Overall, coloration of H. tarsalis females varies from mottled amber brown to darker brown, but the contrasting venter has been consistent and apparently diagnostic when compared to H. solieri (see also Fig. 5). Arrows in C and D indicate opercular ring, a diagnostic trait for separating the two species, where the ring of H. tarsalis eggs is more flattened while that of H. solieri is more conspicuous and raised.
