Overnight Shark River Surveys from Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE), South Florida from October 2001 to March 2002

Estuarine mixing interfaces have been a focus of wetland ecologists for the last three decades and are of growing concern today. Particularly critical in Everglades restoration, water quality and the dynamics of nutrients and dissolved materials across seasons in the natural system are being defined. We measured diurnal and seasonal (wet and dry) variation in microbial, dissolved and total nutrients and total organic carbon along a riverine transect and for a diurnal cycle in October of 2001 and March of 2002. For the diurnal sampling we anchored a houseboat mid Shark River 100m up river of the mesohaline Florida Coastal Everglades Shark River LTER site and sampled the water for chemical, microbial, and physical parameters. At slack high and low tides we sampled 10 miles offshore then at three sites up the Shark River. TOC (mM) and salinity (ppt) were highly correlated (r2 .97) along the river transect across seasons and TOC derived from terrestrial input. Bacterial production ranged from 1.88 to 10.99 mg C l-1 d-1 and was greatest in the dry season and at the most freshwater sampling points. Combined examination of our 49 sampled parameters both from the diurnal sampling and river transect sampling showed that our position for sampling in the river was critical and that the mid river-estuarine productivity maxima occurred within Shark River in both the wet and dry season. These data suggest this oligotrophic estuarine-river system is highly sensitive to watershed and river fringe nutrient inputs and remineralization vectors within the river.

Summertime methane and carbon dioxide emission rates and associated variables from a national-scale survey of 146 reservoirs in the United States, 2016-2023

Reservoirs are globally important sources of greenhouse gases, but the magnitude of their emissions is highly uncertain. Here we present data for 146 reservoirs from two surveys of reservoir methane and carbon dioxide emissions, one at the regional scale in the midwestern United States and one at the national scale in the conterminous United States, plus data from one reservoir in Washington and another in Puerto Rico. At all reservoirs, ebullitive and diffusive emissions and basic physiochemistry were measured at 15-70 locations during one 22 to 64-hour period during the summers of 2016-2023, with four reservoirs revisited a second time. Concomitant water chemistry measurements were also made at an index site. The dataset is comprised of two geospatial files and seven .csv files containing greenhouse gas emissions, water chemistry, morphology, and other relevant data. These data comprise the largest multi-reservoir emissions dataset ever assembled using consistent measurement methods.

Meta-analysis and gender classification of 914 national and international surveys in six European countries (2000-2023)

Long-term trends in pesticide residues and physical chemical parameters of superficial water samples with accompanying macro-benthic invertebrate community surveys from the Palo Verde National Park, Costa Rica: 1993-1994; 2001; 2004-2005; 2009-2011

During the years 1993-1994, 2001, 2003-2005 and 2009-2011, the Central American Institute for Studies on Toxic Substances (IRET-UNA) executed independent research projects which quantified the presence of pesticide residues on superficial water samples from the Palo Verde National Park (PVNP) and surrounding areas. The PVNP (5460 sq km) is a RAMSAR wetland of international importance, which has been subjected to pesticide pressure from agricultural fields (mainly rice and sugarcane) since the 1960s and 1970s. In 1993, the PVNP wetlands were placed on the RAMSAR Montreux Record, indicating that it was considered an “impaired ecosystem” due to ecotoxicology concerns. Water is the key component of all issues regarding the biodiversity, management, restoration, and economic development of this region. Therefore, water quality is a critical component of many social ecological discussions and research efforts. This data package contains uniform pesticide, biological and water quality data from all PVNP wetland projects (1993- 2011) in order to present long-term trends in the environmental water quality and accompanying biological patterns for this conservation area. Study sites were spatially determined to compare clean upstream waters with a gradient of pesticide-affected waters. Superficial water samples were collected at various sites for chemical (pesticide) analysis and water quality parameters were recorded in situ for environmental monitoring. Corresponding biological sampling was completed to survey benthic macroinvertebrate communities and compare with local eco-toxicological profiles. This data package contains information from four separate projects.

