Effects of factorial nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium with micronutrient addition and Host Community on Fungal Endophyte Diversity at Cedar Creek Ecosystem Reserve, Minnesota, USA, 2014

The microbes contained within free-living organisms can alter host growth, reproduction, and interactions with the environment. In turn, processes occurring at larger scales determine the local biotic and abiotic environment of each host that may affect the diversity and composition of the microbiome community. Here, we examine variation in the diversity and composition of the foliar fungal microbiome in the grass host, Andropogon gerardii, across a factorial nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium addition experiment in Minnesota, USA. We found limited evidence of direct effects of nutrients on endophyte diversity. Instead, the effects of nutrients on endophyte diversity appeared to be mediated by accumulation of plant litter and plant diversity loss. Specifically, nitrogen addition is associated with a 40% decrease in plant diversity and an 11% decrease in endophyte richness. Although nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium addition increased aboveground live biomass and decreased relative Andropogon cover, endophyte diversity did not covary with live plant biomass or Andropogon cover. Our results suggest that fungal endophyte diversity within this focal host is determined in part by the diversity of the surrounding plant community and its potential impact on immigrant propagules and dispersal dynamics. Our results suggest that elemental nutrients reduce endophyte diversity indirectly via impacts on the local plant community, not direct response to nutrient addition.

Dissolved trace element concentration profiles of micronutrients (Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Co) and contaminants (Cd, Pb) in seawater from discrete bottle samples from CCE Process Cruises in the California Current System, 2021 - 2025 (ongoing).

Dissolved trace element is sampled from the trace metal clean rosette. The sample is collected by filtering seawater through a 0.2µm PES filter. The seawater sample is then acidified to pH~1.8 using ultra clean hydrochloric acid and subsequently analyzed using sector-field inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, scanning in low and medium resolution, with either standard curve or isotope dilution methods. The samples are used to develop a description of the distribution of dissolved trace elements in the CCE region.

<p>The Matlab code and dataset for the manuscript "Physiological mechanisms and life history trade-offs shape in-tissue correlations of an essential micronutrient". The dataset is packed in the ZIP archive 'Dataset_EjsmondTodisco_etal.zip' with variable description in the Matlab code file EjsmondTodisco_etal.m. To run the program, place the files EjsmondTodisco_etal.m and Fun_PlotResults.m in a catalog. The results are stored in two catalogs: 'ThReabsorptionAndSecretion' - modeling the rate of thiamine loss with processes of active reabsorption and secretion; and 'ThReabsorptionOnly' - modeling the rate of thiamine loss with the process of active reabsorption only. The ThReabsorptionAndSecretion catalog contains data for three life history types: iteroparity (baseline model), semelparity, and determinate growth (constant mass of somatic tissues in adults). Mapping of the QTLs governing grain micronutrients and thousand kernel weight in wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) using high density SNP markers

<p>The mapping population consists of 166 recombinant inbred lines (RILs) derived from a cross between HD3086 and HI1500.</p> <p><strong>Phenotypic data</strong><br>The RILs population along with parents were evaluated under four conditions namely timely sown irrigation (TSIR) taken as control, timely sown restricted irrigation (TSRI), late sown irrigation (LSIR), and late sown restricted irrigation (LSRI) conditions at Delhi, and under restricted irrigation condition at Indore. From each plot, 20 random spikes were harvested and spikes from each plot were threshed separately. While cleaning, care was taken to prevent metal and dust contamination. The grain iron concentration (GFeC) and grain zinc concentration (GZnC) were measured using Energy Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (ED-XRF) machine (model X-Supreme 8000 M/s Oxford Inc, USA).  The thousand kernel weight (TKW) was recorded by counting 1000 grains manually and weighted with an electronic balance.</p> <p><strong>Genotypic data</strong><br>DNA was extracted from 21 days old seedlings using CTAB method (Murray and Thompson, 1980). Genomic DNA quality was determined using 0.8% agarose gel electrophoresis with λ DNA as the standard and quantified using nanodrop. The 35K SNP Axiom breeders' array was used for genotyping of parents and the RILs population.</p>

