Gaia DR3 asteroid reflectance spectra: L-type families, memberships and ages
<p>The Gaia Data Release 3 (DR3) contains reflectance spectra at visible wavelengths for 60,518 asteroids over the range between 374-1034 nm, representing a large sample that is well suited to studies of asteroid families.</p> <p>We wanted to assess the potential of Gaia spectra in identifying asteroid family members. Here, we focus on two L-type families, namely Tirela/Klumpkea and Watsonia. These families are known for their connection to Barbarian asteroids, which are potentially abundant in calcium-aluminum rich inclusions (CAIs).</p> <p>The method we developed to establish family memberships is based (1) on a color taxonomy specifically built on Gaia data and (2) on the similarity of spectra of candidate members with the template spectrum of a specific family.</p> <p>Our work demonstrates the advantage of combining the classical hierarchical clustering method (HCM) approach to spectral properties obtained by Gaia for the study of asteroid families. Future data releases are expected to further expand the capabilities in this domain.</p> <p>The memberships for the Tirela/Klumpkea and Watsonia families are reported here. The columns report, from left to right: the identifier of the asteroid, the absolute magnitude, the proper elements (semi-major axis, eccentricity and sine of the inclination, taken from AFP, Novaković et al., 2022), NEOWISE albedo (Masiero et al., 2011) and spectral type from our color taxonomy. For the objects that are not directly classified into the S and L classes, their most probable spectral type is also reported. </p>
Symbiotic microbiota vary with breeding group membership in a highly social joint-nesting bird
<p>Symbiotic microbes affect the health, fitness, and behavior of their animal hosts, and can even affect the behavior of non-hosts. Living in groups presents numerous benefits and challenges to social animals, including exposure to symbiotic microbes, which can mediate both cooperation and competition. In social mammals, individuals from the same social group tend to share more similar microbes, and this social microbiome, the microbial community of all hosts in the same social group, can shape the benefits and costs of group living. In contrast, little is known about the social microbiome of group-living birds. We tested the predictions that communally breeding smooth-billed anis (<em>Crotophaga</em> <em>ani</em>) belonging to the same breeding group share more similar microbes and that microbial community composition differs between body regions. To test this, we used 16S rRNA gene sequencing to characterize the preen gland and body feather microbiota of adult birds from 16 breeding groups at a long-term study site in southwestern Puerto Rico. As predicted, individuals from the same breeding group shared more similar microbiota than non-group members and preen gland and body feathers harboured distinct microbial communities. Future research will evaluate whether this social microbiome affects the behavior of group living birds.</p>

'Opening the Future' - a new funding model for open-access monographs: introducing an innovative approach to publishing OA books through library membership funding
<p>We showcase a collaborative pilot case study that implements an innovative open access revenue model at the Central European University Press and Liverpool University Press, with assistance from the COPIM Project (Community-led Open Publication Infrastructures for Monographs). Building on existing library subscription models (e.g. OBP, punctum), this is a sustainable OA publishing model that gives library members access to a highly-regarded backlist, with the membership fees then used to make the frontlist openly accessible.<br> Given the current global library environment and existing budget pressures that have been exacerbated by Covid-19, a consortial model of funding promises a cost-effective solution for OA that means no single institution bears a disproportionate burden. This model, then, appeals to both those who wish to pay for subscription-access content (more traditional university acquisition models) and those who support OA initiatives. It brings many institutions together under one roof for an affordable route to open access books.<br> Library members get access to a selection of the publishers’ backlists, DRM free and with perpetual access after three years. In return, the membership revenue is used to make newly-published books openly accessible to anyone with an internet connection.<br> We believe Opening the Future is a trailblazer in scholarly comms, offering a viable and affordable route to OA change for small/medium university presses and which appeals to libraries of all sizes and budgets. We aim to open up research for the public good. The model that we are piloting reduces inequalities in access to open access publication by eradicating exclusionary book processing charges (BPCs).<br> As we progress with the pilot, we are writing up everything we’ve done to implement the model and will release this and any software as a free toolkit, so that other publishers can use it and also take the leap.</p>