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This data set contains records for the numbers of selected groups of ground-dwelling arthropod species and individuals collected from pitfall traps at 4 sites on the Sevilleta NWR, including creotostebush shrubland, both black and blue grama grasslands, and a pinyon/juniper woodland. Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

Shipboard Conductivity–Temperature–Depth (CTD) and dissolved oxygen profile data collected during hypoxia surveys along six hydrographic sampling lines within Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, 2004–2015

<p>This data set includes Conductivity-Temperature-Depth (CTD) and dissolved oxygen profile data that were collected along Washington State&rsquo;s outer coast within Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary (OCNMS). Measurements were made along six cross-shelf hydrographic sampling lines during a series of hypoxia survey cruises from 2004 &ndash; 2015. The 398 CTD profiles were acquired using Sea-Bird Scientific 19 SeaCAT or 19plus SeaCAT CTD profilers with associated SBE-43 (Sea-Bird Electronics) or Beckman or YSI-type (Yellow Springs Instruments) dissolved oxygen sensors. The data were processed via Sea-Bird Scientific&rsquo;s SBE Data Processing application using six of the modules in the following order: Data Conversion, Filter, Align CTD, Loop Edit, Derive, and Bin Average. Health of the Nation. National NCD risk factor survey, Barbados (2012-13)

<p><strong>Executive Summary</strong></p> <div> <div>The Caribbean is experiencing increasing levels of illness and death from non-communicable disease (NCD) causes. Regional leaders pledged to combat this epidemic through increased surveillance and intervention, implementing healthcare policies and programmes across our countries. In Barbados, one of the Ministry of Health (MoH)&rsquo;s initiatives has been the Health of the Nation (HotN) Survey, to provide information on the prevalence and social determinants of risk factors for lifestyle-related NCD. This will allow identification of potential targets for future interventions to improve prevention and control of these diseases in the Barbadian population. In this comprehensive, cross-sectional survey, data were collected for 1234 participants aged at least 25 years (response rate: 55%) on demographics, behavioural risk factors, medical history, place of treatment and costs incurred, blood pressure and anthropometry, and biochemical measures. The survey sample under-represented young adults (particularly men) and over-represented the elderly (particularly women), so a weighting scheme was utilised to balance the sample distribution for age and sex with that of the Barbados 2010 Census. Prevalence of each risk factor was estimated overall, for each sex separately, and stratified by three broad age-groups.</div> <br> <div>Main findings show that Barbadian adults are at high risk from NCDs due to high prevalence of biological and behavioural risk factors. Most alarming is that two in every three adults in our population (and three-quarters of women) are overweight and/or obese. In addition, more than one in three adults in Barbados (more than one in two of those aged at least 45 years) are hypertensive, and one in five have diabetes (almost one in two of those aged 65 years or older). At least one in three of those with known hypertension or diabetes who were receiving treatment had sub-optimal control.&nbsp;</div> <br> <div>Daily tobacco use was reported by one in 10 men, vs one in 50 women. Harmful alcohol use followed a similar pattern, i.e. was mainly reported by young men, with excessive weekly alcohol consumption over the past 30 days reported by roughly the same proportions of men and women reporting daily tobacco use. One in three men aged 25&ndash;44 years reported binge drinking in the past 30 days. Core survey results show that Barbadian residents have low fruit and vegetable consumption, while half of the sample reported low levels of physical activity. About one in four adults had healthcare insurance (one in three of those who were employed). More in-depth information on diet, physical activity and cost/insurance will be provided from the relevant survey sub-studies at a later date. Urgent action is required to address the low levels of healthy behavioural risk and high levels of biological risk present in the Barbadian adult population. Community and civil society involvement could help support healthier behaviours. A multi-sectoral approach is required to combat NCD risk on all levels, with creation of national guidelines to supplement an appropriate regulatory framework within an enabling environment.</div> </div>

The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: This data set contains records for the numbers of selected groups of ground-dwelling arthropod species and individuals collected from pitfall traps at 4 sites on the Sevilleta NWR, including creotostebush shrubland, both black and blue grama grasslands, and a pinyon/juniper woodland. Data collections begin in May of 1989, and are represented by subsequent sample collections every 2 months. One site (Goat Draw/Cerro Montosa) was discontinued in 2001, and a new site (Blue Grama) was initiated . Only three sites, creosotebush, black grama, and blue grama were continued between 2001-2004.