Micronutrients enhance macronutrient effects in a meta-analysis of grassland arthropod abundance

Aim: Ongoing alterations to Earth's biogeochemical cycles (e.g. via fertilization, burning of fossil fuels, and pollution) are expected to impact plants, plant consumers, and all subsequent trophic levels. While fertilization experiments often reveal arthropod nutrient limitation by nitrogen and phosphorus via effects on plant nutrient density and biomass, these macronutrients are only two of many nutrients important to arthropod fitness. Micronutrients are key to osmoregulation and enzyme function and can interact synergistically with macronutrients to shape the geography of arthropod abundance. We examine arthropod response to macro- and micronutrient fertilization as a function of nutrient type, application amount, duration, frequency, and plant responses to fertilization with the goal of addressing how ongoing alterations to biogeochemical cycles will shape future grassland food webs. Location: Global. Time period: 1987-2018. Major taxa studied: Invertebrates. Methods: We compiled a database of 62 studies to test the response of six arthropod trophic groups to multiple fertilizer types (compositions of varying macro- and micronutrients), quantities, application frequencies, and application durations. Additionally, we examined the role of plant nutrient content and biomass in mediating arthropod responses to fertilization. Results: Micronutrients applied alone had no effects on plant biomass nor arthropod abundance. However, when added with macronutrients, micronutrients amplified the effect of N, P, and K in promoting arthropod abundance, a synergy which did not affect plant biomass. Micronutrients thus catalyzed the ability of macronutrients to promote arthropod abundance across all guilds studied. Main conclusions: In grasslands, the rules governing the abundance of autotrophs and their consumers appear to differ fundamentally in their response to Earth's changing biogeochemistry. By revealing the importance of micronutrients for arthropods using a global dataset, we highlight a stoichiometric disjunction between limits of plants and arthropods for metal cations whose biogeochemistry, along with N and P, are being actively rearranged in the Anthropocene.

Data from: Multiple micronutrient status and predictors of anemia in young children aged 12-23 months living in New Delhi, India

Anemia has been identified as a severe public health concern among young children in India, however, information on the prevalence of anemia attributed to micronutrient deficiencies is lacking. We aimed to assess multiple micronutrient status (iron, zinc, selenium, vitamin A, vitamin D, folate and vitamin B12) in young Indian children and to investigate the role of these seven micronutrients and other non-nutritional factors on hemoglobin concentrations and anemia. One-hundred and twenty children aged 12 to 23 months were included in a cross-sectional nutritional assessment survey, of which 77 children provided a blood sample. Hemoglobin (Hb), serum ferritin, soluble transferrin receptor (sTfR), total body iron, zinc, selenium, retinol binding protein (RBP), folate, vitamin B12 and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) were measured, and adjusted for inflammation using C-reactive protein (CRP) and α-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP), where appropriate. Predictors for hemoglobin and anemia were identified in multiple regression models. Most of the children were classified as anemic, of which 86 to 93% was associated with iron deficiency depending on the indicator applied. Deficiencies of folate (37%), and notably vitamin D (74%) were also common; fewer children were classified with deficiencies of vitamin B12 (29%), zinc (25%), and vitamin A (17%) and selenium deficiency was nearly absent. Multiple micronutrient deficiencies were common with over half (57%) deficient in three or more micronutrients, and less than 10% of children were classified with adequate status for all the micronutrients measured. Iron status was found to be the only nutritional factor statistically significantly inversely associated with anemia (P = 0.003) in multivariate analysis after controlling for sex. A coordinated multi-micronutrient program is urgently needed to combat the co-existing micronutrient deficiencies in these young children to improve micronutrient status and reduce the high burden of childhood anemia.
