Time series of in situ Uv-Vis absorbance spectra and high-frequency predictions of total and soluble Fe and Mn concentrations measured at multiple depths in Falling Creek Reservoir (Vinton, VA, USA) in 2020 and 2021

High-frequency measurements of light absorbance were collected at multiple depths in Falling Creek Reservoir (FCR; Vinton, VA, USA) using a s::can Spectrolyser UV-Visible spectrophotometer coupled with a multiplexor pumping system. The system pumps water samples from individual depths into a flow-through cuvette where the UV-vis absorbance spectra of the sample are measured by the spectrophotometer. The system used in our study collected measurements of light absorbance every 2.5 nm wavelengths from 200 nm to 732.5 nm (optical path length of 10 mm) approximately at an hourly time step for seven monitoring depths in the reservoir. Data was collected during two periods; the first deployment (16 October to 9 November 2020) was to observe changes in Fe and Mn concentrations before, during, and after reservoir fall turnover and the second deployment (26 May to 21 June 2021) was to observe the effects of engineered hypolimnetic oxygenation on Fe and Mn concentrations. Partial least squares regression models were developed to generate predictions of total and soluble Fe and Mn concentrations based on the correlation between absorbance spectra and sampling data.

Modeling the effects of lake morphology on chloride retention and salt-driven stratification in two urban lakes in St. Paul, MN

Road salt inputs have caused widespread salinization of urban lakes in northern temperate regions. Watershed characteristics are known to be important drivers of lake chloride concentrations, but there has been less focus on how lake morphometry influences seasonal and interannual dynamics in lake chloride, and how these chloride levels may alter mixing in the water column. We analyzed chloride retention for two urban lakes (Como Lake and Lake McCarrons) in Saint Paul, Minnesota, that are in adjacent watersheds and have similar surface areas, but differ in depth and water residence time. Summer chloride concentrations were negatively related to total summer precipitation for Como Lake (maximum depth 2.2 m), but the relationship was less strong for Lake McCarrons (maximum depth 7.6 m). We used a zero-dimensional model to simulate chloride dynamics in both lakes and tracked the fate of chloride over time. In Como Lake, the mass of chloride in the lake turns over within three years, whereas chloride inputs are retained for >10 years in Lake McCarrons. We then used a one-dimensional hydrodynamic lake model (GLM-AED) to examine how lake depth affects how current chloride loading rates alter lake mixing. Salt inputs significantly extended the duration of summer stratification for simulated lakes with depths of 8 m or more, and salt inputs increased the number of days of hypoxia and anoxia across all depths. These results underscore the importance of considering lake morphometry in understanding the effects of salt inputs on lake ecosystems.

Dataset of "Mn-doped WSe2 as an efficient electrocatalyst for hydrogen production and as anode material for lithium-ion batteries"

<p>The ongoing energy crisis has made it imperative to develop low-cost, easily fabricated, yet efficient materials. It is highly desirable for these nanomaterials to function effectively in multiple applications. Among transition metal dichalcogenides, tungsten diselenide (WSe2) shows great promise but remains understudied. In this work, we doped WSe2 with Mn using a simple hydrothermal method. The resulting material exhibited excellent electrocatalytic activity for the hydrogen evolution reaction, achieving a low overpotential of &ndash;0.28 V vs RHE at -10 mA/cm2, enhanced conductivity, and high stability and durability. Moreover, as an anode material in in lithium-ion batteries, the Mn-doped WSe2 outperformed pristine WSe2, reaching discharge and charge capacities of 1223 and 922 mAh g&minus;1, respectively. Additionally, the Mn-doped material maintained a significantly higher discharge capacity of 201 mAh g&minus;1 compared to intact WSe2, which had 68 mAh g&minus;1 after 150 cycles. This work offers novel insights into designing efficient bifunctional nanomaterials using transition metal dichalcogenides.</p>

Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN Canopy Temperature and Combined Urban Tree Index (CUTI), 2018-2021

This dataset includes a series of raster datasets of canopy temperature across Minneapolis-St. Paul, MN at a resolution of approximately 70 meters. There are data from five different warm, summer afternoons from 2018-2021. The canopy temperature data was derived from ECOSTRESS Land Surface Temperature and Emissivity data and high-resolution land cover data using a downscaling approach. Canopy temperature acts as a proxy of canopy health and function, with higher temperatures indicative of higher stress and lower function in the canopy. For each image, we also compute the combined urban tree index (CUTI), a metric we developed that provides an indication of relative benefits from urban canopy which arise from a combination of the amount and function/health of urban canopy (based on the canopy temperature). CUTI ranges from 0-1, with high values indicating areas likely experiencing greater canopy benefits due to greater canopy cover and better canopy health/function.

