The dynamics of marsh-channel slump blocks: an observational study using repeated drone imagery
We analyzed the spatial and temporal dynamics of slump blocks within Dean Creek, a creek located on Sapelo Island (GA) and surrounded by salt marsh. To accomplish this, we utilized 11 images of Dean Creek captured between March 2020 and March 2021, which were acquired by using a DJI Matrice 210 UAV. For each image, we manually digitized the perimeters of slump blocks, which have the distance from intact marsh boundary exceeding 0.3 m. These digitized perimeters were subsequently converted into polygons to determine the size, number and cumulative area of slump blocks in each image. Temporal changes to the slump blocks between subsequent images were also analysed. The coordinate system of these polygon data is WGS 1984 UTM Zone 17N.
Wearable data and self reported fatigue scores from a remote observational study in Sjogren's disease, SLE and healthy participants
<p>Fatigue is a subjective, complex, and multi-faceted phenomenon, commonly experienced as tiredness. However, pathological fatigue is a major debilitating symptom associated with overwhelming feelings of physical and mental exhaustion. To date, there is no consensus about reliable quantitative assessments of fatigue.</p> <p>We collected observational data for a period of one month from 296 participants (healthy volunteers, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and Systemic Lupus Erythematosus patients) in the United States. Data comprised continuous multimodal digital data from Fitbit, including heart rate, physical activity, and sleep daily features, and app-based daily and weekly questions (e.g., pain, mood, general physical activity, and fatigue). When matching both sensor data and PROs, and excluding missing data, the dataset contains data from 183 subjects and 3950 recording days.</p> <p>The analysis of the association of digital data to self-reported fatigue was published at <em><strong>Rao C., et. al. (2023), Association of digital measures and self-reported fatigue: a remote observational study in healthy participants and participants with chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease, Frontiers in Digital Health</strong></em>.</p> <p>Demographics, digital parameters, and other information on this dataset can be found in the aforementioned manuscript and related supplementary material. Diet and SARS-Cov-2 Infection Risk: A Retrospective Observational Study
<p>Dataset, Analysis, Regression and Description.</p> <p>From mid-summer 2020 to January 2022, based on phase 2 to 3 of a self-reported questionnaire survey, we asked 15851 families across Iran about their diet and their COVID-19 disease. The results showed that some diets increased the risk of SARS-Cov-2 Apparent Infection Risk and some reduced it.</p> <p>The results show that the risk of reporting SARS-CoV-2 apparent infection in the second group was 12 times higher than the Third group. <strong>The two-tailed P value is less than 0.0001</strong>. Also, the risk of reporting SARS-CoV-2 apparent infection in the first group was 9 times higher than the Third group. <strong>The two-tailed P value is less than 0.0001</strong>. By conventional criteria, these differences are considered to be extremely statistically significant.</p>

fMRI study of a VR-based motor imagery and observation task, a conventional motor imagery task, and a motor execution task
<p>We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to map brain activation during: i) a VR-based motor imagery and observation task called NeuRow; ii) a conventional non-VR, motor imagery task based on the Graz paradigm; and iii) a motor execution task. Data were collected from two groups of healthy right-handed participants: 11 young adults (mean 58 age 27 ± 4 years) and 10 older adults (mean age 51 ± 6 years). The experimental protocol was designed in collaboration with the local healthcare system of Madeira, Portugal (SESARAM), in accordance with the 1964 Declaration of Helsinki, and approved by the scientific and ethic committees of the Central Hospital of Funchal with approval reference number: 21/2019. A written informed consent was obtained from each participant upon recruitment.</p> <p>Imaging was carried out on a 3T GE Signa HDxt MRI scanner (General Electrics Healthcare, Little Chalfont, United Kingdom) using a 12-channel head coil. fMRI data were acquired using a multi-slice 2D gradient-echo EPI sequence (TR/TE = 2500/30 ms, voxel size = 3.75x3.75x3.00 mm3, flip angle = 90, and FoV = 240x240 mm2). For co-registration purposes, whole-brain structural images were also acquired using a T1-weighted 3D Fast Spoiled Gradient-Echo (FSPGR) sequence (TR/TE = 7.8/3.0 ms, voxel size = 1.00x1.00x0.60 mm3).