pop-cosmos: Galaxy property and redshift catalog for COSMOS2020

This record (v≥2.0.0) contains data products associated with the paper "pop-cosmos: Insights from generative modeling of a deep, infrared-selected galaxy population" by Thorp et al. (2025). Earlier versions of this record (v<2.0.0) contain data products associated with the paper "pop-cosmos: Scaleable inference of galaxy properties and redshifts with a data-driven population model" by Thorp et al. (2024), which are superseded by the contents of v2.0.0. In v≥2.0.0, we include results for all COSMOS2020 galaxies with $\textit{Ch.1}<26$ or $r<25$.

The included products are derived from spectral energy distribution (SED) fits to 26-band COSMOS2020 photometry, using the 16-parameter SPS model described in Thorp et al. (2024, 2025), and the
pop-cosmos
prior from Thorp et al. (2025). All results are based on Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) runs using the configuration described in Thorp et al. (2024, 2025). Results correspond to v2.1 of the COSMOS2020 catalog.

The current release includes the following files:

README_v2_2_0.txt: Detailed information about how to read the other files in the record.

mcmc_summaries.h5.gz: Zipped HDF5 file with summaries (percentiles) of the posteriors.

mcmc_samples_pop_cosmos.h5.gz: Zipped HDF5 file with posterior samples (using
pop-cosmos
prior).

mcmc_samples_Prospector.h5.gz: Zipped HDF5 file with posterior samples (using
Prospector
-$\alpha$ prior).

If you make use of any of these products, please cite this repository and Thorp et al. (2024, 2025). Please also cite the
pop-cosmos
overview paper by Alsing et al. (2024), and the paper by Deger et al. (2025). If you make use of any COSMOS data products, please cite Weaver et al. (2022) and any other relevant publications. If you make use of COSMOS spectroscopic data, please cite Khostovan et al. (2025) and references therein.

If you spot any issues or have any requests, please contact the corresponding author (Stephen Thorp) using the details in the README.

If you want to access
pop-cosmos
mock galaxy catalogs, these can be found on Zenodo.

Related software, including a demo notebook for working with the data in this record, can be found on GitHub.

References:

Alsing et al. BATAL POPS flight (July 2019)

The Printed Optical Particle Spectrometer (POPS) was operated during the BATAL (Balloon Measurements of the Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer) campaign in 2019 in Hyderabad (17N,78E), India. The primary goal of this campaign is the investigation of the ATAL (Asian Tropopause Aerosol Layer). Here, we use POPS observations from one balloon flight on July 17th 2019 (UT time). The instrument weighs around 800g and uses a 405 mm diode laser. POPS delivers aerosol number concentration and size distribution measurements. Here the file corresponds to concentrations in each size class between 0.15 and ~3 µm.

Pop-up satellite archival tagging data of Atlantic bluefin tuna in the Gulf of Lions, Northwestern Mediterranean Sea

24 Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) individuals (117–158 cm fork length) were tagged with pop-up archival tags in the Gulf of Lion, NW-Mediterranean Sea between 2015 and 2016.

Tag programming and data

The tags applied (miniPATs by Wildlife Computers, https://wildlifecomputers.com) can record depth and temperature time series (denoted hereafter as DepthTS and TempTS, respectively) at a temporal resolution of 3–5 s (depending on the predefined deployment duration) and a vertical resolution of 0.5 m. Based on these data, the tag calculates and stores additional data products such as PAT-style Depth–Temperature profiles (PDT), time at depth data, and time at temperature. After pop-up, the tags transmit user-defined data products and subsets from the recorded data sets. All our tags were configured to transmit the following data products: daily light curves, DepthTS, and PDT. In order to maximize data coverage of the transmitted datasets, we decreased the temporal resolution of the DepthTS and PDT data after the first tagging campaign in 2015 from 150 to 600 s and 6 to 24 h, respectively. For both years, deployment durations were set to 150 and 90 d during spring (April–May) and summer (August–September), respectively. A description of the electronic tagging procedure can be found in Bauer et al. (2020).

