PIE LTER surface elevation table (SET) pin height data from twelve marsh sites in northeast Massachusetts.

Surface elevation table (SET) measurements from 26 SETs at 9 marsh sites in the Plum Island Sound Long-Term Ecological Research Site in the Great Marsh, Massachusetts. SET measurements are useful for determining the relative elevation change of marsh sediments. Precise measurements of sediment elevation in marshes is useful for determining rates of elevation change in response to changes in sea level.

FAIR Data Package of a Tribological Showcase Pin-on-Disk Experiment

To assess the feasibility of producing FAIR data via the integration of a controlled vocabulary, an ontology, and an ELN, this dataset demonstrates the implementation of a tribological experiment while accounting for as many details as possible. The showcase experiment had a lubricated pin-on-disk arrangement, ran at 15 N normal load and a velocity range of 20 to 170 mm/s. With this dataset, we hope to provide a possible blueprint for FAIR data publication in experimental tribology.

https://www.nature.com/articles/s41597-022-01429-9 - Garabedian, N.T., Schreiber, P.J., Brandt, N., Greiner, C., et al.

Quick start with the dataset in README.txt (included in the newest version of the dataset)

Abstract: Generating FAIR research data in experimental tribology. Sci Data 9, 315 (2022). Digital solutions for the generation of FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reusable) data and metadata in experimental tribology are currently lacking, despite the looming challenge of integrating cutting-edge data science techniques – a promising scientific route for any field that often relies on phenomenology and empiricism. Additionally, the broad interdisciplinarity of tribology is probably a main contributing factor for the lack of community-wide data and metadata standards, and the heavy reliance on custom workflows and equipment. This paper, first, outlines a sample framework for scalable generation of FAIR data, and second, delivers a showcase FAIR data package for a pin-on-disk tribological experiment. The resulting curated data, consisting of 2,008 key-value pairs and 1,696 logical axioms, is the result of (1) the close collaboration with developers of a virtual research environment, (2) crowd-sourced controlled vocabulary, (3) ontology building and (4) numerous – seemingly – small-scale digital tools. Thereby, this paper demonstrates a collection of scalable non-intrusive techniques that extend the life, reliability and reusability of experimental tribological data beyond typical publication practices.

https://youtu.be/xwCpRDnPFvs - Generating FAIR Research Data in Experimental Tribology - Get Scientific Results Ready for ML

https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5720626 - FAIR Data Package of a Tribological Showcase Pin-on-Disk Experiment

https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5720198 or https://github.com/nick-garabedian/TriboDataFAIR-Ontology or https://fairsharing.org/3597 - TriboDataFAIR Ontology

https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5720218 or https://github.com/nick-garabedian/SurfTheOWL - SurfTheOWL

https://kadi4mat.iam-cms.kit.edu/ - Kadi4Mat Virtual Research Environment and Electronic Lab Notebook

Surface Elevation Table (SET) data (pin heights) from control and fertilized plots at Spartina alterniflora, S. patens and Typha sp. marshes, Plum Island Ecosystems LTER, MA (1999-2025).

A Surface Elevation Table (SET) is used to measure changes in the elevation of the marsh surface at three long term marsh fertilization experimental research sites. The sites include one Typha-dominated brackish marsh, one Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh, and one S. patens-dominated salt marsh. Sites are located on the Rowley and upper Parker Rivers in the Plum Island Ecosystems (PIE) LTER site.

Pinning and movement of individual nanoscale magnetic skyrmions via defects

An understanding of the pinning of magnetic skyrmions to defects is crucial for the development of
future spintronic applications. While pinning is desirable for a precise positioning of magnetic
skyrmions it is detrimental when they are to be moved through a material.Weuse scanning tunneling
microscopy (STM) to study the interaction between atomic scale defects and magnetic skyrmions that
are only a few nanometers in diameter. The studied pinning centers range from single atom inlayer
defects and adatoms to clusters adsorbed on the surface of our model system.Wefind very different
pinning strengths and identify preferred positions of the skyrmion. The interaction between a cluster
and a skyrmion can be sufficiently strong for the skyrmion to follow when the cluster is moved across
the surface by lateral manipulation with the STMtip.

Raw pin-hit data from 19 1m x 1m point frame plots sampled near the LTER Shrub plots at Toolik Field Station in AK the summer of 2012.

This dataset includes every pin-hit recorded from 19 1m x 1m point frame plots of tall Betula nana and Salix pulchra canopies sampled at the Toolik Field Station, AK the summer of 2012. Twenty-five evenly spaced holes within the plot were sampled for each point frame for which the height and species was recorded for each leaf, stem, or plant that intersected the pin when lowered perpendicular to the ground. Non-woody species were grouped into functional groups (e.g. forb, graminoid, moss) and not identified to species. Stem diameter and the length of gramminoid blades were also recorded.

Revealing the microscopic mechanism of vortex pinning in superconductors

Vortex pinning is a crucial factor that determines the critical current of practical superconductors, but its microscopic mechanism has long been elusive. Here using high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, we studied the pinning of single vortex by point defect in high-Tc FeSe-based superconductors. We found the defect-vortex interaction drives low-energy vortex bound states away from EF, which effectively lowered the energy of vortex and caused the pinning. It indicates the local pairing near the pinned vortex core is actually enhanced, which is in sharp contrast to the traditional understanding that non-superconducting regions pin the vortex, but is well captured by our microscopic quantum model. Furthermore, we directly obtained the elementary pinning energy from tunneling spectrum and estimated the pinning force via the spatial gradient of pinning energy. The obtained value aligns with the bulk critical current measurement. Our study thus established a general microscopic mechanism of vortex pinning in superconductors.
