BSNE aeolian dust collector sample weights from the three ConMod Pilot study locations at Jornada Basin LTER, 2008-2016

This data package contains measurements of dust collected by BSNE collectors for the Connectivity Modifier (ConMod) Pilot study plots from 2008-2016 on the Jornada Experimental Range. There were 3 sites for this study: Gravelly Ridges, Aeolian, and Dona Ana. Within each site, there were 8 plots. The plots are 8 x 8 meters and have an 8 x 8 buffer zone on both sides of the plot (up and down). There are four BSNE (aeolian dust collector) stands for each plot, 2 in each of the 2 buffer zones (8 collectors per plot). Each stand contains 2 BSNE collectors at a 30cm height with the collection opening at 10cm x 2 cm wide x 5 cm height. These BSNE collectors are in a fixed position pointing into the direction of the prevailing wind, which corresponds to the plot alignment. The collectors in the upwind buffer are facing away from the plot and the collectors in the downwind buffer are facing into the plot. Upwind BSNEs collect the amount of dust entering the plot, and the downwind BSNEs collect the amount of dust moving off the plot. These collectors estimate the effectiveness of the plot surface in obstructing wind blown dust. This study is complete (finished in 2016) and was the pilot study to the newer Cross Scale Interactions Study.

Automated monitoring of biodiversity in the tropics: A pilot study at Barro Colorado Island

Automated monitoring of biodiversity using camera systems and acoustic devises is becoming increasingly common practise. The development of camera traps for insects, however, is relatively new, and has not been tested in tropical environments. To understand both the challenges and opportunities for automated monitoring in the tropics we deployed three newly developed cameras systems for monitoring insects, with a focus on night-flying insects. In addition we deployed audible and ultrasound recording equipment. The locations of each device was changed over the 5 day pilot study, and the configuration of each system was changed to allow an assessment of the relative importance of position, light, etc. The study was undertaken on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, in January 2023.

Data are aggregated into .zip files, and details of their contents, and metadata are given in read_me.txt and metadata.csv.

We report on the pilot assessment of the feasibility of the USE-ME tool with master students in computer science which were involved into a DSL course. In total there were four groups consisted of two or three participants which were developing the following DSLs:

DSL Spreadsheets - a DSL transforms an activity graph into a Gantt chart. The target users of this DSL are to be project managers.

Gestures Kinect - a DSL which supports specification of communication between navy users using a Kinect device. The target users of this DSL are to be a navy operators.

Peddy Paper - a DSL which creates several instances of personalised paddy papers. The target users are paddy paper builders.

Smart House - a DSL which supports a design of the elements and operations that the house can have. It is meant to be used by house owners.

The evaluation consisted of three learning session. The first one took place after four weeks of the DSL development. Students were introduced to the usability evaluation during a 2h theoretical lecture. For next 2h were introduced with the USE-ME tool and were guided to perform installation and set up working environment. Also, the students were given a participation questionnaire to fill in and describe a purpose of their DSL. In the end of a session, they were given the background questionnaire to fill till the following session which was happening 1 week after. Following two weekly 4h sessions were consisting of USE-ME hands on. The students were introduced to the modelling activities followed by Visualino example. For each activity, the same student from the group was using the tool to create USE-ME models for their DSL, while other students from the group were helping in deciding what would be a right specification. Finally, students were asked to try to finish the learned models and deliver them as a part of DSL course. After delivery, the students which were using the tool to model were asked to fill in a feedback questionnaire.

The evaluation deliveries related to each DSL (project reports, USE-ME models), and ones related to participants (background and feedback questionnaire), as well as evaluation results, are attached in this data set.

Pilot study: Ranking of textual snippets based on the writing style

In this pilot study, we tried to capture humans' behavior when identifying authorship of text snippets. At first, we selected textual snippets from the introduction of scientific articles written by single authors. Later, we presented to the evaluators a source and four target snippets, and then, ask them to rank the target snippets from the most to the least similar from the writing style.

The dataset is composed by 66 experiments manually checked for not having any clear hint during the ranking for the evaluators. For each experiment, we have evaluations from three different evaluators.

We present each experiment in a single line (in the CSV file), where, at first we present the metadata of the Source-Article (Journal, Title, Authorship, Snippet), and the metadata for the 4 target snippets (Journal, Title, Authorship, Snippet, Written From the same Author, Published in the same Journal) and the ranking given by each evaluator. This task was performed in the open source platform, Crowd Flower.

The headers of the CSV are self-explained. In the TXT file, you can find a human-readable version of the experiment.

For more information about the extraction of the data, please consider reading our paper: "Extending Scientific Literature Search by Including the Author’s Writing Style" @BIR: http://www.gesis.org/en/services/events/events-archive/conferences/ecir-workshops/ecir-workshop-2017
