Rates of benthic metabolism and nutrient cycling in the Parker and Rowley Rivers of the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts, PIE LTER.
Rates of benthic metabolism and nutrient cycling in the Parker and Rowley Rivers of the Plum Island Sound estuary. Measurements include those conducted at two sites in the Parker River in Spring (high river discharge) and Fall (low discharge) for long-term monitoring, also at other sites throughout the estuary over a variety of seasons and salinities.
PIE LTER dissolved nutrient and particulate concentrations of freshwater inputs to the Plum Island estuarine system, Massachusetts, taken approximately monthly.
Multi-year data of water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments, was determined from monthly grab samples taken at watershed inputs to the Plum Island Sound Estuary. Sampling sites were the Ipswich River (Sylvania Dam, Ipswich, MA), Parker River Dam (Central St, Newbury, MA), Egypt River (Ipswich, MA) Mill River (Newbury, MA), Muddy Run (Ipswich, MA), Little River (Newbury, MA). These nutrient concentrations are then used in conjunction with USGS discharge data (recorded at gages in the Parker River at Byfield, MA and the Ipswich River at Ipswich, MA) to calculate annual nutrient loading to the Plum Island Sound Estuary, coming over each dam. Annual yield is also calculated for both dams. Refer to file WAT-VA-Load for loading data.
PIE LTER transects of the Parker River Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts conducted at dawn and dusk, containing dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, percent saturation, pH, DIC and pCO2 data.
Multi-year transects, beginning in 1995, of the Parker River Plum Island Sound Estuary conducted at dawn and dusk, containing dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, percent saturation, pH, salinity, DIC and pCO2 measurements. Differences between dawn and dusk measurements can be used to determine the water metabolism and corresponding estimates of gross primary production, total system respiration and net ecosystem production.
Water samples collected for dissolved inorganic carbon and nutrient analysis during tidal creek lateral exchange measurements approximately every 15 minutes from beginning of flood tide to the following low tide, Rowley, MA, PIE LTER.
Measurement of the lateral exchange of nutrients, sediment, and carbon in tidal creek systems draining predominantly low-elevation marsh dominated by Spartina alterniflora and high-elevation marsh dominated by Spartina patens located in Rowley, MA.
PIE LTER surface elevation table (SET) pin height data from twelve marsh sites in northeast Massachusetts.
Surface elevation table (SET) measurements from 26 SETs at 9 marsh sites in the Plum Island Sound Long-Term Ecological Research Site in the Great Marsh, Massachusetts. SET measurements are useful for determining the relative elevation change of marsh sediments. Precise measurements of sediment elevation in marshes is useful for determining rates of elevation change in response to changes in sea level.
Transects of the Rowley River, Plum Island Sound Estuary, Massachusetts conducted at dawn and dusk, containing dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, percent saturation, pH, DIC and pCO2 data, PIE LTER.
Multi-year transects, beginning in 2016, of the Rowley River Plum Island Sound Estuary, MA conducted at dawn and dusk, containing dissolved oxygen, conductivity, temperature, percent saturation, pH, DIC and pCO2 measurements. Differences between dawn and dusk measurements can be used to determine the water column metabolism and corresponding estimates of gross primary production, total system respiration and net ecosystem production.

PIE LTER zooplankton surveys using plankton tows along transects in the Plum Island Sound estuary, Massachusetts (Reformatted to the ecocomDP Design Pattern)
This data package is formatted as an ecocomDP (Ecological Community Data Pattern). For more information on ecocomDP see https://github.com/EDIorg/ecocomDP. This Level 1 data package was derived from the Level 0 data package found here: https://pasta.lternet.edu/package/metadata/eml/knb-lter-pie/405/2. The abstract below was extracted from the Level 0 data package and is included for context: Zooplankton were collected in spring and late summer/fall at four stations representing the salinity gradient in the Parker River-Plum Island Sound estuary. Two size classes, greater than 335 micron and greater than 150 micron, were collected by net tows. Conductivity or salinty and temperature were recorded for each sample. Samples were concentrated to less than 250 mls and preserved in 70 percent EtOH. For taxonomy, sample splits were taken such that a minimum of 250 individuals were present, and counted under a dissecting microscope. Individuals were identified to the lowest taxonomic level possible, generally to species. Adult copepods were additionally characterized by sex. The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER has, since its inception in 1998, been working towards a predictive understanding of the long-term response of coupled land-estuary-ocean ecosystems to changes in three drivers: climate, sea level, and human activities. The Plum Island Estuary-LTER includes the coupled Parker, Rowley, and Ipswich River watersheds, estuarine areas including a shallow open sound, and extensive tidal marshes. PIE is connected to the Gulf of Maine in the Acadian biogeographic province, which is a cold water, macrotidal environment that is geographically and biologically distinct from coastal ecosystems to the south of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Over the next four years the LTER will build upon the progress they have made in understanding the importance of spatial patterns and connections across the land-margin ecosystem. The overarching goal is to understand how external drivers, ecosystem
PIE LTER surveys of salt marsh breeding birds using point counts in Rowley and Newbury, Massachusetts
This data set contains the results of point count surveys of breeding birds in the salt marshes of the Plum Island Estuary. Surveys have been carried out each year in June beginning in 2004 and are ongoing. Currently six circles of 100 m radius are being surveyed. Three of the circles are in plots that had been regularly hayed and three in unhayed plots. Currently only one of the plots is regularly hayed. 85 species recorded as of 2020. Most frequently encountered are Agelaius phoeniceus, Ammospiza caudacuta, Tringa semipalmata.
PIE LTER water-column nutrient and particulate transects along the Parker River Estuary, Massachusetts, 1994 - 2019.
Water chemistry including nutrient concentrations for various forms of N, P, C, as well as suspended sediments and light extinction coefficients, was determined from bi-annual nutrient transects along the Plum Island Sound estuary from the Parker River Dam to the mouth of the sound. Grab samples were taken at 11 sites along a 24 km transect from the mouth of the estuary to as near the dam at the head of the estuary as poosible. These samples have generally been collected in Spring and Fall and are done in conjunction with metabolism transects measuring dissolved oxygen levels. The Spring and Fall transects correspond to the high-flow, pre-growth season and the low-flow, post-growth season, respectively.

The Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER is developing a predictive understanding of the response of a linked watershed-marsh-estuarine system in northeastern Massachusetts to rapid environmental change. Over the last 30 years, surface sea water temperatures in the adjacent Gulf of Maine have risen at 3 times the global average, rates of sea-level rise have accelerated, and precipitation has increased. Coupled with these changes in climate and sea level are substantial changes within the rapidly urbanizing watersheds that influence water, sediment, and nutrient delivery to the marsh and estuary. In PIE IV our focus is on: Dynamics of coastal ecosystems in a region of rapid climate change, sea-level rise, and human impacts.
