News data for studying media exposure to the Boston Marathon bombings

<p>The news data sets released here have been used to study the relationship between media exposure and individuals&#39; threat perception. Media exposure to mass violence has been shown to have a detrimental impact on people&#39;s threat perception and mental wellness, but little has been done to explore how exposure to different news content may impact mental health in people&#39;s everyday lives. In our study, we empirically test how emotionally potent media coverage of a real-world threat, namely, the Boston Marathon bombings occurred in 2013, alters threat perception of the community members over the first and the third anniversaries (in 2014 and 2016).</p> <p>The data were collected using a wave-based longitudinal design. There are two data sets, and each covers three waves:</p> <ul> <li>Dataset (I) -- news coverage before (Wave 1), during (Wave 2), and after (Wave 3) 2014 anniversary</li> <li>Dataset (II) -- news coverage before (Wave 1), during (Wave 2), and after (Wave 3) 2016 anniversary</li> </ul> <p>The collection procedure was informed by our survey study. Based on the survey completed by our subjects, we identified the four most frequent news outlets in the response: Metro (MT), New York Times (NY), Boston Globe (BG), and Boston Herald (BH). Other outlets, such as USA Today and Wall Street Journal, were reported by less than ten respondents. Therefore, our data collection focused on the news published by the four most frequent outlets.</p> <p>The data sets include the metadata of the news coverage over the aforementioned six waves. The raw content of the news stories was removed to respect the copyright owners.</p> <p><strong>Summary of the data collection procedure </strong></p> <p>We used news aggregators including Google and Yahoo news, to retrieve news articles published by the four outlets on a daily basis. We first collected the URLs of the news articles from the news aggregators and retrieved and parsed the news content using an HTML parser. In total, we collected over 38.5K and 54.1K news articles in dataset I and II, respectively.</p> <p>There are six files; each correspond to news coverage from the outlets in each wave. In these files, each line contains four columns: outlet, time, title, url which indicate the outlet of each news article, the time of publishing, the title of the article, and the URL to the article.</p> <p>We are making the data sets available for academic researchers and public use, to enable the discovery of new insights and development of better techniques to improve crisis communication and mental wellness.</p>

Dataset of the study "Think globally, act locally": A glocal approach to old and new literacies for social media skills

<p>This Zenodo item contains the dataset of the study: Manca, S., Bocconi, S., &amp; Gleason, B. (2020).&nbsp;&ldquo;Think globally, act locally&rdquo;. A glocal approach to old and new literacies for social media skills. Computers &amp; Education.</p> <p>Abstract</p> <p>Despite the documented number of studies that investigate social media in teaching and learning settings, the topic of social media literacy is still an under-researched area. This study adopts the theoretical lens of New Literacy studies to suggest a combined perspective for investigating social media literacies. This perspective considers both social media skills that are transversal across different social media (global skills) or that pertain to a specific social media platform (local skills). It examines practices that are decontextualized (literacy as something to be acquired) or situated and context-dependent (literacy through participation). To map current research on social media skills, a systematic literature review was conducted. Analysis of 54 publications was carried out following the UNESCO DLGF framework for digital literacy competencies, and also using a critical lens based on four metaphors whereby, for learning purposes, social media are seen as a <em>tool</em>, as a <em>process</em>, as <em>collaboration</em>, and as <em>participation</em>. The results show that most of the studies consider global social media skills, while only a few examine skills sets specific to a particular social media platform. Besides, most of the identified skills concern decontextualized practices, with very few studies emphasizing the importance of fostering situated social media practices. We conclude that there is a need for more expansive theoretical elaboration in the field, and provide a number of recommendations for investigating, understanding, and designing educational curricula and activities that support the development of social media literacy.</p>

Data from Nicolle et al. LC-HRMS study of Streptomyces sp. AgN23 Culture Media Extract. Study of AgN23 exometabolome and analysis of Arabidopsis metabolomic responses to the bacteria

