Evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem documented via tourist submarine off Cape Well-Met, Vega Island, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1) - Multimedia

Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. The dive was conducted on the 29th November 2019 within Subarea 48.1. The video of this resource supplements the dataset "Evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem documented via tourist submarine off Cape Well-Met, Vega Island, Eastern Antarctic Peninsula (Subarea 48.1) - data'' available at https://ipt.biodiversity.aq/resource?r=cape-well-met_2019.

Method step description:

Video evidence of a Vulnerable Marine Ecosystem (VME) was collected via submarine deployed by the tourist super-yacht MY Scenic Eclipse flagged with Malta. Recordings begin at the greatest depth and continue as the submarine travels up the wall. Footage was taken with a GoPro Hero 7 Black mounted in the pilot window of a U-Boat Worx Cruise Sub 7-300 (https://www.uboatworx.com/model/cruisesub). Four submarine dives were filmed.

Prior to footage clean-up it was decided that the longest resulting video would be the one that would be analysed. Footage of each of these dives were provided in multiple files.

Final Cut Pro X was first used to join the files into one video file per dive.

The videos were then cropped to remove the edge of the pilot’s window frame and to adjust the colour balance.

Clean-up then followed the same methodology as was used for analyzing the submarine footage for the successful nomination of four VMEs in WG-EMM-18/35 to remove unusable sequences. For the Cape Well-Met footage that meant the removal of any sequences where the submarine was too far from the wall, where the visibility was poor and when the submarine was paused.

Footage from Dive C was the longest resulting video after the completion of this clean-up procedure, thus it became the footage that was analysed.

This project is funded by The Soap and The Sea, a Swiss organic and ocean-friendly soap enterprise that donates half of its profits to Ocean Conservation initiatives.

The MET-Pottery–Variables_System

The variable system was created to compile the 'MET-Pottery–Dataset' within the SNSF project No 100011_156205 ‘Mobilities, Entanglements and Transformations in Neolithic Societies of the Swiss Plateau (3900-3500 BC)’, short ‘MET-project’, conducted at the Institute of Archaeological Sciences, University of Bern between 2014 and 2018 (https://data.snf.ch/grants/grant/156205; https://boris.unibe.ch/77649/).

It represents the largest and temporally most highly resolved collection of morphological pottery data of the Central European Neolithic. It offers data of 1046 ceramic vessels of different styles that originate out of 44 archaeological features of wetland and dryland sites of the northern Alpine Space and adjacent regions. Most of the archaeological contexts – anthropogenic layers of settlements, pits, and ditches – are typology-independent dated using dendrochronology or C14-dates. The data set includes a spreadsheet of nominal and numeric morphological variables, the collection of the vessels’ semi-profile silhouettes and the typological drawings from which all data was collected. In the scope of the MET-project ‘the data was used to elaborate a new mixed method research (MMR) methodology to investigate social relations beyond problematic concepts of homogeneous ‘archaeological cultures’. It is highly relevant for further methodological morphology-based research on pottery.

Warm Trap: A simulation of TRAPPIST-1e with a moist N2 atmosphere as if moved to the inner edge of its habitable zone

5. Dry Trap: A simulation of TRAPPIST-1e with a dry atmosphere

The data is used in Cohen et al. (2023). ""Traveling planetary-scale waves cause cloud variability on tidally locked aquaplanets." Submitted to The Planetary Science Journal.