Seven tags were physically recovered, providing the complete archived time series data at a resolution of 3–5 s. Nineteen tags provided more than 7 d of complete DepthTS data (i.e. without transmission gaps). Three tags from 2016 had deployment durations of <1 week (#15P0983, #15P0985, and #15P0986) because of hardware failure.

Provided files contain raw tag data (transmitted and recovered datasets) from the Wildlife Computers Data Portal as well as related GPE3 model runs (geolocation estimates).

We thank the crews of the Cyngali and Roussillon Fishing recreational fishing vessels for their cooperation during the tagging cruises. This tagging study was part of the BLUEMED project and funded by the French National Research Agency (ANR; Project-ID ANR-14-ACHN-0002).

WaivOps POP-ROK: Open Audio Resources for Machine Learning in Music

POP-ROK Dataset

POP-ROK is an open audio dataset featuring an uncurated collection of synthetic drum recordings in the style of pop rock music. It includes 5,378 audio loops recorded in uncompressed stereo WAV format, along with paired JSON files intended for the supervised training of generative AI audio models.

Overview

The POP-ROK Dataset was developed by sonifying a collection of approximately 30 acoustic drum kits with a paired MIDI dataset covering basic rhythm patterns, excluding toms. Data augmentation included a random drum-swapping method to generate unique drum kits and reverb simulations to represent various room sizes. This dataset is intended for training or fine-tuning AI models in rhythm notation with paired drum note labels, aiming to replicate the sound of live drumming.

The primary purpose of this dataset is to provide accessible content for machine learning applications in music and audio. Potential use cases include generative music, feature extraction, tempo detection, audio classification, rhythm analysis, drum synthesis, music information retrieval (MIR), sound design and signal processing.

Specifications

5,378 audio loops (approximately 24 hours)

16-bit WAV format

Tempo range: 100-130 BPM

Paired label data (WAV + JSON)

Variational drum patterns

Subgenre styles (Pop, classic rock, soft rock, country)

A JSON file is provided for referencing and converting MIDI note numbers to text labels. You can update the text labels to suit your preferences.

License

This dataset was compiled by WaivOps, a crowdsourced music project managed by the sound label company Patchbanks. All recordings have been compiled by verified sources for copyright clearance.

The POP-ROK dataset is licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0).

Additional Info

For audio examples or more information about this dataset, please refer to the GitHub repository.

Data from: Pop‐off data storage tags reveal niche partitioning between native and non‐native predators in a novel ecosystem

1. Niche partitioning might be predicted to be particularly dynamic in 'novel ecosystems' characterized by human-altered environmental conditions and biological invasions. Restoration efforts for native species in such systems can be informed by detailed characterization of niche partitioning. 2. In Lake Ontario, fishery management agencies have been engaged in a long-term struggle to restore native top predators including lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush). Meanwhile, management agencies continue to stock non-native species like Chinook salmon (Oncorhynchus tshawytscha) into the lake to support a recreational fishery and to help control the abundance of a non-native forage fish, the alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus). 3. We used pop-off data storage tags to study fine scale (9.1M lines of data from 22 animals) behaviour and habitat use by lake trout (native) and Chinook salmon (non-native) in Lake Ontario in terms of depth and temperature, recorded at ≤70 s intervals for periods of up to 12 months. 4. Chinook salmon occupied warmer and shallower waters during summer than did lake trout, and their niche breadth was wider. They achieved greater niche breadth in part because they were much more active vertically, cumulatively traveling 103±1 m hour-1 during summer (model-estimated median), whereas most lake trout were relatively inactive vertically (7±1 m hour-1). In each of our analyses, there was more inter-individual variation among lake trout than among Chinook salmon, driven by some lake trout that spent considerable time making forays into warmer, shallower waters. 5. Synthesis and applications. Our results illustrate the different foraging tactics used by two species in the Great Lakes and reflect their distinct life histories. Vertical and thermal niche partitioning between Chinook salmon and lake trout helps to explain how these species can co-exist in a multi-species fishery even while having substantial overlap in diet. The diversity of behaviours exhibited here by native lake trout have likely helped them persist during dramatic changes to the forage base in recent decades; that flexibility could help underlie their long-term prospects for restoration during future changes to the ecosystem.
