MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Population Dynamics: Symbiodinium population initial sampling conditions in corals of Moorea
These data consist of sample collection locations and conditions only, not the results of sequencing. These data were an initial collection of an expected time series which was not repeated. Clade data derived from the sample collection described here are archived on GeoSymbio. Coral are symbiotic with photosynthetic dinoflagellates from the genus Symbiodinium. There are eight divergent clades (A-H) within the genus which each contain many genetic varieties. Different types of Symbiodinium have been shown to affect the growth rate and thermal tolerance of the coral. The diversity and population structure of Symbiodinium on a reef and how it changes over time is therefore critical to the stability and resilience of coral reefs. Our research conducted through the MCR LTER project aims at defining the population structure of Symbiodinium present in the corals of Moorea and documenting changes over time. This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. National Science Foundation under Grant No. OCE 16-37396 (and earlier awards) as well as a generous gift from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Research was completed under permits issued by the French Polynesian Government (Délégation à la Recherche) and the Haut-commissariat de la République en Polynésie Francaise (DTRT) (Protocole d'Accueil 2005-2022). This work represents a contribution of the Moorea Coral Reef (MCR) LTER Site.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column microbial community data in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia
Microbes process a significant fraction of organic material in marine systems, and the composition and activity of their communities are strongly modulated by fluctuations in nutrient availability. To investigate the distribution and dynamics of microbial communities in tropical lagoon ecosystems, bacteria and archaea were quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during May 2021, April 2022, and April 2023 using eDNA sequencing. Environmental DNA was extracted and sequenced to assess microbial community composition, with data processed using the QIIME 2 platform (version 2023.7). Microbial communities in fringing reef habitats differed from those in mid-lagoon and back reef sites. These differences in microbial communities were related to patterns of water column nutrients and fluorescent dissolved organic matter, providing a baseline for understanding how lagoon microbial communities respond to spatial and temporal variability in reef environments.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Coral mortality in the lagoon of Moorea in 2019
The data included in this data package were collected in the lagoon of Moorea, French Polynesia. Data on coral mortality were collected in July 2019. Data on nitrogen content (%N) in the long-lived brown macroalga Turbinaria ornata were collected during six sampling campaigns between January 2016 and May 2021 to characterize nitrogen availability at each site. Data on seawater temperatures at six LTER sites in the back reef were collected from 2005-2019, but temperature loggers at two sites (LTER 1 and LTER 6) only recorded partial ocean temperature records during the heatwave from 2018-2019. We used our entire time series (spanning from 2005 to 2018) of temperature across our four long-term sites for which we have data in 2019 to predict ocean temperature data for LTER 1 and LTER 6 in 2019. These data were used for analyses in the manuscript entitled "Effects of nitrogen enrichment on coral mortality depend on the intensity of heat stress".
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Turbinaria CHN from a spatially explicit sampling campaign in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia
Nutrients are important for ecosystem structure and community dynamics. To quantify time-integrated patterns of nutrient regimes in tropical lagoon ecosystems, concentrations of nitrogen, hydrogen, and carbon were measured from tissues of the macroalga Turbinaria ornata collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia in 2016, 2017, and annually starting in 2019. These sampling periods initially corresponded with distinct seasonal shifts in rainfall and wave forcing and later focused on the rainy season. Results showed that N enrichment was highest nearshore in fringing reef habitats, as well as in bays and at reef passes.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column fDOM in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia
Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a mixture of organic materials that are dissolved in water. DOM represents a significant fraction of carbon and nutrient stocks in seawater. To quantify the distribution and dynamics of organic matter in nearshore marine environments, fluorescent dissolved organic matter (fDOM; a subset of DOM that fluoresces under ultraviolet light) was quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during May 2021, April 2022, and April 2023. fDOM components, such as humic-like compounds, as well as fDOM indices, such as the humification index, were measured using fluorometry (for more details refer to methods). Humification Index was higher in bays and fringing reef habitats, whereas Fluorescence Index and M:C ratio were higher further offshore at back reef sites.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Computer Vision: Moorea Labeled Corals
