Breznice magnetometer data

Data from the magnetometer survey on the archaeological site of Březnice (Czechia). The site represents one of the large settlements of the Late Bronze Age (Ha A2/B1, 14C: 1124–976 BC) in Bohemia. It became known mainly for a high number of so-called ‘trenches’, oblong pit features (breadth around 1 m, length 4–7 m), remarkable not only for their specific shape but also for their contents (unusual amounts of pottery, daub, loom weights and other finds, often with traces of a strong fire).

In 2018–20, a research project focusing on the study of the site was realized. Magnetometer survey became an integral part of the project. A 5-channel fluxgate gradiometer from Sensys (Germany) was used; the vertical gradient of the Z component of the Earth magnetic field was measured. In total, the survey covered an area of over 17 hectares and included over 1.8 million measurements.

Through this repository, the authors want to make the Březnice data free for further research that could supplement or modify the results obtained so far. Their own attempt at the data analysis and interpretation has been published in Kuna, M. et al., A quantitative approach to magnetometer survey data: the case of the Late Bronze Age site of Březnice. Journal of Archaeological Science 126 (2021) 105298 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1016/j.jas.2020.105298).

The source data is contained in file 01 in the form of a GIS vector point layer. File 02 displays the identified anomalies; their properties are in file 03. Files 04-09 contain additional data.

Alberta Differential Magnetometer Measurement (DMM) Data from 2021

This data product consists of a magnetometer dataset from the augmented differential magnetometer measurement (DMM) study conducted in Alberta, Canada in 2021 and GIC data from a nearby transformer substation. This data was analyzed and presented in the paper "Using a Differential Magneoter Measurement to Infer Geomagnetically Induced Currents: An Augmented Approach." Specifically, these datasets were used to create Figures 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9 and 10 in this paper.

The data files available here are from two magnetometers (USB4 and USB5) on a magnetically quiet day, September 26th, 2021, and a magnetically active day, October, 12th, 2021. USB4 data is from the underline sensor and USB5 is from the remote sensor. Each DMM data file includes the time in UT and magnetic field measurements in the x, y, and z components, where Bx is magnetic north and By is magnetic east. The GIC data file includes the local time (Mountain Daylight Time = GMT-6) and the transformer neutral-to-ground current at the Ellerslie substation (89S) in both transformers (T1 and T2) during the magnetic storm on October 12th, 2021. The magnetic data has a resolution of 1 Hz. The GIC data has a resolution of 0.5 Hz.

IMU, magnetometer, and motion capture data from a UAV used for indoor magnetic field mapping and localization

IMU, magnetometer, and motion capture data from a UAV used for indoor magnetic field mapping and localization.

This data is split up into two folders.

"stationary_magnetometer_data" 0.1Hz samples of a RM3100 magnetometer that was kept in one position from July 2022 through February 2023. The data is partitioned into separate files for analytical convenience of our research. Each file here is a CSV with a timestamp (synchronized with chrony to a central computer) and the three components of the measured magnetic field. We did not calibrate this stationary magnetometer.

"UAV_and_mocap_data" has many subfolders. Each subfolder is labeled by a date and a small description of the goals for that test segment. There is a single "EXPLANATION" file in each subfolder that gives more detail on the provided data. The data here includes the trajectory flown by the UAV, outdoor calibration data to adjust the raw magnetometer measurements, and IMU/motion capture data for each listed flight test. The EXPLANATION file should explain what trajectory was flown for each individual flight test.
