6000 ground truth of VOC and notarial deeds 3.000.000 HTR of VOC, WIC and notarial deeds
<p>The National Archives of the Netherlands and Noord-Hollands Archief conducted a project using the Transkribus HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition) platform. The aim was to semi automatically transcribe 2 million pages of old Dutch texts.</p> <p>The transcribed archives are 17<sup>th</sup> and 18<sup>th</sup> century documents from the Dutch East-India Company (VOC). And 19th century notarial deeds from Noord-Hollands Archief and other archives in the provinces.</p> <p>In order to train the HTR software a team produced transcriptions of approximately 6000 scans. The scans are randomly selected from the dataset. With the transcriptions a model is trained that can recognize more than 90% of the characters correctly. Transkribus transcribed the 2 million scans automatically using the trained model.</p> <p>The following Transkribus HTR+ model has been trained for the text recognition: "IJsberg". More information about the model can be found <a href="https://readcoop.eu/transkribus/public-models/">here</a>. See the chapter "Dutch Handwriting". However, the Transkribus team retrained the model with <a href="https://readcoop.eu/transkribus/howto/how-to-train-pylaia-models-in-transkribus/">PyLaia</a> technology, which improved the HTR+ model. This PyLaia model is not publicly available.</p> <p>Later on, 1 million extra scans concerning the West India Company (WIC) were transcribed automatically without adding extra ground truth or training. These archives are from the 17<sup>th</sup> and 18<sup>th</sup> century.</p> <p>The <a href="https://github.com/knaw-huc/loghi">Loghi Handwritten Text Recognition Toolkit</a> has been added to the arsenal of the Nation Archives of the Netherlands. 1.05.11.14, Notarissen Suriname tot 1828 [digitaal duplicaat] has been processed with this tooling.</p> <p>The datasets published in Zenodo contain the ground truth (scans in JPG, transcription in PAGE XML) and the HTR results (in PAGE XML and TXT). Oficio de Hipotecas de Girona. A dataset of Spanish notarial deeds (18th Century) for Handwritten Text Recognition and Layout Analysis of historical documents.
<p>This dataset is a subset of 596 documents from the <em>Registre d'Hipoteques de Girona</em> of 1769 collection, guarded by the <a href="http://xac.gencat.cat/ca/llista_arxius_comarcals/girones/"><em>Arxiu Històric de Girona</em></a>. This collection, is composed by hundreds of thousands of notarial deeds from the XVIII-XIX century (1768-1862). Sales, redemption of censuses, inheritance and matrimonial chapters are among the most common documentary typologies in the collection.</p> <p>This dataset is composed of more than 23700 text lines written by a single hand, covering more that 50 different topics (documentary typologies) and a vocabulary of more than 2400 different words. The documents are transcribed using the so-called diplomatic criteria. Additionally, transcripts were tagged with <br> extra enriching/complementary information (e.g. expansion of the abbreviations, hyphen marks, etc.). Along with the transcripts the layout of the document is detected and recorded. Pages have been labeled using six different layout regions.</p> <p>The images along with their respective ground-truth was compiled in PAGE compliant XML format<br> by the <a href="http://www2.udg.edu/tabid/11296/Default.aspx"><em>Centre de Recerca d'Història Rural</em></a> and the HTR group of the <a href="https://www.prhlt.upv.es">Pattern Recognition and Human Language Technologies Research Center</a>.</p>

Finnish Court Records-sub500. A dataset of Finnish notarial records (19th Century)
<p>This dataset is a selection of 500 pages from the Renovated District Court Records (19th century), one of the largest collections in the National Archives of Finland. The documents consists of records of deeds, mortgages, traditional life-annuity, among others.<br> This dataset contains images with one or two document pages, and it is annotated at image level using six different<br> region types along with the baselines and line level transcription (Swedish). This blend of single page and double page images is a common complexity found in historical documents.</p> <p>Layout labels are:<br> 1. page-number: the page number, commonly placed on the top-right corner of the image, <br> 2. paragraph: a paragraph placed on a single page image or on the left side of a double page image.<br> 3. paragraph_2: a paragraph placed on the right side of a double page image.<br> 4. marginalia: any annotation on the margin of the document,<br> 5. table: a table placed on a single page image or on the left side of a double page image.<br> 6. table_2: a table placed on the right side of a double page image.</p> <p>The images along with their respective ground-truth was compiled in PAGE compliant XML format by the <a href="https://www.arkisto.fi">National Archives of Finland</a> and the HTR group of the <a href="http://www.prhlt.upv.es">Pattern Recognition and Human Language Technologies Research Center</a>.</p>