<p>This archive compiles several datasets related to&nbsp;studies of <i>Streptomyces</i> sp. AgN23 interaction with <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i>.&nbsp;Ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-high-resolution MS (UHPLC-HRMS) analyses were performed on a Q Exactive Plus quadrupole (Orbitrap) mass spectrometer, equipped with a heated electrospray probe (HESI II) coupled to a U-HPLC Ultimate 3000 RSLC system (Thermo Fisher Scientific, Hemel Hempstead, United Kigdom). For each&nbsp;biological sample, the RAW file obtained in ESI+ and ESI-&nbsp;mode were retrieved from the&nbsp;Xcalibur version 4.4 software and are deposited in separate sub-folders termed "RawPos" and "RawNeg". Each experimental cohort is grouped in a folder where the biological repeats can be retrieved, as well as QC (Quality Check, pool of all samples from the cohort), Blank samples and eventual alternative control such as Bennett, the mock control media of <i>Streptomyces</i> sp.&nbsp; AgN23. The details regarding samples preparation, analytic parameters and mass spectrometry, statistical treatment and visualization of the data will be made available in the publication relating to this archive. The folder " AgN23-WT_AgN23-pSC004" contains&nbsp;chromatograms related to metabolomic study of Wild-type and pSC004-1, pSC004-10, pSC004-16 and pSC004-22 mutants of <i>Streptomyces</i> sp. AgN23. The folder " Col-0_AgN23" contains chromatograms related to metabolomic study of <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i> Col-0 responses to colonization by <i>Streptomyces</i> sp. AgN23-WT. The folder " Col-0_pad3-1_AgN23" contains chromatograms related to metabolomic study of <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i> Col-0&nbsp;and the <i>Arabidopsis</i> pad3-1 mutant responses to colonization by <i>Streptomyces</i> sp. AgN23-WT. The folder " Col-0_pSC004" contains chromatograms related to metabolomic study of <i>Arabidopsis thaliana</i> Col-0&nbsp;responses to colonization by <i>Streptomyces</i> sp. Results: (74.7%) of nursing students were interested in Digital communication, and more than half (55.3 %) knew about Digital communication and social media, there's a statistical association between the academic level and students' interest. Building better conservation media for primates and people: A case study of orangutan rescue and rehabilitation YouTube videos

<p>1. Conservation organizations rely on social/internet media platforms to raise awareness and fundraise. Social media is a double-edged sword: it can be a wide-reaching and effective tool for education and fundraising, but can also have counter-productive impacts on public views toward wildlife and understanding of wildlife conservation.</p> <p>2. For example, depicting humans interacting with wildlife in media may increase video popularity, but animals shown in anthropogenic contexts are also viewed as appealing pets. We are interested in understanding whether this is true for social media posts (YouTube videos) by orangutan rescue and rehabilitation organizations, which rely on social media for fundraising and awareness-raising. Our goal is to provide data and recommendations to guide these organizations in building media with positive conservation impact while minimizing potential negative effects.</p> <p>3. Using YouTube analytics and sentiment analysis of comments on 118 videos, we ask how viewer responses to videos vary with 1) the amount of human-orangutan interaction depicted, 2) the ages of the orangutans featured, and 3) the mention of threats to orangutans.</p> <p>4. Videos with longer human-orangutan interaction time were viewed more, but comments on them were significantly more likely to be negative toward Indonesian/Malaysian people. Comments on orangutan rescue/rehabilitation videos were more likely to be categorized as negative for orangutan conservation compared to videos about orangutans generally, and within these, so were comments on videos featuring infant and juvenile orangutans.</p> <p>5. Based on our findings, we recommend that orangutan rescue and rehabilitation organizations feature adult and mixed age groups of orangutans rather than infants and juveniles, minimize the amount of human-orangutan interaction shown, and talk about conservation threats to orangutans in their videos. We also recommend that, as a precaution, other primate rescue and rehabilitation groups also abide by these suggestions.</p>

The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Kellogg Biological Station (KBS) contains aboveground net primary productivity of Stellaria media measurements in gramsPerMeterSquaredPerYear units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.
