within AquaVitae) and the identification of current knowledge gaps in terms of qualitative contributions of LTS aquaculture to the NCPs was performed based on expert judgements and literature review.

The ecosystem services framework from IPBES – Nature’s Contributions to People was adopted in this work.

Expert survey data- Low trophic aquaculture products

The expert data was collected through two different events. The first event was a tasting event organized in France in October 2022, where the participants consisted primarily of chefs and cooking students who possess practical knowledge of preparing food. During this event, the experts had the opportunity to taste the LTA products, providing valuable insights. The second event took place during the AquaVitae annual meeting in Brazil in April 2023. Although the experts in Brazil did not have the chance to taste the products, they exhibited extensive familiarity with these species due to their years of experience working with them.

Assessment domain of existing and emerging Low trophic species aquaculture activities around the Atlantic

The Assessment domain was constructed from a set of characteristics (main aspects/categories, e.g., organism group or production system), each consisting of several pre-determined elements (sub-categories, e.g., bivalves, brown macroalgae or surface systems, bottom culture systems) describing the activities, with each unique combination of characteristics (i.e., of one element per characteristic) resulting in the description of one type of LTS-system. The total of all possible LTS-systems constitutes the domain, providing the boundaries and resolution for the work to come.

In this data set, the results from the mapping of existing and emerging LTS aquaculture activities around the Atlantic is reported and summarised. The results are related to FAO production statistics and analysed in terms of recommendations for the WP6 activities. In more general terms, the report may also act as a baseline to explore regional differences in LTS aquaculture diversity as well as diversification of LTS activities over time in the region.
