Long term response of arctic tussock tundra to thermal erosion features: A modeling analysis. Tussock tundra regrowth after a thermal erosion event: Simulation H - increased N and P deposition

The Multiple Element Limitation (MEL) model is used to simulate the recovery of Alaskan arctic tussock tundra to thermal erosion features (TEFs) caused by permafrost thaw and mass wasting. TEFs could be significant to regional carbon (C) and nutrient budgets because permafrost soils contain large stocks of soil organic matter (SOM) and TEFs are expected to become more frequent as climate warms. These simulations deal only with recovery following TEF stabilization and do not address initial losses of C and nutrients during TEF formation. To capture the variability among and within TEFs, we simulate a range of post-stabilization conditions by varying the initial size of SOM pools and nutrient supply rates. This file contains the results for 100 years of tussock tundra recovery after a thermal erosion event. This simulation is of TEF recovery with increased N and P deposition compared to the base simulation. Data is presented for day 250 of each year.

Point-frame measurments from a nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and N+P fertilization experiment at the 2007 Anaktuvuk River, Alaska, USA fire scar during the 2016-2019 growing seasons

This file contains point-frame measurements from a nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and N+P fertilization experiment established in the southern section of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire in 2016 at a severely burned site and an unburned site. Pin-vegetation contact was recorded using a 0.75 m2 frame with 41 evenly spaced pin-drop points. Data was collected once during the height of the growing season in 2016 (when fertilization began) 2017, 2018 and 2019. This data was used to measure the impact of fertilization and fire on community composition.

Leaf area index (LAI) recorded from a nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and N+P fertilization experiment at the 2007 Anaktuvuk River, Alaska, USA fire scar during the 2016-2019 growing seasons

This file contains leaf area index (LAI) measurements from an nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and N+P fertilization experiment established in the southern section of the 2007 Anaktuvuk River fire in 2016. LAI was recorded using a handheld plant canopy analyzer (LI-COR 2200C; LI-COR, Lincoln, NE, USA) Data spans 4 years from 2016 (when fertilization began) until 2019. Data was recorded once a year at the peak of each growing season.

N and P fertilization experiment plant phenology data for South of saddle, 1993-1994

The effects of nitrogen, phosphorus, and nitrogen+phosphorus fertilization on phenology of alpine plants was examined. This was a preliminary study to determine if the phenologies of dry meadow plants were affected by nutrient amendments, and if they were, which species responded most to the treatments. Times of emergence, senescence, and other key vegetative and reproductive "events" were recorded.

Aboveground biomass N and P content data for South of saddle, 1991.

To determine whether there are differences in the relative capacity of communities to accumulate nutrients N and P standing crops were measured following fertilization in two alpine tundra communities. Dry meadow had greater increases in aboveground N standing crop and tissue N concentration in response to N fertilization than the wet meadow. The wet meadow had a greater P accumulation response to P fertilization than the dry meadow.

Sediment, C, N, and P Concentrations and Burial Rates in Three Southwestern Ohio Retention Ponds: 2006-2019

These datasets correspond to Rogers et al (2022) “Temporal patterns in sediment, carbon, and nutrient burial in ponds associated with changing agricultural tillage” published in Biogeochemistry (DOI: 10.1007/s10533-022-00916-w). We sampled three retention ponds in southwest Ohio in 2019 to compare sediment, carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorous burial rates to those calculated in 2006 to see the effect a watershed-wide shift to conservation tillage and to estimate the value of the ecosystem services these ponds provide via sequestration. Two methods were used to calculate burial rates: simple mean and spatially explicit. All datasets use simple mean except for the data set named “Spatially Explicit Sediment C N P Burial in SW OH Retention Ponds 2019”, which uses the spatially explicit method. For more information, please refer to our paper.

Soil C, N, P, and Frankia nifD-K RFLP genotypes distribution from Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession 2005

This dataset contains genetic characterizations of Frankia inhabiting Alnus tenuifolia nodules in early and late succession sites in the Bonanza Creek Experimental Forest (BCEF). Characterizations were done using PCR-RFLP on the nifD-K spacer region of the Frankia genome. The position of each plant and each nodule were mapped in order to examine spatial patterns in Frankia distribution within sites. Soil chemistry data, including C, N, P, and pH, were also collected from mineral and organic layers.
