Questionnaire data to research small-scale farmers' information sharing for adapting to climate change in Mozambique (2019-2020)
<p>Data collected from individual questionnaires with local communities of 4 districts of Mozambique in November 2019 and July 2020. It contains as well data from nine individual questionnaires to institutions (government and NGOs) working with local communities for their development.</p> <p>Data are replies from interviews containing open and closed questions about a) climate change adaptation options necessary for Mozambican small scale farmers, about b) the most used and preferred information sources of farmers, about c) the main barriers for a better exchange of information, and about d) proposals for improving it. The questionnaire can be consulted in Appendix A (in English and Portuguese). The open questions had the purpose to understand the causes and explanations about the themes presented. The closed questions followed a 0-5 likert scale approach, where 5 meant a very important factor and 0 non important one. This format was pursued for developing statistical analysis and comparison between the different types of participants. We used the same questions and format for interviewing farmers and stakeholders, although the questionnaire for farmers included also personal aspects like gender, age, and education.</p>
A map of active cropland and short-term fallows across Northern Mozambique derived from PlanetScope data
<p><strong>Overview</strong></p> <p>A map of smallholder-dominated landscapes covering the provinces Niassa, Zambezia, Cabo Delgado, and Nampula in Northern Mozambique. The map includes active cropland and short-term fallows as separate classes, as well as five land cover classes (herbaceous vegetation, open woodlands, closed woodlands, non-vegetated land, water). The map is based on PlanetScope mosaics and consequently comes at 4.77m spatial resolution.</p> <p>The download contains the following files:</p> <ul> <li>ps_lc_nmoz.tif / .qml: land cover map and associated QGIS style file</li> <li>ps_lc_nmoz_probmargins.tif / .qml: probability margins and associated QGIS style file</li> <li>training.gpkg: training samples with class labels</li> <li>LICENSE.pdf: NICFI data program user license</li> </ul> <p><strong>Map accuracy</strong></p> <p>We conducted an area-adjusted accuracy assessment based on a stratified random sample, which yielded important insights regarding accuracies and error types. The area-adjusted overall accuracy of the map is 88.9%, but users should be aware of the most important error types:</p> <ul> <li>Active cropland were overestimated, whereas local topographical depressions with moist soils, and regions with exposed soils/rocks and sparse vegetation cover were found to be falsely classified.</li> <li>Short-term fallows were underestimated, particularly in regions with high growth rates and extensive land management, such as parts of the northern and north-eastern study region.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Further resources</strong></p> <p>The production of this map was made possible through the <a href="https://www.planet.com/nicfi/">NICFI data program</a>, providing the PlanetScope mosaics and the Google Earth Engine cloud computing platform for preprocessing of the satellite data and classification. As such, the use of the map falls under the <a href="https://assets.planet.com/docs/Planet_ParticipantLicenseAgreement_NICFI.pdf">NICFI data program license agreement</a> included in the download. Chacma baboon male-male greeting dataset, Gorongosa National Park, Mozambique
<p><em><strong>See README file for more complete information</strong></em></p> <p><strong>Overview: </strong>This dataset provides presence/absence data for each of 55 observations from Gorongosa National Park. Each observation is one male-male greeting. Data was first collected using BORIS (Friard and Gamba, 2016) following an ethogram (DOI:10.5281/zenodo.7314291), then cleaned using Python version 3.8.5 and R version 4.3.1 to format as a presence/absence matrix. Some of these observations (with observation IDs ending in "_greet[xx]" also appear in the more general approach dataset found under the following DOI 10.5281/zenodo.10339023.
