Nosemosis negatively affects honeybee survival: experimental and meta-analytic evidence

<p><span>Nosemosis, caused by microsporidian parasites of the genus <em>Nosema</em>, is considered a significant health concern for insect pollinators, including the economically important honeybee (<em>Apis mellifera</em>). Despite its acknowledged importance, the impact of this disease on honeybee survivorship remains unclear. Here, a standard laboratory cage trial was used to compare mortality rates between healthy and <em>Nosema</em>-infected honeybees. Additionally, a systematic review and meta-analysis of existing literature were conducted to explore how nosemosis contributes to increased mortality in honeybees tested under standard conditions. The review and meta-analysis included 50 studies that reported relevant experiments involving healthy and <em>Nosema</em>-infected individuals. Studies lacking survivorship curves or information on potential moderators, such as spore inoculation dose, age of inoculated bees, or factors that may impact energy expenditure, were excluded. Both the experimental results and meta-analysis revealed a consistent, robust effect of infection, indicating a threefold increase in mortality among the infected group of honeybee workers (hazard ratio for infected individuals = 3.16 [1.97, 5.07] and 2.99 [2.36, 3.79] in the experiment and meta-analysis, respectively). However, the meta-analysis also indicated high heterogeneity in the effect magnitude, which was not explained by our moderators. Furthermore, there was a serious risk of bias within studies and potential publication bias across studies. The findings underscore knowledge gaps in the literature. It is stressed that laboratory cage trials should be viewed as an initial step in evaluating the impact of <em>Nosema</em> on mortality and that complementary field and apiary studies are essential for identifying effective treatments to preserve honeybee populations.</span></p>

A neural substrate for negative affect dictates female parental behavior

<p>Parental behaviors secure the well-being of newborns and concomitantly limit negative affective states in adults, which emerge when coping with neonatal distress becomes challenging. Whether negative-affect-related neuronal circuits orchestrate parental actions is unknown. Here, we identify parental signatures in lateral habenula neurons receiving bed nucleus of stria terminalis innervation (<sup>BNST</sup>LHb). We find that LHb neurons of virgin female mice increase their activity following pup distress vocalization and are necessary for pup-call-driven aversive behaviors. LHb activity rises during pup retrieval, a behavior worsened by LHb inactivation. Intersectional cell identification and transcriptional profiling associate&nbsp;<sup>BNST</sup>LHb cells to parenting and outline a gene expression in female virgins similar to that in mothers but different from that in non-parental virgin male mice. Finally, tracking and manipulating&nbsp;<sup>BNST</sup>LHb cell activity demonstrates their specificity for encoding negative affect and pup retrieval. Thus, a negative affect neural circuit processes newborn distress signals and may limit them by guiding female parenting.</p>

Data from: Warm temperatures during cold season can negatively affect adult survival in an alpine bird

<p>Climate seasonality is a predominant constraint on the lifecycles of species in alpine and polar biomes. Assessing the response of these species to climate change thus requires taking into account seasonal constraints on populations. However interactions between seasonality, weather fluctuations, and population parameters remain poorly explored as they require long-term studies with high sampling frequency. This study investigated the influence of environmental covariates on the demography of a corvid species, the alpine chough Pyrrhocorax graculus, in the highly seasonal environment of the Mont Blanc region. In two steps, we estimated: 1) the seasonal survival of categories of individuals based on their age, sex, etc., 2) the effect of environmental covariates on seasonal survival. We hypothesized that the cold season – and more specifically, the end of the cold season (spring) – would be a critical period for individuals, and we expected that weather and individual covariates would influence survival variation during critical periods. We found that while spring was a critical season for adult female survival, it was not for males. This is likely because females are dominated by males at feeding sites during snowy seasons (winter and spring), and additionally must invest energy in egg production. When conditions were not favourable, which seemed to happen when the cold season was warmer than usual, females probably reached their physiological limits. Surprisingly, adult survival was higher at the beginning of the cold season than in summer, which may result from adaptation to harsh weather in alpine and polar vertebrates. This hypothesis could be confirmed by testing it with larger sets of populations. This first seasonal analysis of individual survival over the full life cycle in a sedentary alpine bird shows that including seasonality in demographic investigations is crucial to better understand the potential impacts of climate change on cold ecosystems.</p>

Data from: Combined effect of anthropogenic noise and artificial night lighting negatively affect Western Bluebird chick development

