Mangroves in the lagoon of the protected Aldabra Atoll: a dataset on species, structure, biomass and the environment
<p>Mangroves are vital for climate change mitigation since they store vast quantities of carbon as biomass and in the soil. Global mangrove biomass estimates are derived from climate-based relationships of mangroves with precipitation and temperature. However, the carbon stored locally is highly variable depending on environmental conditions. This uncertainty highlights the importance of local mangrove surveys and the need to explore factors that regulate forest structure and, therefore, carbon storage. In this study, we investigate the mangrove forest structure, seedling growth, species composition, aboveground biomass, soil organic carbon, and local environmental factors related to variation in mangrove carbon in the lagoonal mangroves on the protected Aldabra Atoll, Seychelles. We present a database from an extensive field survey of Aldabra's mangrove ecosystem using 54 plots of 5 m x 5 m along a mangrove coverage gradient. From November 2019 to November 2020, we measured the structural attributes and identified six mangrove species from >750 adult mangrove trees on Aldabra. We used the height and diameter of adult trees to derive aboveground biomass and carbon from a tropical allometric equation. We measured the height of 59 mangrove seedlings over three sampling periods. In addition, environmental factors were recorded for each plot. We measured soil salinity repeatedly along the soil column. From 90 soil samples, we measured the physical and chemical properties of the soil, including soil organic carbon and elemental concentrations for >20 elements. Autonomous measures of the water level, temperature and conductivity were made every 10 minutes over 1 year in a subset of 36 plots. The database provides 60% more information that is currently available for Seychelles regarding mangrove forest structure and biomass and is essential for research on several globally threatened and endemic species that depend on the mangroves on Aldabra. Furthermore, the database allows the incorporation of data and insights for the Western Indian Ocean and lagoonal mangroves, where few studies have been conducted on mangrove aboveground biomass and soil organic carbon. Data from: Habitat-dependent occupancy and movement in a migrant songbird highlights the importance of mangroves and forested lagoons in Panama and Colombia
Climate change is predicted to impact tropical mangrove forests due to decreased rainfall, sea-level rise, and increased seasonality of flooding. Such changes are likely to influence habitat quality for migratory songbirds occupying mangrove wetlands during the tropical dry season. Overwintering habitat quality is known to be associated with fitness in migratory songbirds, yet studies have focused primarily on territorial species. Little is known about the ecology of non-territorial species that may display more complex movement patterns within and among habitats of differing quality. In this study, we assess within season survival and movement at two spatio-temporal scales of a non-territorial overwintering bird, the prothonotary warbler (Protonotaria citrea), that depends on mangroves and tropical lowland forests. Specifically, we (1) estimated within-patch survival and persistence over a six-week period using radio-tagged birds in central Panama and (2) modelled abundance and occupancy dynamics at survey points throughout eastern Panama and northern Colombia as the dry season progressed. We found that site persistence was highest in mangroves; however, the probability of survival did not differ among habitats. The probability of warbler occupancy increased with canopy cover, and wet habitats were least likely to experience local extinction as the dry season progressed. We also found that warbler abundance is highest in forests with the tallest canopies. This study is one of the first to demonstrate habitat-dependent occupancy and movement in a non-territorial overwintering migrant songbird, and our findings highlight the need to conserve intact, mature mangrove and lowland forests.

Field measurement data for the mangroves bordering the lagoons of La Mancha and El Llano, Mexico

In the </span><span>l</span><span>agoon of </span><span>El</span><span> </span><span>L</span><span>lan</span><span>o,</span><span> </span><span>three</span><span> plots of 10 × </span><span>1</span><span>0 m</span><span> </span><span>were delimited in the west of the lagoon and </span><span>three plots of the same size</span><span> on the east, neighbouring a system </span><span>o</span><span>f stabilized dunes. </span><span>In La Mancha</span><span> lagoon</span><span>, </span><span>two</span><span> plots of </span><span>1</span><span>0 × </span><span>1</span><span>0 m</span><span> and two 15</span><span> × </span><span>15</span><span> m</span><span> subplots of 30</span><span> × </span><span>30</span><span> m</span><span> permanent plots located in the north, and one plot of 2</span><span>0 × </span><span>2</span><span>0 m</span><span> </span><span>for large <em>R. mangle</em> trees</span><span> were sampled in the southeast of the lagoon. </span><span>Species id, stem diameter (cm) at 1.3 m from ground surface, and tree height (m) were recorded within each plot</span><span>. Additionally,</span><span> trunk diameter at lowest living branch, canopy width and length in the case of shrubs or young trees, and diameter above the highest prop root in the case of <em>R. mangle </em>were also recorded.</span></p>
Dataset: Ordered Mortality of Mangroves under Extreme Flooding in a Tropical Microtidal Estuarine Lagoon in China
<p>The field investigation was conducted in January 2012, three months after the flooding event. We established two transects near the Longxi Bridge (site A and B; Fig. 1c), where the dominant species in the study area, C. tagal, was prevalent. Each transect was divided into zones with a width of 5 meters, and in each zone, we set up three 5 × 5 square meters plots for mangrove plant surveys (Fig. 1g). Site A and Site B underwent the same surveys, differing only in the length of the transects. The relative elevation of each sample plot was measured relative to the seaward edge of the fringe forest (i.e., the elevation of the seaward edge was set to 0; Fig. 1g). Elevation data in each plot were measured using the five-point method, and the average elevation of the three plots within each zone (15 measurements in total) was calculated as the average elevation for the entire zone. In each plot, we recorded the species and health status of every tree. The health status assessment, conducted by the same author, categorized trees into four levels based on their condition: healthy, acceptable, compromised, and dead. These categories were assigned values (healthy = 3, acceptable = 2, compromised = 1, dead = 0). Trees with more than 50% fresh leaf cover were considered healthy, while those with 20-50% fresh leaf cover were deemed acceptable. Compromised trees had a fresh leaf cover between 0% and 20%, while trees without any fresh leaves were considered dead. Additionally, in the middle zone of site A, we recorded the height of each tree within three plots. Since C. tagal often grows densely, we could only measure the height of a few individuals at the edges using a height rod. Therefore, researchers were trained to estimate tree height. All height estimates were made simultaneously by the same volunteer. Additionally, we selected three healthy living individuals of C. tagal from each zone and randomly chose five branchlets from each plant to count the number of leaves and propagules. Since there were fewer than three surviving C. tagal in the lowest elevation areas, all available trees were sampled. Additionally, in areas where Avicennia marina, Rhizophora apiculata, and Scyphiphora hydrophyllacea were clustered, we recorded the height and health status of many individuals, using the same methods as for C. tagal. The number of surveyed individuals for these three species was 97, 1572, and 778, respectively.</p> <p></p>
