Dataset: Time-dependent source apportionment of submicron organic aerosol for a rural site in an alpine valley using a rolling positive matrix factorisation (PMF) window

<p>Uploaded igor pxp files are the data to generate&nbsp;all figures of the results from our publication in Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics with the name of <em>&quot;Time dependent source apportionment of submicron organic aerosol for a rural site in an alpine valley using a rolling PMF window&quot;</em>&nbsp;by Chen et al.&nbsp;(2021).</p> <p>This study deployed a novel and advanced source apportionment technique on a dataset measured in Magadino. Rolling PMF allows retrieving more realistic, time-dependent and detailed information of the organic aerosol sources. This work highlights the strength of the rolling PMF mechanism by comparing it with the results derived from conventional seasonal PMF. Overall, this comprehensive interpretation of chemical speciation monitor (ACSM) data could be a role model for similar analyses.</p>

Robot Self-Assembly as Adaptive Growth Process: Collective Selection of Seed Position and Self-Organizing Tree-Structures

<p>Autonomous self-assembly allows to create structures and scaffolds on demand and automatically. The desired structure may be predetermined or alternatively it is the result of an artificial growth process that adapts to environmental features and to the intermediate structure itself. In a self-organizing and decentralized control approach the robots interact only locally and form the structure collectively. Designing a complete approach that allows the robot group to collectively decide on where to start the self-assembly, that adapts at runtime to environmental conditions, and that guarantees the structural stability is challenging and does not yet exist. We present an approach to self-assembly inspired by diffusion-limited aggregation that generates an adaptive structure reacting to environmental conditions in an artificial growth process. During a preparatory stage the robots collectively decide where to start the self-assembly also depending on environmental conditions. In the actual self-assembly stage, the robots create tree-like structures that grow towards light. We report the results of robot self-assembly experiments with 50 Kilobots. Our results demonstrate how an adaptive growth process can be implemented in robots. We explain how our approach will be extended to a 3-d growth process and how robot self-assembly as an open-ended adaptive growth process opens up a multiplicity of future opportunities.</p>

<p>This repository contains the raw experimental and PHITS-simulated data used in the JINST article &ldquo;The Backscatter Gating method for time, energy, and position resolution characterization of long form factor organic scintillators&rdquo; by Hunter N. Ratliff et al., available at <a href="https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-0221/19/07/P07002">https://doi.org/10.1088/1748-0221/19/07/P07002</a> (the accepted manuscript can also be found at <a href="https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3145287">https://hdl.handle.net/11250/3145287</a> and <a href="https://hratliff.com/publications/">https://hratliff.com/publications/</a>).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The data consists of three top-level directories, each with various subdirectories. &nbsp;Within the &ldquo;PHITS-simulated-data&rdquo; directory are the PHITS simulations (including input and output files) used in producing Figures 4 and 5 in the manuscript, showing energy spectra in the bar for BSG events from a Cs-137 emission for placement of the source on the bar and on the BSG detector and with spacings between the bar and BSG detector of 20, 80, and 150 mm, along with the energy-dependent spatial distribution of these recoil electrons in the bar.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>The other two top-level directories contain raw data produced by the CAEN CoMPASS software when acquiring data experimentally.&nbsp; In the analysis for each measurement, the contents of the &ldquo;RAW&rdquo; folders were used.&nbsp; The &ldquo;Energy-calibrations-of-CeBr3&rdquo; directory contains the energy spectra of the CeBr3 detector (used as the BSG detector) when exposed to a variety of radioactive sources, used together to energy-calibrate the CeBr3 detector.&nbsp; The &ldquo;Backscatter-gating-measurements&rdquo; directory contains all of the list-mode data acquired with CoMPASS used for all of the other experimental measurements presented in the manuscript.&nbsp; It contains subdirectories for varied sources, source positions along the bar, distances between the bar and BSG detector, measurements with the source affixed to the BSG detector instead, and a few miscellaneous measurements.&nbsp; The &ldquo;images&rdquo; directories within each measurement&rsquo;s directory (at the same level as the &ldquo;RAW&rdquo; folders) contain images produced by the analysis script written for this work used for diagnostics and presenting analyzed data.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>

Intentional Forgetting in Organizations: The Positive Effects of Decision Support Systems on Mental Resources and Well-being

<p>This dataset contains raw data collected in an experimental study at the University of Muenster, Germany. The study is part of a larger research project and examined &ldquo;intentional forgetting&rdquo; effects in a simulated sales planning scenario. Intentional forgetting was operationalized via computer-based decision support system that enabled users to forget decision-relevant background information. We assumed that such intentional forgetting not only enhances decision quality but also decreases strain of decision makers and releases memory capacities for additional tasks.</p>

Positive associations of soil organic matter and crop yields across a regional network of working farms

<p>The amount of soil organic matter (SOM) is considered a key indicator of soil properties associated with higher fertility. Despite the ubiquity of assumptions surrounding SOM's contributions to soil functioning, we lack quantitative relationships between SOM and yield outcomes on working farms. We quantified the relationship between SOM and yields of corn (<i>Zea mays </i>L.) and silage for a dataset of 170 fields arrayed across 49 farms in a network of growers based in Wisconsin and Minnesota, USA. As SOM concentrations increase, so do yields, though gains start to level off around 4% SOM. When examining the relationship between yield and soil health indicators representative of biologically active carbon pools, we found that mineralizable carbon (min-C) has a stronger relationship with yield than permanganate oxidizable C (POXC). Mineral fertilizer, manure, and SOM had relationships of similar magnitude with yield, highlighting that SOM in combination with exogenous inputs likely plays an important role in driving agricultural productivity in this region. An SOM by crop rotation interaction indicated that the impact of SOM on crop yields varied depending on rotation (continuous corn versus corn in rotation). That is, continuous corn had lower yields than corn in rotation despite higher SOM concentrations. Our findings provide insight into the relationship between indicators of soil health, farm management, and crop yields for a set of working farms and lend support to the goals of soil health initiatives that rest on building SOM in agricultural soils to improve agricultural outcomes.</p>

Development of a versatile source apportionment analysis based on positive matrix factorization: a case study of the seasonal variation of organic aerosol sources in Estonia

<p>This work presents an advanced source apportionment approach that estimates the uncertainties of the positive matrix factorization model. The selection of the environmentally meaningful solutions is challenging in such models and a systematic approach to identify and sort the factors is important. We applied this method to a novel data set covering one yearly cycle at three sites in Estonia. The main results showed that biomass burning dominates in winter, while biogenic sources prevail in summer.</p>
