Residential exposure to natural hazards in Europe, 2000–2020
<p>This dataset provides average national-level current gross replacement costs of the stock of residential assets (buildings and household contents) per m<sup>2</sup> of useful floor space. The dataset includes annual time series (2000–2020) for 33 European countries, in nominal and real prices. It is intended for application in microscale disaster models by enabling approximation of the monetary value of individual buildings exposed to hazards, especially floods, for which damage functions often distinguish between vulnerability of the building structure and contents inside.</p>

Determination of Natural Radioactivity Levels and Associated Radiation Hazard Indices of Wheat Flour Samples From Selected Ethiopian Markets.
<p>Wheat flour is a nutrient-dense food that is commonly consumed by various age groups in Ethiopia. In this study, natural radioactivity levels of <sup>226</sup>Ra, <sup>232</sup>Th, and <sup>40</sup>K, as well as the related dangerous radiological characteristics, were successfully measured on 10 different brands of wheat flour samples using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. Average activity concentrations of <sup>226</sup>Ra, <sup>232</sup>Th, and <sup>40</sup>K in wheat flour are found to be 0.26<strong> ±</strong>0.07 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, 1.54<strong> ± </strong>0.43 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, and 59.79<strong>±</strong>3.65 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Moreover, the average values of the corresponding radiological parameters, Ra<sub>eq</sub>, H<sub>int</sub>, and annual effective dose (E<sub>ave</sub>) (sum), were also found to be 7.07±0.96 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, 0.019±0.003, and 0.109±0.019 mSvy<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. When the obtained results for all of the samples were compared to the internationally accepted norms, they were found to be below the permissible world average values. Furthermore, the lifetime cancer risk was discovered to be substantially below the permissible limit. According to the study, the risk of absorbing natural radionuclides from wheat flour consumption is negligible. The findings can be used to develop radiation protection rules and regulations for the use of wheat flour in food production and processing.</p>
Assessment of Natural Radioactivity Levels and Estimation of Radiological Hazards in Building Materials Commonly Used in Ethiopian Constructions.
<p>Natural radionuclide activity concentrations were measured in ceramic, gypsum, and brick samples from manufacturers, dealers, and construction sites in and around Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, using an HPGe detector. The study's main objectives were to assess the building material activity and health impacts. Average activity concentrations (Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>) for <sup>226</sup>Ra in ceramic, gypsum, and brick samples were obtained as 81.19 ± 1.88, 1.34 ± 0.17, and 39.83 ± 1.21, respectively. Respective values of <sup>232</sup>Th were obtained as 166.12 ± 4.20, 0.68 ± 0.18, and 103.71 ± 3.29 and concentrations of <sup>40</sup>K were found to be 755.06 ± 16.10,15.42 ± 1.97, and 921.22 ± 24.90, respectively. Some of the materials that were tested, especially the ceramic sample, had slightly higher concentrations of radionuclides. In all samples except ceramic, Ra<sub>eq </sub>was < 370 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, which is the recommended limiting dose for bulk medium. Furthermore, the corresponding radiological parameters, absorbed dose, annual effective dose equivalent, excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), internal (H<sub>in</sub>) and external (H<sub>ex</sub>) hazard indexes, gamma index (Iγ), and alpha index (Iα) were determined. The ELCR average values in this study are slightly higher than the global average, and the indoor and outdoor absorbed dose rates are greater than the limiting criteria of 84 and 59 nGyh<sup>-1</sup>. Therefore, especially for ceramic samples, it is important to assess their radiation potential and should be utilized in a controlled manner to decrease gamma exposure to inhabitants. Finally, the computed data could be used as a baseline to look at any radiological contamination caused by construction materials in the future.</p>
A global map of species at risk of extinction due to natural hazards
<p>An often-overlooked question of the biodiversity crisis is how natural hazards contribute to species extinction risk. To address this issue, we explored how four natural hazards: earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, overlapped with the distribution ranges of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles that have either narrow distributions or populations with few mature individuals. To assess which species are at risk from these natural hazards, we combined the frequency and magnitude of each natural hazard to estimate a probability of impact. We considered species at risk if they overlapped with regions where any of the four natural hazards historically occurred (n = 3,722). Those species with at least a quarter of their range subjected to a high probability of impact were considered at high risk (n = 2,001) of extinction due to natural hazards. In total, 834 reptiles, 617 amphibians, 302 birds, and 248 mammals were at high risk and they were mainly distributed on islands and in the tropics. Hurricanes (n = 983) and earthquakes (n = 868) affected the most species, while tsunamis (n = 272), and volcanoes (n = 171) affected considerably fewer. The region with the highest number of species at high risk was the Pacific Ring of Fire, especially due to volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis, while hurricane-related high-risk species were concentrated in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and northwestern Pacific Ocean. Our study provides important information regarding the species at risk due to natural hazards and can help guide conservation attention and efforts to safeguard their survival.</p>

