Hope Pedagogies in Times of Crises: a Cross-Cultural Study
<p>This dataset contains photographs, survey responses and students self-narratives by 235 students aged 10-15 in three schools located in Argentina, Italy and Uruguay. Additionally, 13 interviews with members of the educational team were conducted. In short, this dataset contains:</p> <ul> <li>98 photographs were taken upon the completion of 3 workshops focused on sustainability. Students were requested to take one photo that represented "What is sustainability for me?".</li> <li>107 student raw survey responses for 53 questions.</li> <li>218 Students' self-narratives that responded to the question "What will my life and community look like in 20 years time?" </li> </ul> <p>NB: Due to storage limitations, photographs and students' self-narratives have been compressed. I can share better quality files upon request.</p>
Replication Package of Pandemic Pedagogy: Evaluating Remote Education Strategies during COVID-19
<p>The COVID-19 pandemic precipitated an abrupt shift in the educational landscape, compelling universities to transition from in-person to online instruction. This sudden shift left many university instructors grappling with the intricacies of remote teaching. Now, with the pandemic behind us, we present a retrospective study aimed at understanding and evaluating the remote teaching practices employed during that period. Drawing from a cross-sectional analysis of 300 computer science students who underwent a full year of online education during the lockdown, our findings indicate that while remote teaching practices moderately influenced students' learning outcomes, they had a pronounced positive impact on student satisfaction. Remarkably, these outcomes were consistent across various demographics, including country, gender, and educational level. As we reflect on the lessons from this global event, this research offers evidence-based recommendations that could inform educational strategies in unwelcoming future scenarios of a similar nature, ensuring both student satisfaction and effective learning outcomes in online settings.</p>
Data from: The evolutionary origins of natural pedagogy: Rhesus monkeys show sustained attention following nonsocial cues versus social communicative signals
<p>The natural pedagogy hypothesis proposes that human infants preferentially attend to communicative signals from others, facilitating rapid cultural learning. In this view, sensitivity to such signals are a uniquely human adaptation and as such nonhuman animals should not produce or utilize these communicative signals. We test these evolutionary predictions by examining sensitivity to communicative cues in 206 rhesus monkeys (<i>Macaca mulatta</i>) using an expectancy looking time task modeled on prior work with infants. Monkeys observed a human actor who either made eye contact and vocalized to the monkey (<i>social cue</i>), or waved a fruit in front of her face and produced a tapping sound (<i>nonsocial cue</i>). The actor then either looked at an object (<i>referential look</i>) or looked towards empty space (<i>look away</i>). We found that, unlike human infants in analogous situations, rhesus monkeys looked longer at events following nonsocial cues, regardless of the demonstrator's subsequent looking behavior. Moreover, younger and older monkeys showed similar patterns of responses across development. These results provide support for the natural pedagogy hypothesis, while also highlighting evolutionary changes in human sensitivity to communicative signals.</p>

Teaching the process of science with primary literature: Using the CREATE pedagogy in ecological courses
<p>There have been numerous calls for improved pedagogical practices in biological education, and there is a clear need for such improvements in ecology and related curricula. Most ecology-related texts lack pedagogy and are designed to be content-rich. National initiatives, such as Vision & Change, provide guidance on undergraduate biology education, including increasing use of evidence-based active learning, and taking a more conceptual and science practice skills approach. Biology education research is rich with evidence-based teaching practices, which reveal that active learning approaches implemented in thoughtful ways lead to strong learning gains relative to lecture-based course delivery. CREATE (Consider, Read, Elucidate the hypothesis, Analyze and interpret data, Think of the next Experiment) integrates evidence-based active pedagogical practices into one approach to STEM education that focuses heavily on the process of science and science practice skills rather than content delivery by replacing the textbook with selected journal articles. The approach focuses on deep reading and analysis of primary literature; immersing students in the literature is an advantage of the pedagogy. CREATE was developed and tested in other biological disciplines (genetics, molecular biology) that have long been at the forefront of pedagogical best practices in biology. We transformed two upper-level undergraduate ecological courses (Conservation Biology & Biodiversity and Ecology) into CREATE courses. We provide examples of assignments, student work, and assessments of the approach, illustrating the various ways CREATE can be successfully implemented. The approach can be adopted in part, to ease into it and test it out, or in whole. We recommend that ecology teachers consider making their courses more active if they have not already done so; adopting pedagogical practices embedded within CREATE can be a way to achieve active learning. The CREATE approach and other evidence-based pedagogical best practices lead to strong learning gains and more inclusive learning environments.</p>

Pedagogy of success: Perception in undergraduate and postgraduate students at a Peruvian university
<p><strong>Background:</strong> the objective of the study was to compare whether there are differences in the perception of undergraduate and postgraduate students about the pedagogy of success. <strong>Methods</strong>: This is non-experimental research with a comparative descriptive design, and a hypothetical deductive method was used. The Perception of Success Pedagogy questionnaire was applied as a data collection technique with a sample of fifty university students with 23 items based on three dimensions: Opportunity to learn (9 items), Feedback (8 items), and Consideration of the person. (6 items), with the following qualitative value scale: Always, Sometimes, and Never; the scale of quantitative value was from two to zero. To find the instrument's validity, it was subjected to expert judgment, calculating the content validity ratio for each item and considering the criteria of clarity and relevance. The instrument's reliability was determined using Cronbach's alpha, a high consistency between the items. For the questionnaire application, Google Forms was used to obtain fast, timely, and reliable answers. The data were processed through the SPSS V. 25. <strong>Results:</strong> the pedagogical support of postgraduate Teaching is superior to that of the undergraduate level; however, the undergraduate teacher stands out in listening and empathizing with the students. <strong>Conclusions:</strong> There are significant differences in the perception of the pedagogy of success among undergraduate and postgraduate university students; therefore, the application of this methodology is more promoted towards postgraduate students than to their undergraduate peers.</p>
