Fall 2021 crab population monitoring: mid-marsh and creek bank abundance based on crab hole counts at GCE marsh, monitoring sites 1-10

This data set is the Fall 2021 estimate of crab densities at the GCE-LTER marsh sites used for population monitoring. Crab abundance was determined by counting the number of crab holes within a 625 cm^2 quadrat and converting the counts to number per square meter. Counts were made in the mid-marsh and creek bank zones (n = 4 per zone) at GCE sites 1 through 10. Note that this census method does not differentiate which species made a particular hole and therefore only estimates total burrowing crab abundance, potentially including species Uca pugnax, Uca minax, Uca pugilator, Armases cinereum, Eurytium limosum and Sesarma reticulatum. Crab holes that are not actively maintained are quickly covered by tidal activity and other sediment disturbances, therefore plugged holes were assumed to be unoccupied and excluded from the counts.

Borrichia removal experiment at Dean Creek marsh on Sapelo Island, Georgia between 1995 and 2001

To examine the effect of Borrichia on Batis and Sarcocornia sp., I completely clipped all vegetation from six 0.5 x 0.5 m quadrats in a mixed stand of the three species at the Dean Creek marsh in June 1995. Six additional plots were left unmanipulated as controls. Removal and control plots were fully interspersed. I clipped Borrichia from the removal plots every 6 months but allowed other plant species to re-colonize.

Surface Elevation Data for the Upper Phillips Creek Marsh at the Virginia Coast Reserve 1998-2025

This dataset contains data from Surface Elevation Tables (SETs), Root SETs (RSET), and Marker Horizons (MH) located at the Virginia Coast Reserve. NOTE: These research plots are highly sensitive to disturbance and should not be approached by anyone not engaged in taking measurements. Mark Brinson, Robert Christian and Linda Blum conceived the experimental design, installed (1997), and measured (1997-2011) the SET and MH. After Mark Brinson died in 2011, Robert Christian and Linda Blum continued SET and MH measurements through 2017. VCR Staff and Keryn Gedan assumed responsibility for SET and MH measurements subsequent to 2017. Linda Blum and Pat Willis installed the RSET (2003). Pat was responsible for measuring the RSET between (2003-2005). Between 2005-2017, Linda Blum was responsible for measuring the RSET in addition to the SET and MH. Subsequent to 2017, Cora Johnson Baird and Keryn Gedan assumed responsibility for RSET measurements.

Marsh plant species shoot height, weight and diameters for Rowley River tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley and Ipswich, MA.

Marsh plant species shoot height, weight and diameters for Rowley River tidal creeks associated with long term fertilization experiments, Rowley and Ipswich, MA. The TIDE project aims to simulate eutrophication on a large scale by the addition of NO3- aiming to reach 70μM concentrations from May to September every year during the growing season. This fertilization of the marsh has been going on at Sweeney Creek since the 2004 growing season through 2012 and at Clubhead Creek in 2005 and from 2009 till 2019.

Eddy flux measurements during 2015 from low marsh site (Spartina alterniflora) within Shad Creek catchment, Rowley, Massachusetts.

We deployed an eddy covariance system to measure ecosystem-atmosphere exchange of CO2 above a low marsh system (Spartina alterniflora) located within the Shad creek catchment off Plum Island Sound, Rowley MA. The data represents CO2 exchange for all July to October 2015. This site was established in 2015.
