Participatory Conceptual Diagrams to research small-scale farmers´ information sharing for adapting to climate change in Mozambique
<p>Data collected from focus groups discussions with local communities of 4 distrcits of Mozambique in November 2019. The data are a series of conceptual maps describing a) the farming practices improvements most needed to adapt to climate change, and b) the most useful information for enabling the selected improvements, the most effective information sharing sources - e.g. institutional actors, members of the community, technical support, etc. - and means of communication - e.g. radio, mobile phone, word-of-mouth, etc. For the second purpose, connections were drawn by the members of the community between information sources and the actions needed for climate change adaptation. Participants also assigned a weight to the connections, selecting between: strong, medium or a weak connection.</p> <p>Notes about the discussions and opinions expressed by participants, written down by the research team, are also included.</p> <p>Together with the data, PDF files describing metadata and detailed methodology followed are included.</p>

Dataset for: Older adults' suggestions of research topics on ageing well in urban environments – a participatory study
<p>Dataset related to the manuscript <em>Older adults’ suggestions of research topics on ageing well in urban environments – a participatory study</em>.</p> <p>For this study, a total of 1000 participants aged 65 years or older from five different neighborhoods of Berlin were randomly chosen and were sent a single item questionnaire allowing them to freely propose research topics regarding ageing well in the city. This dataset contains the valid answers we received by participants. Only information that potentially allowed identification of the participants (name, addresses, exact location descriptions) were redacted.</p>

Data from: Reporting guidelines for community-based participatory research (CBPR) did not improve the reporting quality of published studies: a systematic review of studies on smoking cessation
<p>Although a guideline for reporting the results of community-based participatory research (CBPR) was published in 2010, the impact on the quality of reporting a CBPR on smoking cessation is unknown. Here we provide the raw data of a systematic review that assessed the impact of a 2010 community-based participatory research reporting guideline. on the quality of reporting a CBPR on smoking cessation. Specifically, we searched the MEDLINE, Embase, the Cochrane Central Register for Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases and included articles published up to October 2018 (PROSPERO: CRD42019111668). We assessed reporting quality using a 13-item checklist.</p>

Co-designing conservation interventions through participatory action research in the Indian Trans-Himalaya
<ol> <li> <span>Community-based conservation, despite being more inclusive than fortress conservation, </span><span>has been criticized for being a top-down implementation of external ideas brought to local communities for conservation's benefit. This is particularly true for Changpas, the pastoral people of Changthang in trans-Himalayan India who live alongside unique wildlife. </span> </li> <li><span>Our main aim was to co-design conservation interventions through participatory action research. We worked with two Changpa communities, to understand issues faced by them. Subsequently, we co-designed context-sensitive interventions to facilitate positive human-nature interactions. We did so by integrating the PARTNERS (Presence, Aptness, Respect, Transparency, Empathy, Responsiveness, Strategic Support) principles with the Trinity of Voice (Access, Standing, and Influence). </span></li> <li><span>In Rupsho, we facilitated focus group discussions (FGDs) led by the community. We found livestock depredation by wildlife was primarily facilitated by the weather. This led to co-designing of a new corral design which was piloted with seven households, safeguarding 2,385 pashmina goat and sheep. Approximating the value of each sheep/goat to be USD125, this intervention amounts to a significant economic protection of USDc.42,500 for each household. This is along with intangible gains of trust, ownership, and improved self-esteem. </span></li> <li><span>In Tegazong, a restricted area adjoining the Indo-China border with no previous research records, we worked with 43 Changpa people to co-create research questions of mutual interest. Wildlife presence and reasons for livestock loss were identified as areas of mutual interest. The herders suggested they would record data in a form of their choice, for six months, while they live in their winter pastures. This participatory community monitoring revealed nutrition and hypothermia to be a key cause of livestock death. Subsequently, we delimited two previously untested interventions: lamb cribs and provisioning of locally-sourced barley as feed supplement. The wildlife monitoring recorded the first record of Tibetan Gazelle <em>Procapra picticuadata</em>, outside of their known distribution, in Tegazong. </span></li> <li><span>We aim to highlight the benefits of co-designing projects with local communities that link research and conservation, while also discussing the challenges faced. Ultimately, such projects are needed to ensure ethical knowledge generation and conservation that aims to be decolonial and inclusive.</span></li> </ol>
