This desk review evaluates the current state of interventions for mental health and cognitive functioning among older adults in Switzerland focusing on the features of these interventions as well as on Swiss-specific contextual factors that contribute to vulnerability and stigma. This results of the desk review has been submitted for publication to 'LIVES Working Papers' and 'Swiss Psychology Open' . The two versions of the desk review differ slightly. The version for LIVES Working Papers, included the results of the Delphi survey and the resulting intervention scenarios. The version for Swiss Psychology Open, did not include the Delphi survey results and the resulting intervention scenarios, but included a more detailed discussion of the review results.</p>

Simulated Solar Spectra for Testing Stellar Activity Mitigation Strategies

<p>Recent and upcoming stabilized spectrographs are pushing the frontier for &nbsp;Doppler spectroscopy to detect and characterize low-mass planets. &nbsp;Specifications for these instruments are so impressive that intrinsic stellar variability is&nbsp;expected to&nbsp;limit&nbsp;their Doppler precision for most target&nbsp;stars &nbsp;(Fischer et&nbsp;al. &nbsp;2016). &nbsp; In order to realize&nbsp;their full&nbsp;potential, astronomers must develop&nbsp;new&nbsp;strategies for distinguishing true &nbsp;Doppler&nbsp;shifts from&nbsp;intrinsic&nbsp;stellar variability. &nbsp; Stellar&nbsp;variability due to&nbsp;starspots, &nbsp;faculae, and other rotationally-linked variability is particularly concerning, as the stellar rotation period is often included in the range of potential planet orbital periods. &nbsp;In order to robustly detect and accurately characterize low-mass planets via Doppler planet surveys, the exoplanet community must develop statistical models capable of jointly modeling planetary perturbations and intrinsic stellar variability. Towards this effort, we present simulations of extremely high-resolution solar-like spectra created with SOAP 2.0(Dumusque et al. 2014) that includes multiple evolving starspots to aid in developing and testing future statistical methods.</p>

Database to: Effectiveness of soil management strategies for mitigation of N2O emissions in European arable land: A meta-analysis

<p>Database to a meta-analysis studing the effects of adding different organic matter inputs (crop residues, green manure, livestock manure, slurry, digestate, compost or biochar) to soils on N2O emissions. Database consists of over 50 field experiments conducted in 15 European countries. Diverse arable crops, mainly cereals, were cultivated in monoculture or in crop rotations on mineral soils. &nbsp;Cumulative N2O emissions per unit land area were monitored during periods of 30 to 1,070 days in treatments, which received organic matter inputs, alone or in combination with mineral N fertiliser; and in controls fertilised with mineral N. The original results appeared in 46 articles published between 1993 and 2022 in peer-reviewed scientific journals, as well as a project report, and a PhD thesis.</p>

Mitigating Traffic Congestion on I-10 in Baton Rouge, LA: Supply- and Demand-Oriented Strategies & Treatments

<p>Corresponding data set for Tran-SET Project No. 17ITSLSU09. Abstract of the final report is stated below for reference:</p> <p>&quot;The aim of this study is to develop a better understanding of the causes of traffic congestion on I-10 in the Baton Rouge, LA area, particularly at the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge, and to identify treatments and strategies to mitigate congestion at the bridge site. This study developed and calibrated a microsimulation model of I-10 (from Lobdell Highway in Port Allen to Highland Road, I-110 to Florida Street, and I-12 to Walker Road) and investigated several supply- and demand-oriented strategies. This includes: rehabilitation and utilization of the old Mississippi River Bridge on US-190 and the existing US-190/US-61 corridor, overall demand management of I-10 EB traffic, reduction in percent trucks traveling eastbound on I-10 during the A.M. peak period, and ramp metering at the on-ramp west of the I-10 Mississippi River Bridge. The majority of the tested strategies appear to be feasible and effective solutions; however, a combination of supply- and demand-oriented treatments must be implemented to fully relieve congestion on I-10 in Baton Rouge.&quot;</p>

Scaling up gas and electric cooking in low- and middle-income countries: Climate threat or mitigation strategy with co-benefits?