</p> <p>The following three tasks were performed for left and right arm movement separately, yielding a total of six fMRI runs (pseudo-randomized order): (a) NeuRow task: motor imagery and observation task through VR scenario (NeuRow); (b) Graz task: motor imagery only with abstract instructions (Graz), (c) and motor execution (ME): finger-tapping. Each fMRI run consisted of 8 trials, each with 20 s of baseline followed by 20 s of task (total run duration 5.33 min).</p>

Fiddler crab impacts from observational study 2020-21: Aboveground & diatom biomass, plant height, percent N, burrow & mussel density, belowground biomass, and organic matter
The fiddler crab, Minuca pugnax, expanded its range into the Gulf of Maine recently and was first observed in the Plum Island Estuary in 2014. In 2020 and 2021, we investigated the impact of this burrowing crab on benthic microalgal biomass, sediment properties and the above- and belowground biomass of the cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora. To accomplish this, we conducted a control-impact study in plots with and without fiddler crabs in three marshes in the PIE-LTER: Sawyer, Clubhead, and Metcalf. In its historical range (i.e., south of Cape Cod), M. pugnax, enhances Spartina aboveground biomass. In contrast, we found that, on average, when fiddler crabs were present, aboveground biomass was 40% lower in the PIE-LTER. We also found that belowground biomass was 30% lower and benthic microalgal biomass was 45% lower when fiddler crabs were present, which is in line with our expectations. Because fiddler crabs reduced the biomass of foundational primary producers in its expanded range, our results imply that M. pugnax can influence other saltmarsh functions such as carbon storage and accretion as they expand north. More broadly, our results suggest that as species expand or shift their range with climate change, not only can they have profound impacts in their new ranges, but that those impacts can be the inverse of what is seen in their historical ranges.
Longitudinal observational study of pediatric patients with primary brain tumors: establishment of a hospital-based registry.
<p>Although tumors of the central nervous system (CNS) represent 2 % of all malignancies in general, they cause a disproportionately large morbidity and mortality and are the second most common form of cancer in children and the major solid tumor in childhood in the U.S., occurring in 21.3% of all children with malignant disease. The treatment of brain tumors in children and adolescents has evolved significantly in recent decades. Nowadays, most children with a diagnosis of brain tumor are treated properly and achieve prolonged survival. In order to obtain an overview of the impact of brain tumors, specialized registries, which provide information on all types of brain tumors, have emerged in several countries. Following on the pioneering Japanese and American experiences of specialized national records of brain tumors, other specialized registries were opened in European countries. This project aims to initiate a registry of the epidemiological profile of patients treated for CNS tumors in the Pediatric Cancer Center (CPC) of our hospital from January 2000 to December 2013, at diagnosis and during follow-up, updating information periodically. This data will be recorded in an electronic database capable of storing, retrieving and presenting information of interest. Prospectively recorded epidemiological data of patients diagnosed from January 2014 will be accrued, maintaining the database active to continuously record information on patients with CNS tumors treated in the CPC HIAS. Thus, creating a hospital registry of pediatric patients with CNS tumors. To this end, an instrument of data collection will be created using Google Apps (Google Inc., 2014), a digital platform with capacity for storage, creation and editing of documents and collaboration in real time over the cloud.</p>
Lung ultrasonography features and risk stratification in 80 patients with COVID-19: a prospective observational cohort study
