SBC LTER: Ocean: Time-series: nearshore calibrated pH and temperature outside of reefs, ongoing since 2011
Calibrated pH (Total scale, SeaFET sensor) data was collected from 10 reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel along with in situ temperature. Most pH sensors are deployed together with SBC long-term mooring instruments. Data collection intervals and SeaFET sensor depths vary based on the site location.
SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean Currents and Biogeochemistry: Nearshore water profiles (monthly CTD and chemistry), ongoing since 2000
This data package contains water chemistry measurements taken monthly at these reefs in the nearshore areas of the Santa Barbra Channel, CA, USA: Arroyo Quemado, Bullito, Naples, Arroyo Burro, Mohawk and Carpinteria. Measurements include standard CTD parameters, nutrients, pigments, particulate CN, total dissolved N and P, stable isotopes of C and N (not all parameters are measured at all stations). Sampling began in November 2000. Some stations are sampled only occasionally. During the first 2 years, CTD data were collected with a SBE19 Seacat Profiler and water samples with a pump. Starting in February 2003, a SBE19-Plus with a rosette sampler was used. There are 3 tables in this dataset. Water chemistry and profiles from "registered stations" (see geographic coverage) are in 2 tables with "registered" in their name. CTD profiles are often collected ad hoc, or as "stations of opportunity". These have been collected in a third table as "non-registered". The station codes for these may be reused, and are not recorded in metadata (but can be found in data).
SBC LTER: Ocean: Ocean hourly temperature at nearshore locations along the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel, ongoing since 2000
Ocean in-situ temperature data were collected at nearshore sites along the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel. The earliest temperature records started in April 2000. The temporal coverage varies at each site. At the start of the temperature data collection, the tidbit or hobo sensors were deployed on a mooring line at approximate 3 m, 9m, and 14 m nominal depths, and the sampling interval is 2 minutes. In 2013, the 3 m and 9 m temperature sensors were terminated and only 14 m sensors continued. In addition, the sampling interval changed to 15 minutes. This data package presents hourly average in-situ temperature data. The original raw data (2-min interval) between 2000-2010 were published on DataOne https://search.dataone.org/portals/PISCO. Data can be viewed and accessed by zooming in the Northern Channel Islands in the Santa Barbara Channel region and searching the keyword "physical oceanography moored temperature data". These datasets were funded and managed by The Partnership for Interdisciplinary Studies of Coastal Oceans (PISCO). In 2013, the maintenance of the sensor deployment was transferred to NOAA National Marine Sanctuaries, and Santa Barbara Coastal LTER has been responsible for data download and processing.

Dissolved oxygen (miniDOT sensors) data was collected from 6 reefs in the Santa Barbara Channel along with in situ temperature. Most dissolved oxygen sensors are deployed together with SBC long-term mooring instruments. Data collection intervals and miniDOT sensor depths vary based on the site location.

SBC LTER: Ocean: Diel nearshore water profiles (CTD and chemistry) during stratified conditions
These data describe diel fluctuations in nutrient and physical measurements observed in the nearshore region of the Santa Barbara Channel (Goleta Bay) during the summer of 2018. Sampling took place over three, 36-hour campaigns in August 2018 and encompasses neap, midway, and spring tide conditions. Data are contained in two tables: 1) a time series of physical measurements (temperature, salinity, etc.) measured over time at three different depths, 2) a time series of chemical and biological measurements (ammonium, chlorophyll a, etc.) measured over time at three different depths.
Microsatellite data from: Multiple colonizations and genetic differentiation from the mainland populations in insular populations of the perennial herb Solidago virgaurea complex (Asteraceae) on recently formed nearshore oceanic islands
<p><b>Aim: </b>Although the evolution of island endemic plants has long been investigated, the majority of such studies have focused on species with remarkable levels of morphological variation and on islands substantially far from the mainland. Except for a few examples such as the Canary Islands, endemic plants on nearshore oceanic islands have received less attention. In this study, we examined the <i>Solidago virgaurea </i>complex on the Japanese mainland Honshu and the adjacent Izu Islands to investigate the population genetic structure and dynamics in plants endemic to nearshore and recently formed oceanic islands.</p> <p><b>Location: </b>Japanese mainland Honshu and the adjacent Izu Islands</p> <p><b>Taxon: </b><i>Solidago virgaurea</i> (Asteraceae)</p> <p><b>Methods: </b>Sixteen and nine populations of <i>S. virgaurea</i> complex were sampled from the mainland and islands, respectively; phylogeographic and population genetics analyses were performed using plastid DNA and nuclear microsatellite DNA variations.</p> <p><b>Results: </b>Phylogenetically close plastid DNA haplotypes were shared between the mainland and islands, although the populations of <i>S. virgaurea</i> from different islands tended to exhibit phylogenetically distinct haplotypes. Admixture analyses based on nuclear DNA variations revealed distinct genetic structures between the mainland and island populations. Gene flow among islands is restricted but may partially offset genetic drift on each island.</p> <p><b>Main conclusions: </b>The genetic structure observed in this study may not have originated from a single dispersal event and successive expansion but rather from at least three colonization events and subsequent gene flow among island populations. Based on the nuclear DNA variations, the Izu Island populations of <i>S. virgaurea</i> are genetically distinct from the mainland ones. Repeated colonization events may have provided sufficient genetic diversity, which would generally be susceptible to founder effects and exert a driving force for evolutionary adaptation, to these oceanic island populations.</p>
