<p>The theory and research on learning in higher education are pointing out that active methods are able to improve learners’ performance more than passive ones and to trigger situated and deep learning. However, some factors prevent their spread and trust amongst university instructors, like their complex logistics in large size lectures. Indeed, in academic crowded classes these interactive-engagement methodologies are sporadically employed and seem to be rarely successful. In this context, in the academic years 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 we carried out a quasi-experiment at Politecnico di Milano aimed at investigating the effectiveness of the integration of peer learning activities, strengthened by the use of technology, into traditional Physics lectures as a teaching method in large size classes. Data related to both an experimental and a control group were gathered and analysed through descriptive and inferential statistics; Shapiro-Wilk, Levene, Mann-Whitney U, Wilcoxon signed-rank and Kruskal-Wallis tests were employed. Our combined strategy appears to be effective with relation to learning Physics and more successful than traditional courses centred on academic lectures, regardless of the difficulty of the issues investigated. Virtual peer teaching in the anatomy lab
<p>Peer teaching is a powerful educational tool utilized in medical school curricula. Previously, first-year medical students taught their peers about the gross anatomical structures they had dissected in the anatomy lab. While this strategy provided an opportunity for students to learn from one another, there were unintended outcomes including difficulty engaging all students in the exercise. In light of these observations, along with the need to limit student numbers in the lab as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, a strategy was developed in which students could conduct their anatomy peer teaching in a virtual environment. The goal was to establish an effective and efficient means for students to teach and learn from one another in a virtual setting. Here, students, working in groups of 4 members, were tasked with the following: 1) Find and label 4-5 assigned structures on cadaver-based images; 2) Provide a rationale for labeling; 3) Discuss something relevant about the structure; 4) Prepare a 5-minute video presentation of steps 1-3; and 5) Review and provide meaningful feedback on another group's video presentation. While students performed well on these assignments, feedback from students indicated several drawbacks such as excess time editing their videos, concerns about the validity of the information provided by their peers, and the timing of peer teaching to be non-conducive to learning. Although the students viewed the virtual peer teaching negatively, we were successful in developing a platform in which students participated more equally in peer teaching. Recommendations to those considering this platform include careful consideration of the timing of peer teaching activities and faculty feedback as well as the technology used.</p>

Qualification and teaching of peer-student tutors in undergraduate medical education: Does it affect the understanding and acquiring of CanMEDS competencies?
<p><strong><span>Objective: </span></strong><span><span>The Canadian Medical Education Directives for Specialists (CanMEDS), described by scientists of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, specify the competencies that medical students should acquire during their studies of human medicine. These include the skills of Medical Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Manager, Professional, Health Advocate and Scholar. We investigated the opinion of former student tutors that are currently active as clinical residents to understand whether they acquired and applied the CanMEDS competencies more during their student tutoring activities or during their undergraduate medical training. </span></span></p> <p><b><span>Methods:</span></b><span> An online questionnaire with closed and open questions were distributed to residents with work experience as student tutors. A Likert scale was used to assess the relevance of each CanMEDS competency to their current employment and to evaluate the acquisition and application of each CanMEDS competency during undergraduate medical </span><span>training in comparison to their peer-student tutor employment. We used the sign test for identify </span><span>significant differences in the acquisition and application of CanMEDS competencies. </span></p> <p><b><span>Results</span></b><i><span>:<b> </b></span></i><span>Of one hundred and twenty-three tutors, twenty-four met the inclusion criteria and fourteen questionnaires were returned. Concerning acquiring the CanMEDS roles Collaborator, Communicator, Professional and Manager there was a significant difference in favour of peer-student tutor employment. Nearly all participants indicated that they noticed a general benefit </span><span>from having worked </span><span>as peer-student tutors.</span></p> <p><b>Conclusion:<i> </i></b>We found that employment as a peer-student tutor is beneficial for the respondents in general and for the acquisition and application of several CanMEDS roles in particular.</p>
