Lake Sediment Pollen from Mohawk Pond in Litchfield CT from 12860 BP to Present
Aim We analyzed a dataset composed of multiple palaeoclimate and lake-sediment pollen records from New England to explore how postglacial changes in the composition and spatial patterns of vegetation were controlled by regional-scale climate change, a subregional environmental gradient, and landscape-scale variations in soil characteristics. Location The 120,000-km2 study area includes parts of Vermont and New Hampshire in the north, where sites are 150-200 km from the Atlantic Ocean, and spans the coastline from southeastern New York to Cape Cod and the adjacent islands, including Block Island, the Elizabeth Islands, Nantucket, and Martha’s Vineyard. Results Boreal forest featuring Picea and Pinus banksiana was present across the region when conditions were cool and dry 14,000-12,000 calibrated 14C yrs before present (ybp). Pinus strobus became regionally dominant as temperatures increased between 12,000 and 10,000 ybp. The composition of forests in inland and coastal areas diverged in response to further warming after 10,000 ybp, when Quercus and Pinus rigida expanded across southern New England, while conditions remained cool enough in inland areas to maintain Pinus strobus. Increasing precipitation allowed Tsuga canadensis, Fagus grandifolia, and Betula to replace Pinus strobus in inland areas during 9000-8000 ybp, and also led to the expansion of Carya across the coastal part of the region beginning at 7000-6000 ybp. Abrupt cooling at 5500-5000 ybp caused sharp declines in Tsuga in inland areas and Quercus at some coastal sites, and the populations of those taxa remained low until they recovered around 3000 ybp in response to rising precipitation. Throughout most of the Holocene, sites underlain by sandy glacial deposits were occupied by Pinus rigida and Quercus. SBC LTER: Ocean: Currents and Biogeochemistry: Moored CTD and ADCP data from Mohawk Outside Spar (MKO), ongoing since 2005
ADCP (Currents), CTD (Hydrography) and Optics data (Fluorescence, Beam Attenuation and Volume Scattering Function) were collected at Mohawk Reef in the Santa Barbara Channel (site ID: MKO). Data have been interpolated to a 20 minute interval. ADCP data are binned at a 0.5 meter interval, measured as height from the bottom to a maximum of 16 bins. All bins may not be filled, and in some cases, data from bins technically above the surface are included. VSF data are available at angles, 100, 125 and 150 degrees. CTD parameters include Pressure, Temperature, Conductivity, Salinity, Density and Fluorescence. The CTD array is located approximately 4.5 meters from the surface, and there are additional temperature thermistors near the CTD array, at the bottom, and mid way between these two.
SBC LTER: Ocean: High resolution water temperature at Mohawk and Arroyo Quemado, ongoing since 2018
Ocean in-situ temperature data were collected at two nearshore locations: Mohawk and Arroyo Quemado. There are three sites at each of the locations: inshore, offshore, and east of reef. Temperature was recorded using hobo sensors at 1-meter interval along the water column, and the sampling interval is 2 minutes.
SBC LTER: Reef: Kelp Nitrogen uptake in Carpinteria and Mohawk kelp forests, 2016-2017
A large on-going time-series monthly water samples have been taken at 1m, 5 m and 10 m depth from the offshore edge of five kelp forests near Santa Barbara, CA, USA (Arroyo Burro, Arroyo Quemado, Carpinteria, Mohawk, Naples). See dataset: http://sbc.lternet.edu/cgi-bin/showDataset.cgi?docid=knb-lter-sbc.10. Two datasets are presented here. One is a field study conducted in two of the sites (Mohawk or Carpinteria) to test the N uptake of giant kelp (Macrocystis pyrifera) and phytoplankton from May 2016 to October 2017. In situ rates of urea, ammonium and nitrate uptake by giant kelp blades and phytoplankton, which were enclosed together within polyethylene blade bags, from the surface canopy of Mohawk or Carpinteria kelp forests. The second dataset has the results of laboratory experiments for testing the direct uptake of urea by whole blades and natural phytoplankton communities entrained in surface canopy waters.
SBC LTER : Reef: Macrocystis pyrifera frond morphology at Mohawk Reef
These data describe the morphology of actively growing, surface-canopy fronds of the giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera collected from the interior and edge of the kelp forest at Mohawk Reef near Santa Barbara, CA from May 2005 to April 2006. Included are values for the length, wet mass, stipe diameter, stipe mass, number of blades, and total blade mass of the midwater and canopy portion of each frond. These data were used by Stewart et al. (2009) to differences in growth, morphology and tissue C and N of M. pyrifera within and at the outer edge of a giant kelp forest.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Time-series: Mid-water SeaFET pH and CO2 system chemistry with surface and bottom Dissolved Oxygen at Mohawk Reef(MKO), 2012 - 2017
Calibrated pH (Total scale, SeaFET sensor) an disoolved oxygen (miniDOT)data were collected from Mohawk Reef in the Santa Barbara Channel (site ID: MKO). pH data are accompanied by in situ temperature and associated carbonate chemistry parameters. The SeaFET instrument is located about 4 meters from the surface, with other moored instruments. Associated carbonate chemistry parameters were calculated with the CO2calc programs from USGS, and include: partial pressure and fugosity of CO2, concentrations of bicarbonate, carbonate and hyrdroxide ion, Omega (saturation state) of calcite and aragonite. Dissolved oxygen sensors (miniDOT, PME) were added in 2014, and are mounted near the ocean surface and near the seafloor, and also report temperature. All data have been interpolated to a 20 minute time interval for compatibility with other SBC LTER moored instrument data. Data coverage is 2012-01-11 to 2017-12-19.The update of this dataset was terminated in 2019. The EcoTrends project was established in 2004 by Dr. Debra Peters (Jornada Basin LTER, USDA-ARS Jornada Experimental Range) and Dr. Ariel Lugo (Luquillo LTER, USDA-FS Luquillo Experimental Forest) to support the collection and analysis of long-term ecological datasets.
