The recovery of plant community composition following passive restoration across spatial scales, Cedar Creek Ecosystem Science Reserve, 1983-2016
1. Human impacts have led to dramatic biodiversity change which can be highly scale-dependent across space and time. A primary means to manage these changes is via passive (here, the removal of disturbance) or active (management interventions) ecological restoration. The recovery of biodiversity, following the removal of disturbance is often incomplete relative to some kind of reference target. The magnitude of recovery of ecological systems following disturbance depend on the landscape matrix, as well as the temporal and spatial scales at which biodiversity is measured. 2. We measured the recovery of biodiversity and species composition over 27 years in 17 temperate grasslands abandoned after agriculture at different points in time, collectively forming a chronosequence since abandonment from one to eighty years. We compare these abandoned sites with known agricultural land-use histories to never-disturbed sites as relative benchmarks. We specifically measured aspects of diversity at the local plot-scale (α-scale, 0.5m2) and site-scale (γ-scale, 10m2), as well as the within-site heterogeneity (β-diversity) and among-site variation in species composition (turnover and nestedness). 3. At our α-scale, sites recovering after agricultural abandonment only had 70% of the plant species richness (and ~30% of the evenness), compared to never-ploughed sites. Within-site β-diversity recovered following agricultural abandonment to around 90% after 80 years. This effect, however, was not enough to lead to recovery at our γ-scale. Richness in recovering sites was ~65% of that in remnant never-ploughed sites. The presence of species characteristic of the never disturbed sites increased in the recovering sites through time. Forb and legume cover declines in years since abandonment, relative to graminoid cover across sites. 4. Synthesis. The experience base of the Institute of Soil Science, Agrotechnologies and Plant Protection in the town of Bozhurishte, region Sofia - on an area of 7.2 decares - First experiment

The plot data are stored in the sPlot database (PPBio South Brazilian Grassland Database).</p> <p>File <a href="../api/records/10983049/draft/files/E_990ua_21SoilVar.txt/content" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">E_990ua_21SoilVar.txt</a> contains data on soil variables evaluated in the 250 m transects, but here expanded to the 990 1-m2 plots (each transect was sampled using 10 1-m2 pots).</p> <p>File <a href="../api/records/10983049/draft/files/B_769spp_4t.txt/content" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer">B_769spp_4t.txt</a> is the species trait database collected in the framework of several research projects in the Quantitative Ecology Lab (EcoQua) and Grassland Vegetation Studies Lab (LevCamp) of Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Improving citizen science data for long-term monitoring of plant species
<p>In 2012, a new volunteer-based recording scheme for vascular plants was launched in the Netherlands. Its purpose is to track the changes in the number of occupied 1-km grid cells for as many native plant species as possible between survey rounds of 8 years. We did not prescribe a strict field protocol to minimize variation in observer effort, but instead chose to statistically correct for this variation with occupancy models. These models require replicated visits to a grid cell per season, which was implemented by having two independent observers survey grid cells and record all plant species observed. Now that a first survey round has ended (2012–2019), we evaluate our approach, i.e. we tested whether the scheme has the potential to produce proper trend estimates. The number of occupied grid cells in the first round was estimated per species, using an occupancy model with day of year, visit duration and observer experience as covariates for detection. The detection probability, which was 0.43 on average, strongly depended on visit duration and day of year. It was possible to estimate the number of occupied grid cells quite precisely for several hundreds of species, such that the statistical power is expected to be high enough to detect changes of 10% between survey rounds. For rare species, however, the power to detect changes is expected to be quite low. We conclude that the approach works well, but further improvements are suggested.</p>
[DATA_SCIENCE] Interviews Plant Phenomics, 2015
<p>Here are two transcripts from a set of interviews executed by Sabina Leonelli in the fall of 2015 as part of the ERC project "The Epistemology of Data-Intensive Science", and in the context of a case study of phenotyping practices at the National Plant Phenomics Centre in Aberystwyth and collaborators. The transcripts document researchers' experience of data curation practices. Researchers have consented to have these transcripts made available as Open Data. Other interviewees did not give consent or ended up providing sensitive information in their interviews, so those transcripts cannot be made open and are held securely by the research team in Exeter. You also find the information sheet provided to interviewees, which gives you the context for this project. Further information can be found at <a href="http://www.datastudies.eu">www.datastudies.eu</a>. The transcripts have been redacted to exclude names of people who have not given consent to participate in the study, but have otherwise been left unedited and therefore contain several colloquial expressions. A paper by Sabina Leonelli which specifically makes use of these interviews will be published in 2019 in the European Journal for Philosophy of Science, under the title “What Distinguishes Data from Models?”. <p><span></span></p> <p>These data are associated with the study entitled "<em>A critical analysis of plant science literature reveals ongoing inequities</em>" by Rose A. Marks, Erik J. Amézquita, Sarah Percival, Alejandra Rougon-Cardoso, Claudia Chibici-Revneanu, Shandry M. Tebele, Jill M. Farrant, Daniel H. Chitwood, and Robert VanBuren published in PNAS, 2023. The data deposited here include 296,447 plant science papers published between 2000 to 2021 that were sourced from a representative set of 127 plant science journals based in 26 different nations across 5 continents, covering 21 different subspecialties. Both society and for-profit journals are included, with open access, hybrid, and subscription publishing models. </p>

Asimismo, se identificaron los sustratos de anidación, se revisaron todos los árboles e infraestructura del Campus Agropecuario y se muestrearon las arvenses y arbusto en floración entre los meses de abril a octubre del 2022. </p>
