Long-term water quality monitoring in the Altamaha, Doboy and Sapelo sounds and the Duplin River near Sapelo Island, Georgia from November 2013 to December 2022

Water samples were collected on Georgia Coastal Ecosystems LTER oceanographic monitoring cruises from November 2012 through December 2022. Monthly samples were collected from GCE 6 (high and low tide) and GCE 7 (high tide). Quarterly samples were collected from the remaining GCE sites and AL-02, the Altamaha River oceanic end-member station. Concentrations of the following were measured using standard analytical methods: dissolved nutrients (phosphate, nitrate+nitrite, ammonium, silicate), dissolved organics (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus) and particulate carbon and nitrogen, chlorophyll, phaeopigments, total suspended solids and loss on ignition.

Seasonal Distribution of Ammonia-Oxidizing Archaea and Ammonia-Oxidation Rates in the South Atlantic Bight from April to November 2014

Previous work in nearshore waters of the Georgia USA coast has demonstrated mid-summer peaks in the abundance of Thaumarchaeota (blooms with 100 to 1,000-fold increases) accompanied by spikes in nitrite concentration. These studies were performed at one location, so the areal extent of the bloom is unknown, nor has it been demonstrated conclusively that it develops in inshore waters. We collected data on rates of ammonia oxidation and the distribution of Thaumarchaeota, ammonia-oxidizing Betaproteobacteria (AOB), nitrite-oxidizing Nitrospina and environmental variables during 6 cruises aboard the UNOLS vessel R/V Savannah from April to November 2014 on transects of the South Atlantic Bight to evaluate the areal extent and timing of the bloom. This data set includes measurements of Chlorophyll-a concentration, PAR attenuation coefficient, oxygen concenrations, temperature, salinity and nitogenous nutrient concentrations (nitrite, nitrite + nitrate, ammonium, urea), and estimates of Archaea, bacteria and diatom gene concentration based on quantitative PCR.

Water Quality Data (Grab Samples) from the Taylor Slough, just outside Everglades National Park (FCE), for August 1998 to November 2006

Water quality samples are being collected using ISCO autosamplers at all wetland sites (that is, all sites except TS/Ph-9, 10, and 11). The autosamplers contain 24 1L bottles. Water is sampled by programming the autosamplers to take composite samples once every 3 days. These samples are a composite of four 250mL subsamples drawn every 18 hours (a sampling scheme that captures a dawn, noon, dusk, and midnight sample in every three day composite). The samples are collected every 3-4 weeks and analyzed for total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), and salinity. When sites are visited to collect these samples, we also collect a grab sample that is immediately put on ice. A portion of these grab samples is filtered through a Whatman GF/F filter immediately upon return to the lab, and the filtered samples are analyzed for inorganic nutrients such as NO2-, NO3-, NH4+, SRP, and DOC. The unfiltered fraction of these grab samples is analyzed for TP, TN, and TOC. We use these montly grab samples to generate relationships between TP and SRP, and between TN and NO2- + NO3- + NH4+. Dissolved nutrients are measured using standard rapid flow analyzer (RFA) techniques. TP is analyzed with a modified Solorzano and Sharp (1980) technique. TN is measured with an Antec TN analyzer, TOC and DOC are quantified on a Shimadzu TOC Analyzer, and salinity is measured with a YSI conductivity meter. In addition to the regular water quality monitoring, we use the rain level actuators at all freshwater sites to trigger water sampling after rain events exceed a given threshold of duration and/or intensity. As currently programmed, when the threshold of = 2.5 cm of rain per hour is passed, the autosampler at that site collects a 1L sample every 15 minutes after the threshold has been reached and remains (previous to 2003- the autosampler was programmed to collect 500mL of water every 30 minutes while the threshold was being met). Soil pH, Eh and temperature readings are taken at SRS1b, SRS1c, SRS1d, SRS2 and SRS3. These measurements are taken only when the marsh is wet. Measurements are taken using an Orion model 250A meter, and the probes attached to the meter are the Orion Thermo pH probe and the Orion Eh probe. All readings are recorded in field notebooks, and then transferred into Microsoft Excel. The Eh reading is taken when the Eh probe is attached to the meter and the word "Ready" appears on the meter screen. Seasonal Electrofishing Data from Rookery Branch and Tarpon Bay, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), Florida, USA, November 2004 - ongoing

This study examines temporal and spatial dynamics in the fish community of the oligohaline to mesohaline reaches of ecotonal creeks along the southwest region of Everglades National Park. Collections of fish in SW ENP during 2004 - 2014 across Rookery Branch and Tarpon Bay. Sampling started in the wet season of 2004, and has been conducted three times per year at these approximate times: November (wet season); February (transition); and April (dry season). Electrofishing samples were processed in the field, and all species (except for non-natives) were returned live at the point of collection. In the Rookery Branch region, fish abundance varies markedly yearly and seasonally. Catches peak in the drier months, reflecting a pulse of movement by freshwater taxa into creeks as marshes upstream dry. The timing of this pulse is closely tied to the pattern of water recession in upstream marshes, and has important ramifications for wading bird prey availability.