The Moorea Labeled Corals dataset is a subset of the MCR LTER packaged for computer vision research. It contains 2055 images from three habitats IDs: fringing reef outer 10m and outer 17m, from 2008, 2009 and 2010. It also contains random point annotation (row, col, label) for the nine most abundant labels, four non coral labels: (1) Crustose Coralline Algae (CCA), (2) Turf algae, (3) Macroalgae and (4) Sand, and five coral genera: (5) Acropora, (6) Pavona, (7) Montipora, (8) Pocillopora, and (9) Porites. These nine classes account for 96% of the annotations and total to almost 400,000 points. These nine classes are the ones analyzed in (Beijbom, 2012); less-abundant genera not treated in the automation are also present in the dataset. MCR LTER: Coral Reefs: Coral recruitment to 25 m2 plots on the forereef surrounding Moorea, French Polynesia, 2011-2015
These data report the number of Pocilloporid, Acroporid and Poritiid corals recruiting annually to permanent 5 m X 5 m plots established at a depth of approximately 10 m on the forereef of Moorea, French Polynesia. Plots were established following an outbreak (2007-2010) of the corallivorous crown-of-thorns seastars (Acanthaster planci) and the close passage of Cyclone Oli to Moorea in February, 2010. These two perturbations resulted in a significant loss of live coral coral from the forereef on an island-wide scale (crown-of-thorns) and the loss of habitat structural complexity from forereef habitats on Moorea's north shore (Cyclone Oli). See Adam, T.C. et al. 2011 "Herbivory, connectivity and ecosystem resilience: response of a coral reef to a large-scale perturbation" PLoS One e23717 for a more complete description of the system, the nature and magnitudes of the perturbations and the short-term response by the coral community to the perturbations. Data were obtained by counting all Pocilloporid, Acroporid and Poritiid coral recruits < 3 cm in colony diameter observed within 25 5 m x 5 m plots established at four sites in a depth of approximately 10 m on the forereef of Moorea, French Polynesia. Two sites, Resilience 1 (R1) containing five 5 m x 5 m plots and Resilience 2 (R2) containing ten 5 m x 5 m plots were established along the north shore of the island. Two additional sites, Resilience 4 (R4) and Resilience 5 (R5), each containing five 5 m x 5 m plots were established on the southeast and southwest shores of the island, respectively. The locations of the plots are permanently marked using stainless steel eye-bolts cemented into the reef matrix so that counts of coral recruits can be made repeatedly within the same plots on an annual basis. MCR LTER: Coral Reef: 2018 land cover map of Moorea, French Polynesia
Using a collection of imagery from June-September 2018 taken by the Worldview-3 satellite, land cover was classified for the island of Mo’orea, French Polynesia. A deep learning pixel classification model was trained for each of four separate dates of image collection when clouds were sparse over the island. The model was trained at the native resolution of the imagery (<2m pixels). Training data included the multispectral WV-3 bands in addition to derived bands that index vegetation productivity (NDVI), vegetation texture (NDVI IDM), and water cover (NDWI). A consensus land cover map was generated from model predictions across the four sets of imagery.

Spatial and diel patterns of volatile organic compounds, DMSP-derived compopunds and planktonic microorganisms around a tropical scleractinian coral colony. <em>Frontiers in Marine Science</em>.</p> <p>Concentrations of DMSP, acrylate, DMSO, DMS, DMDS, COS, CS2, isoprene, CH3I, CH2ClI, CH2Br2 and CHBr3 in seawater samples around colonies of the corals Acropora pulchra and Pocillopora sp., and the brown seaweed Turbinaria ornata. Abundances of high-DNA and low-DNA bacteria, Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, picoeukaryotes and nanoeukaryotes in the same samples, as determined by flow cytometry. All samples were collected in April 2018 in the coral reefs of Mo'orea, French Polynesia. </p> <p>The upper set of data contains concentrations at the distance of 0.5 cm from the coral polyps on the branch tips or verrucae, as well as from the seaweed thalli (samples IN), and 2 m away, downcurrent (samples OUT). The second set of data corresponds to A. pulchra only, and contains seawater samples IN, OUT and AL, the latter being sampled at 0.5 cm from the base of the dead branches colonized by a turf alga. IN, OUT and AL samples were collected over an entire diel cycle, every 6 hours for a period of 30 hours.</p>
DATASET From the Reef to the Ocean: Revealing the Acoustic Range of the Biophony of a Coral Reef (Moorea Island, French Polynesia)
<p>Dataset corresponding to the article "From the Reef to the Ocean: Revealing the Acoustic Range of the Biophony of a Coral Reef (Moorea Island, French Polynesia)". 90 sites were recorded from the reef crest to 10 km in the open ocean off Moorea Island (French Polynesia) in 2016. Recordings were realized with drifting antennas made of a floater and an autonomous recorder EA-SDA14 (RTSys®, Caudan, France) connected to a wideband low-noise hydrophone HTI-92 (High Tech Inc., Long Beach, MS, USA) with a sensitivity of −155 ± 3 dB re 1 V µPa−1 and a flat frequency response from 2 Hz to 50 kHz.</p>