<p>Gregarious species must distinguish group members from non-group members. Olfaction is important for group recognition in mammals but rarely studied in birds, despite birds using olfaction in social contexts from species discrimination to kin recognition. Olfactory-based recognition requires that groups have a signature odour, so we tested for preen oil and feather chemical similarity among group-living smooth-billed anis (<em>Crotophaga</em> <em>ani</em>). Physiology affects body chemistry, so we also tested for an effect of egg-laying competition, as a proxy for reproductive status, on female chemical similarity. Finally, the fermentation hypothesis for chemical recognition posits that host-associated microbes drive host odour, so we tested for covariation between ani chemicals and microbiota. Group members were more chemically similar than non-group members, regardless of body region, demonstrating that gregarious bird species can have group chemical signatures. Females in groups with less egg-laying competition had more similar preen oil, but not feather, chemicals, suggesting preen oil conveys information about reproductive status. There was no overall covariation between chemicals and microbes; instead, subsets of microbes could mediate olfactory cues in birds. Preen oil and feather chemicals showed little overlap, suggesting they convey different information. These findings will guide experimental work on olfaction in gregarious birds.</p>

Data from: Within guild co-infections influence parasite community membership: a longitudinal study in African Buffalo
1. Experimental studies in laboratory settings have demonstrated a critical role of parasite interactions in shaping parasite communities. The sum of these interactions can produce diverse effects on individual hosts as well as influence disease emergence and persistence at the population level. 2. A predictive framework for the effects of parasite interactions in the wild remains elusive, largely because of limited longitudinal or experimental data on parasite communities of free-ranging hosts. 3. This four year study followed a community of haemoparasites in free-ranging African buffalo (Syncerus caffer). We detected infection by 11 haemoparasite species using PCR-based diagnostic techniques, and analyzed drivers of infection patterns using generalized linear mixed models to understand the role of host characteristics and season on infection likelihood. We tested for (1) effects of co-infection by other haemoparasites (within guild) and (2) effects of parasites infecting different tissue types (across guild). 4. We found that within guild co-infections were the strongest predictors of haemoparasite infections in the buffalo; but that seasonal and host characteristics also had important effects. In contrast, the evidence for across-guild effects of parasites utilizing different tissue on haemoparasite infection was weak. 5. These results provide a nuanced view of the role of co-infections in determining haemoparasite infection patterns in free living mammalian hosts. Our findings suggest a role for interactions among parasites infecting a single tissue type in determining infection patterns.

Microsatellite genotypes, cluster membership and metadata of Central European wolves (Canis lupus)
<p class="Normalny1">Local extinction and recolonization events can shape genetic structure of subdivided animal populations. The gray wolf (<i>Canis lupus</i>) was extirpated from most of Europe, but recently recolonized big part of its historical range. An exceptionally dynamic expansion of wolf population is observed in the western part of the Great European Plain. Nonetheless, genetic consequences of this process have not yet been fully understood. We aimed to assess genetic diversity of this recently established wolf population in Western Poland (WPL), determine its origin and provide novel data regarding the population genetic structure of the grey wolf in Central Europe. We utilized both spatially explicit and non-explicit Bayesian clustering approaches, as well as a model-independent, multivariate method DAPC, to infer genetic structure in large dataset of wolf microsatellite genotypes. To put the patterns observed in studied population into a broader biogeographic context we also analyzed a mtDNA control region fragment widely used in previous studies.</p> <p>In comparison to a source population, we found slightly reduced allelic richness and heterozygosity in the newly recolonized areas west of the Vistula river. We discovered relatively strong west-east structuring in lowland wolves, probably reflecting founder-flush and allele surfing during range expansion, resulting in clear distinction of WPL, eastern lowland and Carpathian genetic groups. Interestingly, wolves from recently recolonized mountainous areas (Sudetes Mts, SW Poland) clustered together with lowland, but not Carpathian wolf populations. We also identified an area in Central Poland that seems to be a melting pot of western, lowland eastern and Carpathian wolves. We conclude that the process of dynamic recolonization of Central European lowlands lead to the formation of a new, genetically distinct wolf population. Together with the settlement and establishment of packs in mountains by lowland wolves and vice versa, it suggests that demographic dynamics and possibly anthropogenic barriers rather than ecological factors (e.g. natal habitat-biased dispersal patterns) shape the current wolf gene<span>tic structure in Central Europe.</span></p>
