Monitoring of Microtus ochrogaster and Microtus pennsylvanicus populations in three different habitats in east-central Illinois, 1972 to 1997.
Populations of 2 species of arvicoline rodents, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) and meadow vole (Microtus pennsylvanicus), were monitored monthly from 1972-1997 in three distinct habitats: restored tallgrass prairie, bluegrass (Poa pratensis) and alfalfa (Medicago sativa). The study sites were located in the University of Illinois Biological Research Area (Phillips Tract) and Trelease Prairie. Tallgrass prairie was the original habitat of both species in Illinois. Bluegrass, an introduced species, represents the more common habitat in which the two species can be found today in Illinois. Alfalfa, an atypical habitat, provides an abundant source of high-quality food for both species. At each station, one wooden multiple-capture live-trap was placed. Every month, a two-day period of prebaiting was followed by a 3-day trapping session. The data include the species, individual identification, grid station, sex, reproductive status and body mass. Over the span of 25 years, three trapping sessions monthly were conducted to cover the three habitats, dedicating three weeks each month. Several papers have been based on these data.
Twice weekly monitoring of a Microtus ochrogaster population and social behavior in alfalfa in eastern Illinois, 1982-1987.
These data were obtained as part of a field study on social behavior of the prairie vole, Microtus ochrogaster in alfalfa. The study was conducted in two adjacent 1-ha alfalfa (Medicago sativa) fields within the University of Illinois Biological Research Area (Phillips Tract). Social groups were monitored over a 63-month period, from March 1982 through July 1984 in field 1 and from October 1983 to May 1987 in field 2, by locating underground and surface nests and subsequent trapping, twice weekly. 4-5 live traps were set around the entrances to underground nests and runways leading to a surface nest of social groups. Each month the study sites were also trapped at a 10-m grid interval as a part of an ongoing 25-year trapping study (Getz, L.L. 2024. The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets. The project is a large synthesis effort focused on improving the accessibility and use of long-term data. At present, there are ~50 state and federally funded research sites that are participating and contributing to the EcoTrends project, including all 26 Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites and sites funded by the USDA Agriculture Research Service (ARS), USDA Forest Service, US Department of Energy, US Geological Survey (USGS) and numerous universities. Data from the EcoTrends project are available through an exploratory web portal (http://www.ecotrends.info). This web portal enables the continuation of data compilation and accessibility by users through an interactive web application. Ongoing data compilation is updated through both manual and automatic processing as part of the LTER Provenance Aware Synthesis Tracking Architecture (PASTA). The web portal is a collaboration between the Jornada LTER and the LTER Network Office. The following dataset from Konza Prairie (KNZ) contains animal abundance of Microtus ochrogaster measurements in numberPerTransectLinePer4DayTrapSeason units and were aggregated to a yearly timescale.

Behavioral trajectories of aging prairie voles (Microtus ochrogaster): Adapting behavior to social context wanes with advanced age
<p>Several studies using mice have examined the effects of aging on cognitive tasks, as well as sensory and motor functions. However, few studies have examined the influence of aging on social behavior. Prairie voles (<em>Microtus ochrogaster</em>) are a socially monogamous and biparental rodent that live in small family groups and are now among the most popular rodent models for studies examining social behavior. Although the social behavioral trajectories of early-life development in prairie voles have been well-studied, how social behavior may change throughout adulthood remains unknown. Here we examined behavior in virgin male and female prairie voles in four different age groups: postnatal day (PND) 60–80, 140–160, 220–240, and 300–320. All animals underwent testing in a novel object task, a dominance test, a resident-intruder test, and several iterations of social approach and social interaction tests with varying types of social stimuli (i.e., novel same-sex conspecific, novel opposite-sex conspecific, familiar same-sex sibling/cagemate, small group of novel same-sex conspecifics). We found that age influenced neophobia and dominance, but not social approach behavior. Further, we found that young adult, but not older adult, prairie voles adapt prosocial and aggressive behavior relative to social context and that selective aggression occurs in relation to age even in the absence of a pair bond. Our results suggest that prairie voles calibrate social phenotype in a context-dependent manner in young adulthood and stop adjusting behavior to social context in advanced age, demonstrating that social behavior is plastic not only throughout early development but also well into adulthood. Together, this study provides insight into age-related changes in social behavior in prairie voles and shows that prairie voles may be a viable model for studying the cognitive and physiological benefits of social relationships and social engagement in advanced age.</p>