Spatial and Social Behavior of Acanthurus triostegus on Moorea (French Polynesia) and Palmyra Atoll (USA), 2017-2018
These data describe the schooling behavior of coral reef fish on Moorea (French Polynesia) and Palmyra Atoll (USA) in 2017 and 2018. Data are grouped into two sets of observations: 1) surveys measuring the abundance of reef fish and the proportion of those fish occurring in schools, and 2) behavioral observations including time spent grazing and GPS tracks of schooling and solitary Acanthurus triostegus.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Water Column nutrient data in lagoons of Moorea, French Polynesia
Nutrients are important for ecosystem structure and community dynamics. To quantify fine-scale patterns of variation in water column nutrients in tropical lagoon ecosystems, nitrite + nitrate, phosphate, and silicate were quantified from water column samples collected in lagoons around Moorea, French Polynesia during April-May starting in 2021 using flow injection with an automated ion analyzer. Over the first three years, water column nitrite + nitrate and silicate were higher in bays and fringing reef habitats, and phosphate was higher in bays.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Diadema predation and recruitment in Moorea, French Polynesia
These are field data from Moorea, French Polynesia regarding the population dynamics of Diadema savignyi. Data were collected during the austral winters in 2009 and 2010. Four datasets are provided: (1) recruitment data of Diadema savignyi over the course of ~9 weeks during the austral winter of 2010, (2) predation data of adult Diadema using a tethering experiment, (3) urchin abundance surveys for 2009 and 2010, and (4) a 9 week weekly survey of newly recruited Diadema (test diameter). These data are part of a PhD dissertation, "Herbivore Community Dynamics and Functional Compositions in Moorea, French Polynesia", 2014, published by ProQuest.
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Effects of Flow and Temperature on Growth and Photophysiology of Scleractinian Corals in Moorea, French Polynesia
To test for threshold effects in the response of coral physiology to increasing seawater flow, field and laboratory experiments were conducted in Moorea. First, the growth of juvenile massive Porites spp. and branching P. irregularis was compared among habitats differing in water motion. Growth of massive Porites spp. responded to flow in a pattern consistent with a threshold effect, whereas growth of P. irregularis increased linearly with flow. Second, a recirculating flume was used to test the effect of flow on photophysiology (ΔF⁄Fm'), effective photochemical efficiency) for massive Porites spp.; ΔF⁄Fm' displayed a threshold response at 23 cm/sec and 28 °C, but not at 31 °C. Finally, intra-colony variation in the response of ΔF⁄Fm' to flow and temperature was explored to evaluate the functional significance of colony shape in small corals. ΔF⁄Fm' on the top and upstream surfaces of massive Porites spp. responded with a threshold effect of flow at 28 °C (but not 31 °C), but ΔF⁄Fm' on downstream surfaces was unresponsive to flow. ΔF⁄Fm' for P. irregularis was less responsive to flow than for massive Porites spp., suggesting that the photophysiological response of corals to varying flow speeds may differ between species and morphologies. Together, these results emphasize that flow can have diverse effects on the physiology of corals, with the outcome depending on flow speed, temperature, location on the colony, and perhaps morphology. These data were published in The Biological Bulletin and were part of the masters thesis of W. Goldenheim (2011).
MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Coupled Natural-Human Systems: GPS-enabled survey of fish in Moorea’s lagoons
This dataset includes counts and sizes of fish within Moorea’s lagoons, with more than 130,000 fish recorded between 2018 and 2021. In summer of each year observers swim through Moorea’s lagoons, observing a 5-m wide swath and recording species and sizes of fish encountered in every minute of swim (about 10 linear meters of sampling). The fish counts are limited to a fixed species list (57 taxa) which was chosen to capture most of the reef associated species targeted in Moorea’s fishery, as well as important herbivores. Only fish larger than 10 cm were recorded, a size chosen to match the small end of fish observed in the catch. The resulting counts were georeferenced based on simultaneously collecting GPS data. Data are presented here on the scale of a minute of sampling. PID Graph for Moorea Biocode Retrospective
<p>This GIF was created as part of the Moorea Biocode retrospective project. For this project, I created a data management plan using the DMPTool about 10 years after the project ended. I started the DMP using the original application submitted to the UCNRS. From this information, I added title, abstract, people associated with the project and funder. I searched the literature for Moorea Biocode and found publications and datasets, which I linked through related works on the DMP. With these links established, I used the DataCite DMP ID Jupyter Notebook and drew the three graphs - (1) before any works were added (2) after journal articles were added and (3) after datasets were added. This simulates the way that the <a href="https://www.project-freya.eu/en/pid-graph/the-pid-graph">PIDGraph (Persistent Identifier Graph)</a> would evolve over the life of the project. </p>