Macrophyte and microbial mat biomass co-variation along a hydrologic gradient and response to a removal experiment in temporary wetlands Everglades, FL, USA, February 2003 – November 2006

This data package encompasses hydrologic variables, soil depth, hydrologically-regulated macrophyte community types, macrophyte biomass and community structure, and microbial mat biomass that was collected in two observational surveys and one in-situ experimental manipulation in six temporary wetland regions located in the Everglades, FL, USA. The goal of this project was to examine the co-variation in macrophyte and microbial mat biomass along the hydrologic gradient present across wetland regions and to determine the type and strength of interactions occurring between the two communities, which was tested using a biomass (macrophyte or microbial mat) removal experiment. The census observational survey took place at 140 sites from 2003-04-09 to 2004-05-26, which were randomly distributed across the hydrologic gradient present across the six temporary wetland regions. The transect observational survey occurred along six transects and each was deliberately established along the present hydrologic gradient within each region; a total of 254 sites were sampled from 2003-02-19 to 2005-03-04. The experiment took place at three temporary wetland sites with contrasting hydroperiods (3 – 6 months), and four transects were established per site with 24 pairs of control and treatment plots per transect. The removal treatment occurred one year before data collection, and data collection occurred from 2004-06-20 to 2006-11-25. The package includes six datasets, one R code file, and two shape files associated with the R code. Data collection for all datasets is complete. FCE1274_Census_Survey includes hydrologically-regulated macrophyte community type classifications, macrophyte biomass, microbial mat ash-free dry mass, mean soil depth, water depth, mean annual hydroperiod, and vegetation-inferred hydroperiod; each site was sampled once during the survey period and a subset of sites were sampled each year. Phytoplankton, benthic algae, and associated environmental data from Lake Okeechobee, Florida, USA, August 2023 - November 2023

This data package contains phytoplankton, periphytometer, and environmental data collected from the South Florida Water Management District’s (SFWMD) Aquifer Storage and Recovery (ASR) monitoring sites and the Indian Prairie marsh during the 2023 rainy season. We collected phytoplankton from a surface water grab and benthic algae from artificial substrates (periphytometers) that were placed outside for three weeks. We also collected associated nutrient measurements and environmental data. Collections occurred twice from August to November 2023. Data were collected to better understand how phytoplankton and benthic algae differed in their responses to TN:TP ratios in a hypereutrophic lake known to have spatial differences in limiting nutrients. Data collection for this data package is complete.

Sap-flux and associated environmental data from ash tree monitoring at four urban parks in St. Paul, Minnesota, USA, from May to November of 2023.

We measured the sap flux density of eighteen ash trees (Fraxinus spp.) of varying health and canopy conditions across four urban parks in the City of St. Paul, MN, USA in summer 2023 with a low-cost, compact data logger system we designed in-house. Although many ash trees in the city have either been killed or removed to control the spread of Emerald Ash Borer, chemical insecticide treatments are available for trees that are in early stages infestation. The trees selected for the research have all been receiving insecticide treatment for a few years, but their health and canopy conditions vary. We also have collocated temperature, soil moisture, and precipitation measurements at the same site for summer 2023.

Molecular composition of dissolved organic matter from Lake Mendota from June – November 2017, analyzed by Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds found in all natural waters. Its composition affects its reactivity towards numerous processes. Its composition is a function of both its source (e.g., allochthonous or autochthonous) as well as the extent of environmental processing it has undergone (e.g., chemical or biological degradation). Fourier-transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) allows for the characterization of dissolved organic matter at the molecular level. The water sample was collected near the NTL-LTER research buoy on Lake Mendota. Formula assignments were made to raw mass to charge ratios detected in the mass spectrum using a custom processing script and resulting in a list of chemical formulas making up the DOM sample.

Ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy absorbances for dissolved organic matter from Lake Mendota from June – November 2017

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is a complex mixture of organic compounds found in all natural waters. Its composition affects its reactivity towards numerous processes. Its composition is a function of both its source (e.g., allochthonous or autochthonous) as well as the extent of environmental processing it has undergone (e.g., chemical or biological degradation). Ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy is an analytical technique commonly used to assess the composition of dissolved organic matter in water samples. Here, we present spectra from Lake Mendota samples collected from June - November in 2017 at the surface of Lake Mendota as well as at specific depths within the water column. All samples were collected near the NTL-LTER research buoy. Absorbance values are listed for wavelengths 200 - 800 nm for each sample.

Sawgrass above ground biomass from the Shark River Slough, Everglades National Park (FCE LTER), South Florida, USA, November 2000 - ongoing

Sawgrass biomass is measured for TS/Ph-1, 2, 3, & 6 since 1999; TS/Ph-4 & 5 since 1997 to 2006; SRS-1b, 2, & 3 since 2000; SRS1c for 2005 to 2006, and SRS1d since 2006. Three 1 m2 plots are placed on each site. The sites are measured every two months. The number of sawgrass plants is counted for each 1 m2 plot and one third or a minimum of fifteen plants is measured. For each measured plant, measurements of the total number of live leaves, length of the live leaves, and culm diameter at the base are taken. From these measurements we calculate the average leaf length, and the sum of the length of the leaves. We created a model for biomass using a stepwise regression to see which of the variables measured and calculated are more correlated to explain plant biomass. Obtaining the mean biomass for the plants within the plot and multiplying it by the number of plants counted in the plot calculates biomass for each plot. The total biomass for each plot is summed with the other two plots in the same site, and they are averaged to obtain one biomass number per site. To validate our model, plant clippings are obtained in which four plants are clipped (small, medium, large, inflorescence) from each site. The same measurements are applied to the clipped plants as those applied to the measured plants in the plots. The plant clippings are oven dried at 70 degrees C and weighed.