<p>Nearly three billion people in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) rely on polluting fuels, resulting in millions of avoidable deaths annually. Polluting fuels also emit short-lived climate forcers and greenhouse gases (GHGs). Liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and grid-based electricity are scalable alternatives to polluting fuels but have raised climate and health concerns. Here, we compare emissions and climate impacts of a business-as-usual household cooking fuel trajectory to four large-scale transitions to gas and/or grid electricity in 77 LMICs. We account for upstream and end-use emissions from gas and electric cooking, assuming electrical grids evolve according to the 2022 World Energy Outlook's "Stated Policies" Scenario. We input the emissions into a reduced-complexity climate model to estimate radiative forcing and temperature changes associated with each scenario. We find full transitions to LPG and/or electricity decrease emissions from both well-mixed GHG and short-lived climate forcers, resulting in a roughly 5 millikelvin global temperature reduction by 2040. Transitions to LPG and/or electricity also reduce annual emissions of PM2.5 by over 6 Mt (99%) by 2040, which would substantially lower health risks from Household Air Pollution.</p>

An experimental test of community-based strategies for mitigating human-wildlife conflict around protected areas

<p>Natural habitats are rapidly being converted to cultivated croplands, and crop-raiding by wildlife threatens both wildlife conservation and human livelihoods worldwide. We combined movement data from GPS-collared elephants with camera-trap data and local reporting systems in a before-after-control-impact design to evaluate community-based strategies for reducing crop raiding outside Mozambique's Gorongosa National Park. All types of experimental fences tested (beehive, chili, beehive and chili combined, and procedural controls) significantly reduced the number of times elephants left the Park to raid crops. However, placing beehive fences at a subset of key crossing locations reduced the probability that elephants would leave the Park by up to 95% relative to unfenced crossings, and was the most effective strategy. Beehive fences also created opportunities for income generation via honey production. Our results provide experimental evidence that working with local communities to modify both animal behavior and human attitudes can mitigate conflict at the human-wildlife interface.</p>

<p>Data employed for the paper "Mitigation strategies can alleviate power system vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather: A case study on the Italian grid"<br><br>Abstract<br>This study explores compounding impacts of climate change on power system's load and generation, emphasising the need to integrate adaptation and mitigation strategies into investment planning. We combine existing and novel empirical evidence to model impacts on: i) air-conditioning demand; ii) thermal power outages; iii) hydro-power generation shortages. Using a power dispatch and capacity expansion model, we analyse the Italian power system's response to these climate impacts in 2030, integrating mitigation targets and optimising for cost-efficiency at an hourly resolution. We outline different meteorological scenarios to explore the impacts of both average climatic changes and the intensification of extreme weather events. We find that addressing extreme weather in power system planning will require an extra 5-8 GW of &nbsp;photovoltaic &nbsp;(PV) capacity, on top of the 50 GW of the additional solar PV capacity required by the mitigation target alone. Despite the higher initial investments, we find that the adoption of renewable technologies, especially PV, alleviates the power system's vulnerability to climate change and extreme weather events. In fact, renewable energy sources are generally less vulnerable to the impacts of climate change, such as rising temperatures and shifting precipitation patterns, compared to thermal power and hydropower generation. Furthermore, enhancing short-term storage with lithium-ion batteries is crucial to counterbalance the reduced availability of dispatchable hydro generation.</p>

Signal lengthening is not a strategy for animals to mitigate noise interference

<p><span>Many species of animals rely on acoustic communication for critical life activities. The efficacy of acoustic communication, however, can be seriously hindered by ambient noise. Although it has been widely reported that signallers modify the structure of their acoustic signals in noise, whether such signal modulations contribute to reducing noise interference is often unclear. Signal duration is a perceptually important parameter that can directly affect signal detection. Here, we address whether signal lengthening is an adaptive strategy for improving acoustic communication in noise, combing results from a meta-analysis, a noise playback experiment, and numerical simulations. The meta-analysis showed that animals from arthropods to mammals showed a mixed pattern of signal duration modifications in response to noise, covering all three possibilities of an increase, a decrease, and no change. The noise playback experiment revealed that noise-induced signal duration modulation was characterized by strong inter-individual variations and correlated positively with signal amplitude, challenging the functional role of signal lengthening in reducing noise interference. Lastly, numerical simulations suggest that experimentally observed signal duration increases in noise disappear when the effect size is considered. We conclude that signal lengthening is not a strategy for animals to mitigate noise interference, despite its wide occurrence. </span></p>
