Carbohydrate depletion in roots impedes phosphorus nutrition of forest trees

<p>The aim of the study was to determine the effect of belowground plant-derived carbohydrates on P uptake, P concentrations and enzymes activities related to P mobilization in roots, ectomycorrhizas and soil and on the abundances of P-related genes in soil bacteria.</p> <p>We report data from a girdling experiment in two temperate beech forest with contrasting soil phosphorus concentrations. We used soil cores and the fractions of the organic layer and mineral topsoil separately one and eight weeks after the girdling treatment. We collected bulk soil, rhizosphere and root. We provide data on soil for pH, water extractable organic carbon mineral elements in soil, and soil enzyme activities. Enzyme activities are shown for the bulk soil and the rhizosphere We provide data for microbial P, microbial biomass, gene abundances of P-related genes for soil bacteria, and phospholipid fatty acids. We provide data on root biomass, carbohydrates, total P, soluble, other root mineral nutrients, and phopphatase and enzyme activities. The data set further contain 33P labelling data for P uptake into roots.</p>

Phosphorus nutrition strategies in a symbiodiniacean species: Implications in coral-alga symbiosis facing increasing phosphorus deficiency in future warmer oceans

<p><span>Coral reefs thrive in the oligotrophic ocean and rely on symbiotic algae to acquire nutrients. </span><span>Global warming is projected to intensify surface ocean nutrient deficiency and anthropogenic discharge of wastes with high nitrogen (N): phosphorus (P) ratios can exacerbate P nutrient limitation. However, our understanding on how symbiotic algae cope with P deficiency is limited. Here, we </span><span>investigated the responses of a coral symbiotic species of <em>Symbiodiniaceae, Cladocopium goreaui</em>, to P-limitation by examining its physiological performance and transcriptomic profile. </span><span>Under P stress, <em>C. goreaui</em> exhibited decreases in algal growth, photosynthetic efficiency, and cellular P content but enhancement in carbon fixation, N assimilation, N:P ratio, and energy metabolism, with downregulated expression of carbohydrate exporter genes. Besides, <em>C. goreaui </em>showed flexible mechanisms of utilizing different dissolved organic phosphorus to relieve P deficiency. When provided glycerol phosphate,<em> C. goreaui</em> hydrolyzed it extracellularly to produce phosphate for uptake. When grown on phytate, in contrast, <em>C. goreaui</em> upregulated the endocytosis pathway while no dissolved inorganic phosphorus was released into the medium, suggesting that phytate was transported into the cell, potentially via the endocytosis pathway. This study sheds light on the survival strategies of <em>C. goreaui</em> and potential weakening of its role as an organic carbon supplier in P-limited environments, underscoring the importance of more systematic investigation on future projections of such effects.</span></p>

Data from: Soil carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus stoichiometry (C:N:P) in relation to conifer species productivity and nutrition across British Columbia perhumid rainforests

<p>Temperate rainforest soils of the Pacific Northwest are often carbon (C) rich and encompass a wide range in fertility reflecting varying nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) availability.  Soil resource stoichiometry (C:N:P) may provide an effective measure of site nutrient status and help refine species-dependent patterns in forest productivity across edaphic gradients.  We described the nature of soil organic matter for mineral soil and forest floor substrates across very wet (perhumid) rainforest sites of southwestern Vancouver Island (Canada), and employed soil element ratios as covariates in a long-term planting density trial to test their utility in defining basal area growth response of four conifer species.  There were strong positive correlations in mineral soil C, N and organic P (Po) concentrations, and close alignment in C:N and C:Po both among and between substrates.  Stand basal area after five decades was best reflected by soil C:N but included a significant species-soil interaction.  The conifers with ectomycorrhizal fungi had diverging growth responses displaying either competitive (<i>Picea sitchensis</i>) or stress-tolerant (<i>Tsuga heterophylla</i>, <i>Pseudotsuga menziesii</i>) attributes, in contrast to a more generalist response by an arbuscular mycorrhizal tree (<i>Thuja plicata</i>).  Despite the consistent patterns in organic matter quality we found no evidence via foliar nutrition for increased P availability with declining element ratios as we did for N.  The often high C:Po ratios (as much as 3000) of these soils may reflect a stronger immobilization sink for P than N, which, along with ongoing sorption of PO4-, could limit the utility of C:Po or N:Po to adequately reflect P supply.  The dynamics and availability of soil P to trees, particularly as Po, deserves greater attention as many perhumid rainforests were co-limited by N and P, or, in some stands, possibly P alone. </p>