Dataset for the manuscript "Attribute Recognition: A New Method for Grouping Planetary Images by Visual Characteristics, Using the Example of Mn-Rich Rocks in the Floor of Gale Crater, Mars."

<p>This dataset supports the manuscript "Attribute Recognition: A New Method for Grouping Planetary Images by Visual Characteristics, Using the Example of Mn-Rich Rocks in the Floor of Gale Crater, Mars." The dataset is contained in a single CSV file with 201 data rows (one row per NASA Curiosity rover ChemCam instrument target used in the study). The columns in this dataset include the martian solar day (sol) on which each target was imaged by ChemCam; the standoff distance from ChemCam to each target (in meters); binary columns (values are either 1 or 0, indicating presence or absence, respectively) for each of the 17 visual attributes we documented for each target image; the corresponding greyscale ChemCam RMI mosaic file location (on the Planetary Data System); and columns indicating which group each target was sorted into under each classification algorithm discussed in the text (P_{SG}: simple graph method; P_{AP}: automatic partitioning method; P_{\lambda=1.6}: community detection method with \lambda=1.6). To obtain the binary strings used for the classification algorithms, the 17 visual attribute columns can be concatenated.&nbsp;</p> <p>Also included is a collection of HTML files that enables easy viewing of the RMI mosaics in each cluster, using the Planetary Data System links. To use it, download the <code>.zip</code> file, unzip it, and open the <code>index.html</code> file in the browser of your choice (likely will work to simply double-click <code>index.html</code>)</p>

Supporting data and software for: Low-temperature open-air synthesis of PVP-coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Mn upconversion nanoparticles with strong red emission

<p>Upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) have unique photonic properties that make them ideally suited for many applications. They are excited by low-energy near-infrared photons and emit at higher energy (typically visible) wavebands. However, synthesis of UCNPs requires either high pressure reaction chambers or inert atmospheres. Combined with the requirements for high-temperatures (200 to 400 °C) and long reaction times (e.g. up to 24 hours), these place barriers to entry for UCNP research, in terms of both financial barriers and knowledge/"know how". These constraints may also limit the scale of UCNP production for end-user applications.</p> <p>We adapted and further developed a method for producing UCNPs with simple laboratory equipment, i.e. a hot-plate and beakers. No pressure vessel or inert atmosphere is required. The UCNPs produced have a<span> polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) polymer coating, with strong red emission due to Mn2+ co-doping within the UCNP crystal lattice. It was found that UCNPs of composition NaYF4:Yb,Er,Mn  (Yb = 20 mol %, Er = 2 mol%, Mn = 35 mol%) maximised the red emission whilst also minimising the diameter of the UCNPs to </span> 36 ± 15 nm. These combination of optical and physical properties should make these UCNPs ideal for further development and exploitation, particularly for biological applications where red emission can penetrate over a centimetre of tissue.</p> <p>This dataset and software accompanies the manuscript <em>'Low-temperature open-air synthesis of PVP-coated NaYF4:Yb,Er,Mn upconversion nanoparticles with strong red emission</em>', which was published in Royal Society Open Science on 19th January 2022. https://doi.org/10.1098/rsos.211508</p>

Catalytic Dehydrogenation of Ethane over Mn Oxide Supported on Zeolite Chabazite

<p>A new class of Mn-containing zeolites prepared by incipient wetness impregnation (IWI) have been found to catalyze the ethane dehydrogenation reaction with high selectivity (98%+). Preparation by IWI leads to the formation of Mn2O3 nanoparticles on the external surface of the zeolite crystals and herein is shown that the primary active sites for the reaction are located on the surface of these particles. Propane dehydrogenation is also successfully catalyzed by this catalyst. Other Mn-zeolites (MFI and BEA) also have high reactivity and selectivity towards light alkane dehydrogenation.</p>
