Post-fire succession in 1994 Hajdukovich Creek burn: Measurements of soil inorganic nitrogen supply (NO3- and NH4+)
This dataset contains soil NO3- and NH4+ supply measurements collected using PRS ion exchange probes. Measurements of inorganic N supply were collected separately in the organic and mineral soil layers. The probes were buried for two time periods (July - August, and August- September) in 2009.
Effects of microarthropod exclusion and water amendments on fluffgrass rhizosphere nitrate (NO3) at the Jornada Basin LTER, 1986-1987
This data package contains data on nitrogen availability (as nitrate, NO3-), measured with ion exchange resin bags, in fluffgrass (Dasyochloa pulchella) rhizosphere soil from 1986-1987. This study was conducted at the Chihuahuan Desert Rangeland Research Center to test how watering, and changing densities of soil microarthropods and nematodes, impacts fluffgrass growth and nutrient cycling. An ion exchange resin bag technique (Binkley 1984, Lajtha 1988) was used to determine nitrate availability. Twenty 6 x 6 m plots were established with a 3 m buffer between plots. Five plots were randomly assigned to one of four treatments:1) Chlordane (to exclude microarthropods), 2) Chlordane and water, 3) Water, and 4) Control. Ten anion exchange bags were placed in the rhizosphere of a fluffgrass plant in each plot. Bags were left in the field 3 months, collected, brought to the lab and analyzed for available nitrate (NO3-) using an automated cadmium reduction procedure. The data table contains bag collection date, treatment, and NO3- (mg/kg) concentration. This study is complete.

Olfaction in the Anthropocene: NO3 negatively impacts floral scent and nocturnal pollination
<p>There is growing concern about sensory pollutants impacting ecological communities. Anthropogenically enhanced oxidants (O3 and NO3) rapidly degrade floral scents, potentially reducing pollinator attraction to flowers. However, the physiological and behavioral impacts on pollinators and plant fitness are unknown. Using a nocturnal flower-moth system, we find that atmospheric concentrations of NO3, but not O3, eliminate flower visitation by moths, and it is the reaction of NO3 to a subset of monoterpenes that reduces the scent's attractiveness. Global atmospheric models of floral scent oxidation reveal that pollinators in certain urban areas may have a reduced ability to perceive and navigate to flowers. These results illustrate the impact of anthropogenic pollutants on an animal's olfactory ability and indicate that such pollutants may be critical regulators of global pollination.</p>

Data from: New insights into carbon acquisition and exchanges within the coral-dinoflagellate symbiosis under NH4+ and NO3- supply
Anthropogenic nutrient enrichment affects the biogeochemical cycles and nutrient stoichiometry of coastal ecosystems and is often associated with coral reef decline. However, the mechanisms by which dissolved inorganic nutrients, and especially nitrogen forms (ammonium versus nitrate) can disturb the association between corals and their symbiotic algae are subject to controversial debate. Here, we investigated the coral response to varying N : P ratios, with nitrate or ammonium as a nitrogen source. We showed significant differences in the carbon acquisition by the symbionts and its allocation within the symbiosis according to nutrient abundance, type and stoichiometry. In particular, under low phosphate concentration (0.05 µM), a 3 µM nitrate enrichment induced a significant decrease in carbon fixation rate and low values of carbon translocation, compared with control conditions (N : P = 0.5 : 0.05), while these processes were significantly enhanced when nitrate was replaced by ammonium. A combined enrichment in ammonium and phosphorus (N : P = 3 : 1) induced a shift in nutrient allocation to the symbionts, at the detriment of the host. Altogether, these results shed light into the effect of nutrient enrichment on reef corals. More broadly, they improve our understanding of the consequences of nutrient loading on reef ecosystems, which is urgently required to refine risk management strategies.
Mont Blanc ice core d15N(NO3-) values
<p>All d15N(NO3-) measurements are gathered along the CDD16 ice core. As noted in previous publications, there are gaps in the age chronology. Consequently, some measurement values are not associated with an age. </p> <p>For the bottommost measurements, because the density profile is less consistent due to ice debris, only the concentrations (in red) are reported, instead of NO3- quantity.</p>