Abstract:

"Cloud cover at the planetary limb of water-rich Earth-like planets is likely to weaken chemical
signatures in transmission spectra, impeding attempts to characterize these atmospheres. However,
based on observations of Earth and solar system worlds, exoplanets with atmospheres should have both
short-term weather and long-term climate variability, implying that cloud cover may be less during
some observing periods. We identify and describe a mechanism driving periodic clear sky events at
the terminators in simulations of tidally locked Earth-like planets. A feedback between dayside cloud
radiative effects, incoming stellar radiation and heating, and the dynamical state of the atmosphere,
especially the zonal wavenumber-1 Rossby wave identified in past work on tidally locked planets, leads
to oscillations in Rossby wave phase speeds and in the position of Rossby gyres and results in advection
of clouds to or away from the planet’s eastern terminator. We study this oscillation in simulations of
Proxima Centauri b, TRAPPIST 1-e, and rapidly rotating versions of these worlds located at the inner
edge of their stars’ habitable zones. We simulate time series of the transit depths of the 1.4 μm water
feature and 2.7 μm carbon dioxide feature. The impact of atmospheric variability on the transmission
spectra is sensitive to the structure of the dayside cloud cover and the location of the Rossby gyres,
but none of our simulations have variability significant enough to be detectable with current methods."

SECURES-Met - A European wide meteorological data set suitable for electricity modelling (supply and demand) for historical climate and climate change projections

For the modelling of electricity production and demand, meteorological conditions are becoming more relevant due to the increasing contribution from renewable electricity production. But the requirements on meteorological data sets for electricity modelling are quite high. One challenge is the high temporal resolution, since a typical time step for modelling electricity production and demand is one hour. On the other side the European electricity market is highly connected, so that a pure country based modelling does not make sense and at least the whole European Union area has to be considered. Additionally, the spatial resolution of the data set must be able to represent the thermal conditions, which requires high spatial resolution at least in mountainous regions. All these requirements lead to huge data amounts for historic observations and even more for climate change projections for the whole 21st century. Thus, we have developed an aggregated European wide data set that has a temporal resolution of one hour, covers the whole EU area, has a reasonable size but is considering the high spatial variability. This meteorological data set for Europe for the historical period and climate change projections fulfills all relevant criteria for energy modelling. It has a hourly temporal resolution, considers local effects up to a spatial resolution of 1 km and has a suitable size, as all variables are aggregated to NUTS regions. Additionally meteorological information from wind speed and river run-off is directly converted into power productions, using state of the art methods and the current information on the location of power plants. Within the research project SECURES (https://www.secures.at/) this data set has been widely used for energy modelling.

The SECURES-Met dataset provides variables visible in the table.

Variable

Short name

Unit

Aggregation methods

Temporal resolution

Temperature (2m)

T2M

°C

°C

spatial mean

population weighted mean (recommended)

hourly

Radiation

GLO (mean global radiation)

BNI (direct normal irradiation)

Wm-2

Wm-2

spatial mean

population weighted mean (recommended)

hourly

Potential Wind Power

WP

1

normalized with potentially available area

hourly

Hydro Power Potential

HYD-RES (reservoir)

HYD-ROR (run-of-river)

MW

1

summed power production

summed power production normalized with average daily production

daily

SECURES-Met is available in a tabular csv format for the historical period (1981-2020, Hydro only until 2010) created from ERA5 and ERA5-Land and two future emission scenarios (RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5, both 1951-2100, wind power starting from 1981, hydro power from 1971) created from one CMIP5 EUROCORDEX model (GCM: ICHEC-EC-EARTH, RCM: KNMI-RACMO22E, ensemble run: r12i1p1) on the spatial aggregation level

NUTS0 (country-wide),

NUTS2 (province-wide),

NUTS3 (Austria only),

and EEZ (Exclusive Economic Zones, offshore only).

The data is divided into the historical (Historical.zip) and the two emission scenarios (Future_RCP45.zip and Future_RCP85.zip), a README file, which describes, how the files are organized, and a folder (Meta.zip), which has information and shape files of the different NUTS levels. As population weighted temperature and radiation represent values in geographical areas more relevant for solar power, it is highly relevant to use population weighted files. Spatial mean should be used for reference only.

The project SECURES, in which this dataset was produced, was funded by the Climate and Energy Fund (Klima- und Energiefonds) under project number KR19AC0K17532.