<p><strong>Background</strong></p> <p>Point-of-care lung ultrasound (LUS) is a promising and pragmatic risk stratification tool in COVID-19. This study describes and compares early LUS characteristics across of range of clinical outcomes.</p> <p><strong>Method</strong></p> <p>Prospective observational study of PCR-confirmed COVID-19 patients in the emergency department (ED) of Lausanne University Hospital. A trained physician recorded LUS images using a standardized protocol. Two experts retrospectively reviewed images blinded to patient outcome. We describe and compare early LUS findings (acquired within 24hours of presentation at the ED) between patient groups based on their outcome at 7-days after inclusion: 1) self-resolving outpatients, 2) hospitalised and 3) intubated/death. The LUS score was used to discriminate between groups.</p> <p><strong>Findings</strong></p> <p>Between March 6 and April 3 2020, we included 80 patients (18 outpatients, 41 hospitalized and 21 intubated/dead). 73 patients (91%) had abnormal LUS (72% outpatients, 95% hospitalised and 100% intubated/death; p=0.004). The proportion of involved zones was lower in outpatients compared with other groups (median 30% [IQR 0-40%], 44% [33-70%] and 70% [50-88%], p<0.001). Predominant abnormal patterns were bilateral and multifocal spread thickening of the pleura with pleural line irregularities (77%), confluent B lines (66%) and pathologic B lines (55%). Posterior inferior zones were more often affected. Median LUS score had a good level of discrimination between outpatients and others with area under the ROC of 0.80 (95% CI 0.66-0.95).</p> <p><strong>Interpretation</strong></p> <p>Systematic LUS is a reliable, cheap and easy-to-use triage tool for the early stratification of risk in COVID-19 patients presenting at emergency departments.</p> <p><strong>Funding</strong></p> <p>Leenaards Foundation</p>
Volatile organic compound analysis, a new tool in the quest for preterm birth prediction – an observational cohort study
<p>Vaginal swabs were taken in pregnancy in high risk asymptomatic women attending a preterm prevention clinic. Women in the study attended the clinical due to a history of preterm birth or midtrimester pregnancy loss, or due to a history of cervical surgery. Individualised management plans were made depending upon individual patient risk factors. During their attendance to the clinic vaginal swabs were taken for VOC analysis. Swabs were taken between 15 and 28 weeks gestation. Women consented to vaginal swabs at each of their visits to the clinic. The dataset contains GC-IMS VOC data from a G.A.S. GC-IMS and includes a Spreadsheet of demographics.</p>

Epidemiology, risk factors and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients in a Swiss university hospital: an observational retrospective study
<p>This is the dataset of the study called "Epidemiology, risk factors and clinical course of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients in a Swiss university hospital: an observational retrospective study". <br> <br> <strong>Abstract: </strong></p> <p>Background<br> Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is now a global pandemic with Europe and the USA at its epicenter. Little is known about risk factors for progression to severe disease in Europe. This study aims to describe the epidemiology of COVID-19 patients in a Swiss university hospital.</p> <p>Methods<br> This retrospective observational study included all adult patients hospitalized with a laboratory confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection from March 1 to March 25, 2020. We extracted data from electronic health records. The primary outcome was the need to mechanical ventilation at day 14. We used multivariate logistic regression to identify risk factors for mechanical ventilation. Follow-up was of at least 14 days. <br> <br> Results<br> 200 patients were included, of whom 37 (18·5%) needed mechanical ventilation at 14 days. The median time from symptoms onset to mechanical ventilation was 9·5 days (IQR 7.00, 12.75). Multivariable regression showed increased odds of mechanical ventilation in males (3.26, 1.21-9.8; p=0.025), in patients who presented with a qSOFA score ≥2 (6.02, 2.09-18.82; p=0.001), with bilateral infiltrate (5.75, 1.91-21.06; p=0.004) or with a CRP of 40 mg/l or greater (4.73, 1.51-18.58; p=0.013). <br> <br> Conclusions<br> This study gives some insight in the epidemiology and clinical course of patients admitted in a European tertiary hospital with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Male sex, high qSOFA score, CRP of 40 mg/l or greater and a bilateral radiological infiltrate could help clinicians identify patients at high risk for mechanical ventilation.</p>
