Mid-winter habitat suitability indices for centrarchids in contiguous lentic areas of the Upper Mississippi River System: 1994-2018

This dataset includes raw measurements and calculated bluegill winter habitat suitability indices for depth (HSID), dissolved oxygen (HSIDO), temperature (HSIT), and flow (HSIF), as well as an overall bluegill winter habitat suitability index (HSIO), for 2915 mid-winter, lentic sampling locations across 208 contiguous lentic areas throughout the Upper Mississippi River System (Upper Mississippi and Illinois Rivers) from 1994-2018. This dataset also includes several spatial and temporal climatic and hydrogeomorphic parameters that were used to assess potential drivers of winter habitat suitability.

Mississippi River spatial water chemistry Environmental Research Letters datasets

We mapped surface water chemistry along the entire length of the Upper Mississippi River (UMR) to understand spatial patterns in nitrate sources and processing. We used a sensor-based and boat-mounted sensing platform to continuously measure underway water chemistry. Measurements were linked with global positioning systems (GPS) to create maps of surface water chemistry. Here, we archive data associated with an Environmental Research Letters publication (Loken et al. 2018). Data include a single spatial survey of the entire length of the UMR (Minneapolis, Minnesota to Cairo, Illinois) in August 2015 and repeat surveys in Navigation Pool 8 (located near La Crosse, WI). Data have been provided in three formats (raw, hydraulic-corrected, and tau-corrected). Additionally, we archive laboratory chemistry data from water samples collected during the project. Sites include a range of main channel, backwaters, and tributaries. Water chemistry samples were analyzed at the North Temperate Lakes - Long Term Ecological Research facility and linked with underway sensor measurements.

Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Yellow Perch and Bluegill Diet Study, Lower Pool 4 Mississippi River, 2018-2019

To assess potential dietary overlap and predation between bluegill and yellow perch, we examined stomach content of both species in three backwater contiguous lakes of Lower Pool 4 in the Mississippi River from May 2018 through January 2019. In this area, bluegill have been common for decades, but yellow perch only became abundant following an ecological shift to a clear-water, macrophyte dominated state that occurred from 2007 - 2007. We used daytime electrofishing to collect fish during open-water sampling (spring, summer, and fall) and ice angling during ice-covered sampling (winter). The dataset documents the diet content of one hundred and eighty-nine yellow perch and sixty-one bluegill. Stomach contents were extracted via gastric lavage in the spring, summer, and fall and via stomach removal in the winter. All prey items were categorized to lowest identifiable taxonomic level and quantified via volumetric displacement.

Eddy covariance 30-minute CO2 fluxes with accompanying biophysical variables from the Grand Bay, Mississippi flux tower site from March 2018 to January 2019

Eddy covariance (EC) CO2 fluxes from March 2018 to January 2019 collected over a Juncus roemerianus marsh located in the Grand Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (NERR) in Mississippi. EC fluxes were processed in EddyPro 7. Additional biophysical variables included are air temperature, relative humidity, vapor pressure deficit, soil temperature, and water table height within the marsh.

Disturbance and recovery of salt marsh arthropod communities in Louisiana and Mississippi following the 2010 BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico

Oil spills represent a major environmental threat to coastal wetlands, which provide a variety of critical ecosystem services to humanity. The U.S. Gulf of Mexico is a hub of oil and gas exploration and production with recognized consequences on intertidal habitats, such as the salt marsh. Following the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill, we sampled the marine invertebrate and the terrestrial arthropod community found in stands of Spartina alterniflora, the most abundant plant in coastal salt marshes, in 2010 as oil was washing ashore and a year later in 2011. In 2010, intertidal crabs and terrestrial arthropods (insects and spiders) were suppressed by oil exposure even in seemingly unaffected stands of plants; however, Littoraria snails appeared unaffected. One year later, crab and arthropods appeared to have largely recovered. Our work is the first attempt that we know of assessing vulnerability of the salt marsh arthropod community to oil exposure, and it suggests that arthropods are both quite vulnerable to oil exposure, and quite resilient, able to recover from exposure within a year if host plants remain healthy. BP's Deepwater Horizon spill in the Gulf Coast presented an opportunity to understand how stress from an oil spill might affect variables that we were measuring in the area. The study was conducted at sites in Louisiana and Mississippi. At each site, a 100m transect was sampled within 5m of the dead zone boundary. Sampling was conducted in August 2010 and August 2011. The number of sites and location of sites differed slightly among years.

Time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography and seismic reflection imaging of a shallow ground-water aquifer (0-50 m): Mississippi River levee seepage across the Duncan Point bar, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, U.S.A.

<p>The electrical resisitivity raw data files are slightly processed to remove bad data points but can be inverted using tomographic inversion code.&nbsp;</p> <p>The seismic data were assembled in Seismic Unix format, a shortened version of the SEG-Y format (Society of Exploration Geophysicists Exchange Format-Y https: //seg. org/Publications/SEG-Technical-Standards), that has the 3200-byte EBCDIC and 400-byte tape header removed. The data uploaded online (<a href="https://zenodo.org/records/14776025">https://zenodo.org/records/14776025</a>) is a CMP brute-stacked seismic section. &nbsp;</p> <p>During data collection, shotpoint location changed proceeding along a 136-degree azimuth (south-easterly direction), and spaced every 1 m.</p> <p>A total of 48, horizontal-component 28-Hz nominal geophones were placed every one meter and shotpoints were located half-way between geophones. Geophones remained fixed at their locations throughout the survey and so the CMP spacing is nominally 0.5-m but fold varies linearly from a value of 1 from either side of the survey to a central maximum of 24. &nbsp;The seismic source consisted of a partially buried 20-lb steel I-beam struck repeatedly on either side three times by an 8-lb sledge hammer.&nbsp; Data of the same striking polarity were added in-phase in the field.&nbsp; Data with opposing polarity at each shotpoint location were subtracted later to enhance SH-wave data and suppress converted SH-to-P waves.</p> <p>Seismic processing is minimal and consists of standard surface-wave muting, elimination of bad seismic traces, normal moveout, bandpass filtering (between 12 Hz and 50 Hz) and preliminary stacking with trace mixing every 3 CMPs. &nbsp;The data were stacked with a single velocity throughout that ranged from 80 m/s (Vs) at 0.2 s, to 100 m/s at 0.35 s and reached 180 m/s at 0.5 s of two-way traveltime.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