<p>Sensory pollutants such as anthropogenic noise and night lighting now expose much of the world to evolutionarily novel sound and night lighting conditions. An emerging body of literature has reported a variety of deleterious effects caused by these stimuli, spanning behavioral, physiological, population and community-level responses. However, the combined influence of noise and light has received almost no attention despite the co-occurrence of these stimuli in many landscapes. Here we evaluated the singular and combined effects of these stimuli on Western Bluebird (<i>Sialia mexicana</i>) reproductive success using a field-based manipulation. Nests exposed to noise and light together experienced less predation than control and light-exposed nests, and noise-exposed nests experienced less predation than control nests, yet overall nest success was only higher in noise-exposed nests compared to light-exposed nests. Although exposure to light decreased nestling body condition and evidence was mixed for the singular effects of noise or light on nestling size, those nestlings exposed to noise and light together were smaller across several metrics than nestlings in control nests. Our results support previous research on the singular effects of either stimuli, including potential benefits, such as reduced nest predation with noise exposure. However, our results also suggest that noise and light together can negatively affect some aspects of reproduction more strongly than either sensory pollutant alone. This finding is especially important given that these stimuli tend to covary and are projected to increase dramatically in the next several decades.</p>

Heatwave-mediated decreases in phytoplankton quality negatively affect zooplankton productivity

<ol> <li>Climate change is expected to increase the frequency of extreme temperature events. The effect of heatwaves on phytoplankton is of particular concern because they are a key source of C, N, P, and essential fatty acids to aquatic ecosystems. Laboratory studies have demonstrated that phytoplankton grown at warmer temperatures are a lower-quality food source, but how heatwaves affect phytoplankton quality at the community scale is currently unclear.</li> <li>Here we address this knowledge gap by growing natural assemblages of freshwater phytoplankton at 'ambient', 'constant warming', or 'heatwave' conditions. We next fed these phytoplankton communities to natural assemblages of zooplankton to test the prediction that zooplankton that consume heatwave-exposed phytoplankton will exhibit reductions in biomass.</li> <li>Our experiment demonstrated that zooplankton that consumed 'heatwave' phytoplankton attained lower community biomass than those fed 'constant warming' or 'ambient' phytoplankton. Additionally, despite receiving similar total heat input, phytoplankton exposed to 'heatwave' conditions contained lower C, N, P, and fatty acid concentrations compare to phytoplankton grown in 'constant warming' conditions.</li> <li>Correlations between zooplankton biomass and all measured phytoplankton traits revealed that decreases in zooplankton biomass were best explained by low quantities of C, N, and monounsaturated fatty acids in 'heatwave' phytoplankton.</li> <li>Our study demonstrates that the effects of heatwaves on phytoplankton quality are clearly distinct from those caused by constant warming temperatures, and that heatwave-mediated decreases in resource quality have immediate effects on consumer productivity. </li> </ol>

An invasive seagrass drives its own success in two invaded seas by both negatively affecting native seagrasses and benefiting from those costs

<p>The nature and strength of interactions between native and invasive species can determine invasion success. Species interactions can drive, prevent or facilitate invasion, making understanding the nature and outcome of these interactions critical. We conducted mesocosm experiments to test the outcome of interactions between <em>Halophila</em> <em>stipulacea</em>, a seagrass that invaded the Mediterranean and Caribbean Seas, and native seagrasses (<em>Cymodocea</em> <em>nodosa</em> and <em>Syringodium</em> <em>filiforme</em>, respectively) to elucidate mechanisms explaining the successful invasions. Mesocosms contained intact cores with species grown either mixed or alone. Overall, in both locations, there was a pattern of the invasive growing faster with the native than when alone, while also negatively affecting the native, with similar patterns for shoot density, aboveground and belowground biomass. In the Caribbean, <em>H. stipulacea</em> increased by 5.6 ± 1.0 SE shoots in 6 weeks when grown with the native while, when alone, there was a net loss of −0.8 ± 1.6 SE shoots. The opposite pattern occurred for <em>S. filiforme</em>, although these differences were not significant. While the pattern in the Mediterranean was the same as the Caribbean, with the invasive grown with the native increasing shoots more than when it grew alone, these differences for shoots were not significant. However, when measured as aboveground biomass, <em>H</em>. <em>stipulacea</em> had negative effects on the native <em>C. nodosa</em>. Our results suggest that a seagrass that invaded two seas may drive its own success by both negatively affecting native seagrasses and benefiting from that negative interaction. This is a novel example of a native seagrass species facilitating the success of an invasive at its own cost, providing one possible mechanism for the widespread success of this invasive species.</p>

