Fusion of Underwater Camera and Multibeam Sonar for Diver Detection and Tracking

Bathymetry from multibeam data collected on the RV Heincke, cruises HE-324 and HE-349, North Sea, Helgoland (Germany)
<p>Mosaicked multibeam-derived bathymetry from Simrad EM710 on board RV Heincke collected during Spring 2010 (HE- 324) and 2011 (HE-349). Water depths range from 20 to 50 meters. The range of opening angles of the EM710 multibeam varies between 50 and 65 degrees. EM710 data were used in conjunction with an OCTANS motion sensor, ship’s DGPS and Sound Velocity Profiles (SVP). CRS information: WGS 84 / UTM zone 32N.</p>

<p>Dataset for the study "Can Anthipatella wollastoni be detected in Multibeam Echo Sounder multi-detect data?", currently under review at Frontiers in Remote Sensing.</p> <p> </p> <p>The files include:</p> <p>Photos.zip: GoPro Photos with ground truthing of two ridges with the occurrence of Black Corals. Photos have been geo-located using the coordinates of the onboard Multibeam System and correcting a time offset. Refer to the paper for details.</p> <p>Sound velocities: Sound velocity casts using a Base-X shallow water profiler used to correct the multibeam echo sounder.</p> <p>MD_manual_edit: Shape file including the position of Multi-Detects after the manual cleaning. The MD point objects have been joined with information from the local bathymetry and slope. Note that associated intensity values are erroneous due to a bug in the recording MBES firmware.</p> <p>MBES: Includes Norbit s7k (version 3) raw files of the multibeam echo sounder data (Norbit iwbms-e, Serial number #12). Files in folders with "MD" were used for the Multi-Detect study. Files with "MFE" include multifrequency data. We failed to locate the black corals in multi-frequency backscatter data. Multi-detect data were recorded with a swath width of 100° split into 512 beams. The multifrequency data contains 190 and 370 kHz information. Spreading correction was set to 40, absorption set to 107 dB/km (calculated for the 390 kHz frequency with a mean water temperature of 16°C, a salinity of 35. Actual temperature according to diver information was 24°C at the surface, 23° until 50 m and 21° until 80 m). All offsets have been accounted for during the survey. The data is located using an RTK correction (refer to paper for further details).</p> <p> </p>
Multibeam bathymetry data of RV Sonne cruise SO297, offshore Copiapó, Chile
<p><span>The multibeam bathymetry was acquired with a Kongsberg Simrad EM122 system operating at 12 kHz with a beam width of 1° by 0.5°. The total swath width was set to 130° and high-density equidistant and chirp multi-ping modes were used to obtain a high-sounding density. Most of the multibeam data were acquired with a vessel speed of ~4 kn, with the remainder of the data being acquired at 7-8 kn. Data processing involved a triangulation filter with three iterations, and subsequent manual cleaning of the data. The data were gridded with a cell size of 50 m using a near-neighbor algorithm with a 60 m search radius. </span></p>

Processed multibeam bathymetry data collected around the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal, onboard the NEREIDE research vessel.
<p>A Kongsberg EM 2040 C multibeam echo sounder transducer installed on the scientific vessel NEREIDE, was used to collect multibeam bathymetry data during graduation activities and equipment testing. This particular dataset was collected around the Ria de Aveiro, Portugal during March, 2020.</p> <p>The range of opening angles of the EM 2040 C multibeam varies between 60 and 65 degrees. The positioning system used was supported by the Real Time Kinematic (RTK) technique with the transmission of differential data in Ultra High Frequency (UHF) mode.</p> <p>The data is calibrated and corrected for the surface sound velocity. The processing of hydrographic data was performed using specific algorithms for hydrography - Combined Uncertainty and Bathymetric Estimator (CUBE). In its processing, data was referenced to the hydrographic Zero of Portugal and projected in the WGS84-UTM29N coordinate system.</p>
Data from: Reliability of fish size estimates obtained from a multibeam imaging sonar
Multibeam imaging sonars have considerable potential for use in fisheries surveys because the video-like images are easy to interpret and contain information about fish size, shape, and swimming behavior, as well as characteristics of occupied habitats. We examined images obtained using a DIDSON multibeam sonar for Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus, striped bass Morone saxatilis, white perch M. americana, and channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus of known size (20 - 141 cm) to determine the reliability of length estimates. For ranges up to 11 m, percent measurement error (sonar estimate - total length)/total length X 100 varied by species but was not related to the fish's range or aspect angle (orientation relative to the sonar beam). Least-square mean percent error was significantly different from 0.0 for Atlantic sturgeon (x ̅=-8.34, SE=2.39) and white perch (x ̅=14.48, SE=3.99) but not striped bass (x ̅= 3.71, SE=2.58) or channel catfish (x ̅=3.97, SE=5.16). Underestimating lengths of Atlantic sturgeon may be due to difficulty in detecting the snout or the longer dorsal lobe of the heterocercal tail. White perch was the smallest species tested and it had the largest percent measurement errors (both positive and negative) and the lowest percentage of images classified as good or acceptable. Automated length estimates using Echoview software varied with position in the view-field. Estimates tended to be low at more extreme azimuthal angles (fish's angle off-axis within the view-field) but mean and maximum estimates were highly correlated with total length. Software estimates were also biased by fish images partially outside the view-field and when acoustic crosstalk occurred (when a fish perpendicular to the sonar and at relatively close range is detected in the side lobes of adjacent beams). These sources of bias are apparent when files are processed manually and can be filtered out when producing automated software estimates. Multibeam sonar estimates of fish size should be useful for research and management if these potential sources of bias and imprecision are addressed.
