O. mykiss passages at the Stanislaus River weir, 2005-2025

The Central Valley Project Improvement Act (CVPIA) provides funds to aid the San Joaquin Basin Steelhead Collaborative and initiate a Steelhead Life-Cycle Monitoring Program. This dataset includes observations of O. mykiss in the Stanislaus River during the steelhead spawning migration period, September through May. Fish are observed at an Alaskan-style weir outfitted with a VAKI Riverwatcher fish counting device. The counting device provides visual records of upstream passing individuals that are later reviewed by an experienced biologist. During times when the counting device is offline, a continuous video feed is reviewed to provide counts and identifications of passing fish. The length of passing fish is estimated using a known body depth to length ratio derived from individuals trapped and measured at the weir. The weir also has a trap box that, when closed, allows investigators to physically capture fish for measurements, biological sample collection, and injection of a PIT tag. There is also a PIT tag antenna affixed to the weir allowing detection of PIT tagged fish. There are three datasets currently associated with this project, 1) passage data for all O. mykiss from 2005 through 2025, 2) O. mykiss that were captured and processed from the trap, and 3) PIT tag detections from the PIT antenna.

Monitoring adult Chinook salmon upstream passage on Yuba River

Adult salmonid data on the Yuba River is collected and managed by the Yuba Water Agency and the California Department of Water Resources. Upstream passage data is collected year-round at Daguerre Point Dam, 24 hours a day and 7 days a week. Data from this monitoring is modeled by Brian Poxon and Paul Bratovich to produce estimates of adult escapement (upstream passage) abundance. These data will also be used to inform the development of a juvenile production estimate (JPE) for spring-run Chinook salmon in the Sacramento River Watershed.

Darwin Core Archive: Santa Barbara Channel fish surveys at deep reefs: Footprint, Piggy Bank, Anacapa Passage

The dataset contains fish surveys from deep natural reefs in the northern Santa Barbara Channel Islands, Southern California, mainly at reefs named Piggy Bank, Footprint (local names) and Anacapa Passage. Data collection began in 1995. Reefs are located at depths between 30 and 360 m (100 and 1,180 feet). Sampling was by the manned submersibles Delta and DualDeepworker and an unmanned Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV). These sites included a wide range of such habitats as banks, ridges, and carbonate reefs, ranging in size from a few kilometers in length to less than a hectare in area. On these features, we focused on hard bottom macrohabitats, including kelp beds, boulder and cobble fields, and bedrock outcrops. Transects were not deliberately revisited; some reefs were surveyed as many as four times per year. All transects are 2 m wide; transect length varied (see data). Fishes were identified to lowest possible taxon (usually species), and verified against the WoRMs database (http://www.marinespecies.org/). This dataset is formatted as a Darwin Core Archive (DwC-A, occurrence core). This is a derived data product and see provenance for the source data.

Facilitated migration could bolster migrant passage through anthropogenically altered ecosystems

<p>Anthropogenic habitat change frequently outpaces the adaptive capacity of migratory taxa, placing many species and populations at risk of extirpation or extinction due to the mismatch of natural migration phenology and suitable conditions. While dynamic protection can greatly benefit migratory species, it is contingent on the flexibility of relevant management actions. For regulated ecosystems where advanced management planning is required, we present a framework—facilitated migration—for actively matching natural migration phenology with suitable conditions for successful migrant passage. Using a case study of juvenile Chinook salmon (<em>Oncorhynchus tshawytscha</em>) oceanward migration in the Sacramento River, a major bottleneck to the recovery of imperiled populations in California, we show how the conditions associated with migration preparation, migration initiation, and successful migrant passage could be regulated to benefit migrants. Thermally shifted preparation, flow pulse-mediated initiation, and passage protection via increased flow, all accomplished by controlling the release of water from storage reservoirs, could increase the number of wild-origin Chinook salmon populations successfully migrating to the ocean by at least 18-212% compared to the status quo management scenario. To further inform expected outcomes, we find that the temporal scope and diversity of juvenile salmon lifestages studied via acoustic telemetry should be expanded, and that the range of flows and flow changes that juvenile salmon experience should be increased. Facilitated migration works by synchronizing migration—thus, a prudent course of action when implementing this strategy would be to favor event quality over event quantity. In forcing scientists and managers to critically evaluate how migrations can be supported and manipulated, facilitated migration will help migratory species persist in anthropogenically altered ecosystems.</p>