Measurements of natural radioactivity levels and associated radiation hazard indices in Moringa plant leaf samples from selected areas in southern Ethiopia.
<p>Moringa stenopetala (MS) is a multipurpose tree whose leaf is consumed by people of all ages in southern Ethiopia. In this study, natural radioactivity levels of <sup>226</sup>Ra, <sup>232</sup>Th, and <sup>40</sup>K, as well as the related dangerous radiological characteristics, were measured on different sites of moringa samples using high-purity germanium (HPGe) gamma-ray spectrometry. Average activity concentrations of <sup>226</sup>Ra, <sup>232</sup>Th, and <sup>40</sup>K in moringa leaves are found to be 0.49 ± 0.12, 3.84 ± 1.12, and 573.29 ± 26.79 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. Moreover, the average values of the corresponding radiological parameters, Ra<sub>eq</sub>, H<sub>int</sub>, and annual effective dose (E<sub>ave</sub>) (sum), were also found to be 50.13 ± 3.79 Bq.kg<sup>-1</sup>, 0.136 ± 0.010, and 0.238 ± 0.089 mSvy<sup>-1</sup>, respectively. When the obtained results for all of the samples were compared to globally accepted criteria, they were discovered to be lower than the allowable world average levels. Furthermore, the lifetime cancer risk was revealed to be far lower than the allowable limit. According to the study, the risk of absorbing natural radionuclides from moringa leaf ingestion is insignificant. The findings can be utilized to create radiation safety norms and regulations for the use of moringa leaves as food and medication.</p>
Measurements of Natural Radioactivity and Radiological Hazards Assessment in Some Commercial Ceramic Tiles used in Ethiopia.
<p>Ceramic tile is a widely used decorative building material. The natural radionuclideconcentration ( 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K) of ceramic wall and floor tiles typically used in Ethiopia was determined using an HPG detector. The study&#39;s goals are to determine the activity concentration of ceramic tiles as well as evaluate their health-related effects. The average activity concentrations of 226 Ra, 232 Th, and 40 K were 68.06 ± 2.07 Bq kg -1 , 131.19 ± 3.82 Bq kg -1 , and 802.04 ± 23.41 Bq kg -1 , respectively, which was found to be greater than the global mean. The calculated average value of Raeq was &lt; 370 Bq kg -1 , which is the limiting dose recommended for bulk medium. In addition, the related radiological hazard metrics, such as absorbed dose, annual effective dose equivalent, excess lifetime cancer risk (ELCR), internal (H in ) and external (H ex ) hazard indexes, gamma index (I γ ), and alpha index (I α ), were determined. The findings were contrasted with regional, global,and national legal frameworks as well as other similar studies&#39; findings. According to the results, using the examined ceramic tiles in buildings does not significantly increase radiation exposure.</p>

Data from: Natural hazards and wildlife health: the effects of a volcanic eruption on the Andean condor
<p>Volcanic eruptions produce health changes in animals that may be associated with emitted gases and deposited ashes. We evaluated whether the Puyehue–Cordón Caulle volcanic eruption in 2011 produced health changes in the threatened Andean condor (<i>Vultur gryphus</i>) living in the area most affected by the eruption, north-western Patagonia. We studied clinical and biochemical parameters of condors examined before and after the eruption. We also examined concentrations of different metals and metalloids in the blood of individuals sampled after the eruption. The most common clinical abnormality associated with the eruptive process was irritating pharyngitis. In condors sampled after the eruption, blood concentrations of albumin, calcium, carotenoids and total proteins decreased to levels under the reference values reported for this species. We found different chemical elements in the blood of these condors after the eruption, such as arsenic and cadmium, with the potential to produce health impacts. Thus, the health of Andean condors was affected in different ways by the eruption; remaining in the affected area appears to have been costly. However, in comparison to other animal species, the health impacts were not as strong and were mainly related to food shortages due to the decrease in availability of livestock carcasses linked to the eruption. This suggests that condors dealt relatively well with this massive event. Future research is needed to evaluate if the health changes we found reduce the survival of this species, and if the cost of inhabiting volcanic areas has any ecological or evolutionary influence on the condor's life history.</p>