Permafrost thaw monitoring in Denali National Park: Thermokarst transect surveys 2013-2023

This dataset contains variables measured at thawed, ice-rich permafrost sites in Denali National Park and Preserve. Transects were established at seven sites in the Toklat river basin in 2013 to understand how ecosystem characteristics changed following permafrost thaw. Transects were co-located with known thaw subsidence (thermokarst) or erosional features and run from outside (relatively undisturbed tundra) through the feature. These data represent a long-term monitoring project of permafrost and ecosystem characteristics, surveyed initially in 2013 and re-surveyed 10 years later in 2023.

Field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states in a non-tidal, salinizing peat marsh in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, June 2018 - ongoing

This dataset package details a field survey and long-term measurements of biological, geomorphic, and hydrologic properties across ecosystem states found within a salinizing, non-tidal peat marsh in the coastal Everglades. There are four datasets included: FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_HydroGeo includes point measurements of soil surface elevation, bedrock elevation, soil depth, water depth, and porewater salinity across ecosystem states: emergent marsh (sawgrass dominated), submerged marsh (submerged aquatic vegetation), and unvegetated open water. The survey was conducted between November 2019 to January 2020. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio contains plot-scale (1 m^2) biological measurements from emergent marsh (sawgrass). Biological measurements (total sawgrass, average individual sawgrass biomass, and total sawgrass aboveground biomass), are inherently plot-level but geomorphic and hydrologic measurements were averaged (n = 3) for each plot. Standard deviations are provided. FCE1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio_LongTerm contains biological plot-scale (1 m^2) measurements at a bi-monthly timestep from Nov 2019 - July 2022 from a subset of plots (n = 9) included in the FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_Bio dataset. Each bi-monthly measurement is the average value across all 9 nine plots. Standard deviations are also included. FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH contains long-term measurements of soil surface elevation change and vertical accretion from surface elevation change and marker horizon plots from June 2018 - May 2023. Average and standard errors across all plots are included as well as measurements from each plot. Also included is the cumulative number of dry days based on the average soil surface elevation for all plots. Data collection for all datasets is complete, except for FCE_1250_Lamb_AltStableState_SETMH. SET-MH measurements are still ongoing.

Field survey of mangrove regeneration, porewater variables, and light in mangrove forests in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA, July 2020 - August 2022

This dataset package encompasses measurements from field surveys of mangrove regeneration, porewater variables, and light conditions across six mangrove sites in the coastal Everglades. The goal of this project was to quantify mangrove regeneration of seedlings and saplings in mid- and downstream locations within three estuaries in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA. We assessed the effects of porewater variables and light conditions on the observed regeneration patterns. The package includes seven datasets: FCE1268_Porewater: Contains measurements of porewater salinity, sulfide, ammonia, nitrite, orthophosphate, and nitrate at a 30 cm depth. Porewater surveys were conducted biannually from 09-10-2020 to 05-17-2022. See also similar porewater data for Florida Coastal Everglades (FCE) long-term sites in data packages knb-lter-fce.1169 and knb-lter-fce.1171, which contain data for SRS-5 and SRS-6, available in the FCE LTER website's data catalog or the EDI repository. FCE1268_Foliar_Nutrient_Content dataset, collected in August 2022, includes measurements of foliar nutrient content (total carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus) for three mangrove species (A. germinans, L. racemosa, R. mangle) of two life stages—seedlings (height < 1 m) and saplings (height ≥ 1 m and Diameter at Breast Height (DBH) < 2.5 cm). FCE1268_Light contains light intensity (foot-candle) measurements taken at 1-hour intervals from 09-18-2020 to 08-29-2022 at mangrove sites and converted photosynthetic active radiation values from an outdoor mesocosm experiment. FCE1268_Sapling_Density provides biannual count measurements of individuals at the sapling plot level (4 m^-2) within each site from 07-09-2020 to 08-29-2022. FCE1268_Seedling_Density contains biannual count measurements of individuals at the seedling plot level (m^-2) within each site from 07-07-2020 to 08-29-2022.