<p># Abstract</p> <p>Parental behaviours are essential to secure survival and wellbeing of newborns. Concomitantly, parenting also limits negative affective states in adults, which emerge when the coping with neonatal distress becomes a challenge. Whether neural circuits that process negative affect orchestrate components of parental behaviours remains, however, unknown. Here, we identify functional and transcriptional signatures of parental behaviours in neurons of the negative emotion center lateral habenula receiving bed nucleus of the stria terminalis innervation (BNSTLHb). Calcium imaging and optogenetic manipulations reveal that LHb neurons of virgin female mice increase their activity in response to pup distress vocalization and are necessary for pup calls-driven aversive behaviours. Accordingly, LHb activity rises during the retrieval of a pup to a nest, a behaviour worsened by optogenetic LHb inactivation. Intersectional cell identification and transcriptional profiling associates the BNSTLHb neuronal population to parental behaviours and outlines gene expression in female virgins that is similar to mothers but divergent from non-parental virgin male mice. Accordingly, optogenetic activation and inactivation of the BNST-LHb pathway maximizes and suppresses, respectively, the parental behaviour. Finally, tracking and manipulating single BNSTLHb cell activity demonstrates specificity of this neuronal subset for encoding negative affect and pup retrieval, but not sociability amongst conspecifics. Transition to organic farming negatively affects bat activity

<ol> <li>The effectiveness of organic farming on biodiversity has been widely documented especially for plants, arthropods and birds; however, the effects of the transition period required to become an organic farm on wildlife remain poorly understood.</li> <li>We assessed the effects of organic farming on insectivorous bats in citrus orchards in the Republic of Cyprus employing two matched designs (conventional vs. 3-years organic-transitional and conventional vs. organic-certified) and a third unmatched design (3-years organic-transitional vs. organic-certified). We specifically investigated whether the transition period prior to full organic certification influenced bat activity with a special focus on any moderation effects from surrounding semi-natural areas.</li> <li>The activity of three (<em>Pipistrellus kuhlii, Hypsugo savii </em>and Miniopterus<em> schreibersii</em>) of four bat species was significantly lower in farms undergoing the transitional period than in conventional farms, and <em>P. kuhlii </em>and<em> H. savii </em>were significantly less active in organic transitional farming systems that in organic-certified ones. Furthermore, the activity of the most dominant species (<em>P. kuhlii</em>) was significantly higher on organic than transitional and conventional citrus orchards, thus suggesting a time-lag effect. Landscape complexity measured as the amount of semi-natural areas did not moderate the effects of farming system for any study species.</li> <li> <em>Synthesis and application</em>. The transition to organic farming had persistent detrimental effects on bats and potentially on the pest suppression services they provide. Future agri-environmental policy should consider the transition period and implement measures to mitigate any negative effects on biodiversity, alongside promoting asynchronous transition of nearby farms. Our findings further highlight the crucial need to consider the time since transition to organic farming when assessing potential benefits of organic management on biodiversity.</li> </ol>

Historical racial redlining and contemporary patterns of income inequality negatively affect birds, their habitat, and people in Los Angeles, California

<p>The Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC) was a U.S. government-sponsored program initiated in the 1930s to evaluate mortgage lending risk. The program resulted in hand-drawn 'security risk' maps intended to grade sections of cities where investment should be focused (greenlined areas) or limited (redlined zones). The security maps have since been widely criticized as being inherently racist and have been associated with high levels of segregation and lower levels of green amenities in cities across the country. Our goal was to explore the potential legacy effects of the HOLC grading practice on birds, their habitat, and the people who may experience them throughout a metropolis where the security risk maps were widely applied, Greater Los Angeles, California (L.A.). We used ground-collected, remotely sensed, and census data and descriptive and predictive modeling approaches to address our goal. Patterns of bird habitat and avian communities strongly aligned with the luxury-effect phenomenon, where green amenities were more robust, and bird communities were more diverse and abundant in the wealthiest parts of L.A. Our analysis also revealed potential legacy effects from the HOLC grading practice. Associations between bird habitat features and avian communities in redlined and greenlined zones were generally stronger than in areas of L.A. that did not experience the HOLC grading, in part because redlined zones, which included some of the poorest locations of L.A., had the highest levels of dense urban conditions, e.g., impervious surface cover. In contrast, greenlined zones, which included some of the city's wealthiest areas, had the highest levels of green amenities, e.g., tree canopy cover. The White population of L.A., which constitutes the highest percentage of a racial or ethnic group in greenlined areas, was aligned with a considerably greater abundance of birds affiliated with natural habitat features (e.g., trees and shrubs). Conversely, the Hispanic or Latino population, which is dominant in redlined zones, was positively related to a significantly greater abundance of synanthropic birds, which are species associated with dense urban conditions. Our results suggest that historical redlining and contemporary patterns of income inequality are associated with distinct avifaunal communities and their habitat, which potentially influence the human experience of these components of biodiversity throughout L.A. Redlined zones and low-income residential areas that were not graded by the HOLC can particularly benefit from deliberate urban greening and habitat enhancement projects, which would likely carry over to benefit birds and humans.</p>