MarTREC Project Datasets for Effect of Permeability Variation of Expansive Yazoo Clay at the Maritime and Multimodal Transportation Infrastructure in Mississippi

<p>The existence of Yazoo clay soil in Mississippi frequently causes distress to the pavement and cause deformation at the slopes in highways and levees, which are a critical component in Maritime and multimodal transportation infrastructure. Each year, fixing the pavement requires a significant maintenance budget of MDOT. Also, the infiltration of the rainwater in the highway and levee slopes leads to landslides, which require millions of maintenance dollars each year. Due to the shrinkage and swelling behavior of the Yazoo clay, the hydraulic conductivity varies over the different seasons and has higher vertical permeability during the dry season. With high vertical permeability, the rainwater can easily percolate in the pavement subgrade and slopes, which accelerates the failure. The current study investigates the change in unsaturated vertical and horizontal permeability and its effect on the maritime and multimodal infrastructures, especially on the pavement and slopes of highway embankment and levees. The attached datasets include the laboratory test and finite element modeling findings.</p>

Proximal and ultimate influences on planform change in Bayou Pierre, Mississippi

<p>Channel incision and associated planform changes are widespread in the Gulf Coastal Plain of the United States, following a century of sediment reduction activities. These processes cause numerous threats to infrastructure, social, and ecological systems. While the drivers of channel incision are well documented for some watersheds in the region, others remain understudied. Bayou Pierre, Mississippi, is a small watershed draining directly to the lower Mississippi River with a contentious debate regarding origins of erosional processes. The watershed is home to one listed species (Bayou Darter <em>Nothonotus rubrus</em>) as well as a diverse aquatic biota assemblage. Determining potential drivers of erosional activities in the watershed will be critical for effective mitigation or restoration activities. This dataset compiles information from numerous other datasets to construct histories of Mississippi River architectural change, land use change, and climate patterns to construct a history of potential erosional influences in the watershed. It further contains original measurements of planform dynamics over a sixty year period, and analyses of how changes to planform relate to recent and historical influences. In addition, a secondary assessment of both accuracy and precision of measurement methods are included. </p>

Planform change and Fundulus SNP data for small watersheds in South Mississippi and Louisiana

<p>Fluvial geomorphic processes and the resulting patterns of landform morphogenesis affect the distribution and connectivity of habitat patches for aquatic organisms. Human alterations to fluvial geomorphic processes may affect local habitat quality and stability, and affect connectivity of habitat patches by altering the distribution, supply, and movement of landform-generating materials. This dataset examines 17 watersheds in south Mississippi and southeastern Louisiana and was used in preparation of a manuscript addressing the hypothesis that elevated planform movement, indicative of advanced fluvial erosion, would cause fragmentation among populations of a headwater specialist (Blackspotted Topminnow <em>Fundulus olivaceus</em>). The dataset includes numerous spatial features derived from the NHD+ dataset used in planform measurements, spatial features digitized from NAPP and NAIP aerial imagery measuring planform characteristics and dynamics, additional metrics of each watershed, and a population genetics dataset of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for multiple individuals at multiple sites per watershed. Associated code to recreate all analyses in the manuscript is provided.</p>

Variability in the discharge of the Mississippi River and tributaries from 1817 to 2020

<p>This is a two-hundred-year long dataset of the annual average, minimum, and maximum discharges at five stations draining the Mississippi River watershed: at Clinton, IA, Herman, MO, St. Louis, MO, Louisville, KY, and Vicksburg, MS. The data are useful to test for increases in the three discharge metrics, and correlations with air pressure differentials represented in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) Index. These data may be useful for climate change assessments through modeling or synthetic assessments using other data sets.</p>

Total water storage anomalies (TWSA) and streamflow in the Mississippi River Basin for 01/2003 to 12/2016

<p>This dataset includes observations and simulations of total water storage anomalies (TWSA) as well as streamflow that were used in the paper Schulze et al. (2024). The data covers the time period from 01/2003 to 12/2016. The TWSA [in millimeters] are basin averages, while the streamflow data [in cubic meters per second] refer to 68 gauge stations distributed over the Mississippi River Basin.&nbsp;</p> <p>The TWSA observations are derived from the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) satellite mission. The streamflow observations are provided by the Global Runoff Database (GRDC).</p> <p>The simulations are uncalibrated model runs of the WaterGAP Global Hydrology Model (WGHM; based on WaterGAP version 2.2d) as well as an Open Loop Simulation and simulations by assimilating GRACE-derived TWSA and/or streamflow observations. The TWSA observations are assimilated on a 4&deg;x4&deg; grid. The streamflow observations are assimilated at (1) all gauge stations with mean observed streamflow above 500 cubic meters per second, (2) all gauge stations with mean observed streamflow between 10 and 100 cubic meters per second, and (3) at randomly selected gauge stations.</p> <p>All files are packaged into a single ZIP archive for easy access and distribution.</p> <p>More details about the dataset and the assimilation are provided in:<br>Schulze, K., Kusche, J., Gerdener, H., D&ouml;ll, P., M&uuml;ller Schmied, H.
