Monthly precipitation in mm at 1 km resolution (multisource average) based on SM2RAIN-ASCAT 2007-2021, CHELSA Climate and WorldClim

Monthly precipitation in mm at 1 km resolution based on SM2RAIN-ASCAT 2007-2021 (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.2615278). Downscaled to 1 km resolution using gdalwarp (cubic splines) and combined with WorldClim (https://worldclim.org/data/worldclim21.html) and CHELSA Climate (https://chelsa-climate.org/downloads/) monthly values. Final values are estimated as a simple average between the three precipitation data sources; a more objective approach would be to use training points e.g. meteo-station monthly values, then train an ensemble model using the 3 data sources as independent variables. Another global data source of precipitation images is the monthly IMERGE dataset, however this requires transformation and is available only for limited span of years.

Processing steps are available here. Extended datasets from MM-IMDB and Ads-Parallelity dataset with the features from Google Cloud Vision API

This is extended datasets from MM-IMDB [Arevalo+ ICLRW'17], Ads-Parallelity [Zhang+ BMVC'18] dataset with the features from Google Cloud Vision API. These datasets are stored in jsonl (JSON Lines) format.

Abstract (from our paper):

There is increasing interest in the use of multimodal data in various web applications, such as digital advertising and e-commerce. Typical methods for extracting important information from multimodal data rely on a mid-fusion architecture that combines the feature representations from multiple encoders. However, as the number of modalities increases, several potential problems with the mid-fusion model structure arise, such as an increase in the dimensionality of the concatenated multimodal features and missing modalities. To address these problems, we propose a new concept that considers multimodal inputs as a set of sequences, namely, deep multimodal sequence sets (DM2S2). Our set-aware concept consists of three components that capture the relationships among multiple modalities: (a) a BERT-based encoder to handle the inter- and intra-order of elements in the sequences, (b) intra-modality residual attention (IntraMRA) to capture the importance of the elements in a modality, and (c) inter-modality residual attention (InterMRA) to enhance the importance of elements with modality-level granularity further. Our concept exhibits performance that is comparable to or better than the previous set-aware models. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the visualization of the learned InterMRA and IntraMRA weights can provide an interpretation of the prediction results.

Dataset (MM-IMDB and Ads-Parallelity):

We extended two multimodal datasets, namely, MM-IMDB [Arevalo+ ICLRW'17], Ads-Parallelity [Zhang+ BMVC'18] for the empirical experiments. The MM-IMDB dataset contains 25,925 movies with multiple labels (genres). We used the original split provided in the dataset and reported the F1 scores (micro, macro, and samples) of the test set. The Ads-Parallelity dataset contains 670 images and slogans from persuasive advertisements to understand the implicit relationship (parallel and non-parallel) between these two modalities. A binary classification task is used to predict whether the text and image in the same ad convey the same message.

We transformed the following multimodal information (i.e., visual, textual, and categorical data) into textual tokens and fed these into our proposed model. We used the Google Cloud Vision API for the visual features to obtain the following four pieces of information as tokens: (1) text from the OCR, (2) category labels from the label detection, (3) object tags from the object detection, and (4) the number of faces from the facial detection. We input the labels and object detection results as a sequence in order of confidence, as obtained from the API. We describe the visual, textual, and categorical features of each dataset below.

MM-IMDB: We used the title and plot of movies as the textual features, and the aforementioned API results based on poster images as visual features.

Ads-Parallelity: We used the same API-based visual features as in MM-IMDB. Furthermore, we used textual and categorical features consisting of textual inputs of transcriptions and messages, and categorical inputs of natural and text concrete images.

Interagency Ecological Program San Francisco Estuary 20-mm Survey 1995 - 2024

The Interagency Ecological Program San Francisco Estuary 20-mm Survey was initiated by the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) in 1995 to monitor the distribution and abundance of post-larval and juvenile Delta Smelt (Hypomesus transpacificus). Delta Smelt are considered to be an annual fish endemic to the upper San Francisco Estuary that spawn in early spring and rear through the summer and fall in fresh to brackish water. Young of the Year (YOY) Delta Smelt are considered juveniles at sizes greater than or equal to 20-mm, and this survey targets those Delta Smelt. The 20-mm Survey currently samples 61 stations at fixed locations from San Pablo Bay through Suisun Bay and into the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta every other week from March to July. The survey has historically sampled between 41 and 55 stations. At each station, three 10-minute stepped oblique tows are conducted for fish. Each stepped oblique tow follows a tow schedule to sample the water column up to 32 ft, and the volume of water sampled is estimated using a General Oceanics flowmeter. The net is a cone shaped plankton net composed of 1600μm mesh and measuring 5.5 meters in length with a mouth area of 1.51m2 lashed onto a rigid D-frame with skis. Post-larval and juvenile fish samples are preserved in the field in 10% Formalin dyed with Rose Bengal and brought back to the CDFW Stockton Lab for identification to species and enumeration under a microscope. Fish are measured to fork length or total length when fork is not present. At each station, environmental and water quality data are also collected, and include: top temperature, top and bottom electrical conductivity (normalized at 25 degree C), secchi (cm), surface water clarity (FNU), and tidal condition.

These functionalized vapor cells (FVCs) embody a dual-chamber design in low-conductivity silicon with anti-permeation coatings and micro-structured thin-film platinum surface traces as resistive heaters and temperature sensors. Thermal tests show our ability to control alkali metal distribution within the FVCs, ensuring a clean sensing chamber for optical measurements. Optical absorption spectroscopy is used to correlate the temperature readings with vapor density and to measure buffer gas pressure, of interest for optimizing sensitivity. Finally, we demonstrate zero-field resonance magnetometry with 18 fT/√Hz sensitivity in the 10 Hz to 100 Hz band, limited by laser noise and magnetic shield noise, which indicates that the functionalization does not introduce significant magnetic noise.
