Mechanism for the Uplift of Gongga Shan in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau Constrained by 3D Magnetotelluric Data

The *.data, *.rho, and *.zip files are associated with a paper titled 'Mechanism for the Uplift of Gongga Shan in the Southeastern Tibetan Plateau Constrained by 3D Magnetotelluric Data' in Geophysical Research Letters published in 2022. On the basis of this data and inversion model, we addressed that the rapid uplift of the Gongga Shan massif likely occurred by the underthrusting of the Yangtze Craton. More details about the electrical resistivity model and its interpretations can be found in our journal paper.

All the resulting files from ModEM are included in the 'ModEM_Inversion_Results.zip'. All the figures in the paper and supplementary are included in the 'GRL_All_Figures.zip' and 'Figure_S5_All_Responses.zip'.

The resulting model and data output in ModEM format can be found in .rho and .data files. The ModEM is an open-source code package for MT 3D inversion, which is provided by Gary Egbert, Anna Kelbert, and Naser Meqbel and can be found on this website: https://sites.google.com/site/modularem/download.

Please note that the 3D resistivity model files in general format includes four columns -- longitude, latitude, depth, and resistivity, the one who wants to plot the model via GMT, MATLAB, Surface, etc., can find these files in 'Gongga_3D_Resistivity_Model_Files.zip'. In this zip, you will find the resistivity model of each horizontal slice of different depths and a file including all the slices. A MATLAB script called 'see_slice.m' is included in the folder which can help to quickly view these resistivity slices.

New advance in land controlled-source audio-frenquency magnetotellurics exploration: measurement at a shortened transmitter-receiver offset and three-dimensional inversion

Ambient noise significantly affects the quality of land controlled-source audio-frequency magnetotellurics (CSAMT) data. Shortening the transmitter–receiver offset can enhance the raw data signal-to-noise ratios (S/N). However, most of CSAMT explorations still collect field data using a large separation. To enhance the S/N of the raw electric and magnetic field and the corresponding Cagniard apparent resistivity, we propose shortening offset to 2–4 km during CSAMT fieldwork and inverting apparent resistivity rather than only electric field. We tested this approach with three experimental models with varying offsets, simulating 3D responses. Result showed that longer offsets predominantly produce data anomalies in the far-field zone, whereas shorter offsets shift these anomalies toward the transition zone with some in the far-field or near-field zones. Shortened-offset responses exhibit stronger electric and magnetic fields. Synthetic datasets with different noise levels were generated for inversion analysis. The results indicate that shortening the offset, particularly in noisy environments, improves data S/N. Inversion results reveal that a shortened CSAMT transmitter–receiver offset allows for data collection with most anomalies in the transition-field zone, facilitating accurate prediction of the true model in the 3D inversion. In low-noise environments, inversion results from data with a shortened offset are comparable to those with a long offset. However, in high-noise environments, the shortened-offset approach yields more accurate results due to improved data S/N. Field data inversion from Yanqing, China, further confirms the effectiveness of our scheme. The shortened-offset approach achieves higher S/N datasets and inversion results that align with actual geological structures.

The research area is located at an expanse of 120,000 square kilometers in northeastern China, including Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, and Liaoning Province (about 123°-127° east longitude and about 45°-49° north latitude). The basin is divided into five primary structural units according to the distribution and development characteristics of the fault depressions, namely; the central depression zone , the southeast uplift zone , the northeast uplift zone ,the northern plunge zone , and the west slope zone . Multiple secondary fault depressions and fault uplifts lie inside. This work used a total of 157 broadband magnetotelluric sounding data points. MTU-5 magnetotelluric instruments produced by Phoenix Geophysics of Canada were used for field collection of magnetotelluric sounds and the effective frequency band was 320~0.0005 Hz. The poles were arranged according to the tensor measurement method. Each measuring point measures 5 components, 3 of them being magnetic field components while the other 2 are mutually orthogonal horizontal electric field components. The signal acquisition time was about 20 hours and the average point distance was 10 km. This is a diagram of apparent resistivity phase curves including every broadband magnetotelluric sounding data points.

Models and data in support of "Probing the southern African lithosphere with magnetotellurics" parts I+II

These directories contain the original model and data files for the publications "Probing the southern African lithosphere with magnetotellurics, Part I, model construction" and "Probing the southern African lithosphere with magnetotellurics, Part II, linking electrical conductivity, composition and tectonomagmatic evolution". The two codes used to generate these results are

jif3D (Moorkamp et al. 2011) available via subversion at https://svn.code.sf.net/p/jif3d/jif3dsvn/trunk/jif3D and
ModEM (Kelbert et al. 2014) (https://sites.google.com/site/modularem/download)

All scripts to produce plots are written in Python (Version 3) and require a working Python environment (e.g. Anaconda under Windows https://www.anaconda.com/). Two helper classes are contained in the files mtclass.py (for reading data files) and mtmodel.py (for reading models). These require the packages
netcdf4, mtpy, rasterio, matplotlib, numpy, geopandas, cartopy and possibly a few others. If you get error messages related to missing packages, the typical solution is to call "conda install packagename" (Windows) or "pip3 install packagename".

We include 3 main Python scripts:

PlotHorizontalSlices.py plots horizontal slices through the inversion models similar to Figures 8-11 in part I. However, you get all slices from the surface to the bottom of the model domain. The output is a single PDF called HorSlices.pdf
PlotMisfit.py produces 5 different PDF files. Each one shows comparisons between observed and predicted data for all sites used in each inversion.
PlotGeoTiff.py produces horizontal slices through the models in GeoTiff format for use in GIS programs or Google Earth. The output files are large (total 1 GB per model), therefore it is currently set to only produce output for one model (jif3D with maximum data). This can be changed by using other filenames (see PlotHorizontalSlices.py).

These scripts are also meant as a basis for other scripts for new analyses of these results.
