Undirected Node Attributed Social Network Graph of Twitter Users interested in plastic pollution - created in the framework of the PlasticTwist project
<p>This dataset has been created in the framework of the Plastic Twist project (<a href="https://ptwist.eu/">Ptwist</a>) and more specifically using the Ptwist crowdsourcing application (<a href="https://crowdsourcing.plastictwist.com/">crowdsourcing.plastictwist.com/</a>). We are sharing the edge list and specific node attributes (hashtags) of Twitter users posting about plastic pollution. The dataset can be used for community detection,clustering, node importance, influence maximization tasks, etc. Each user is represented by a unique integer which has nothing to do with the official Twitter user ID. The dataset contains three (3) files: </p> <ul> <li>ptwist.edgelist: A list containing all the 1,362,863 edges between the users. When loaded they create an undirected graph of 800K+ users.</li> <li>node_attributes.txt: This file contains information about the hashtags used by each user. (e.g. "652003": ["SingleUsePlastic"] -> user 6529003 has used the hashtag SingleUsePlastic) </li> <li>annotated_graph: A pickle file which, when loaded, returns a <a href="https://networkx.github.io/">NetworkX</a> node attributed undirected graph.</li> </ul> <p> </p> <p> </p>
Demographic factors and the environmental Kuznets curve: global plastic pollution by 2050 could be 2 to 4 times worse than projected
<p>These data are made of two files. One file provides the observed data we collected and cleaned from the World Bank database. The second file provides the simulation results from the STIRPAT model we designed based on the observed data abovementioned. Our results can be summarised as follows:</p> <p>Since 2015, the detrimental effects of plastic pollution have attracted media, public, and governmental attention. Considering economic growth is inevitable and a key driver of plastic contamination, it is worthwhile to analyze the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) relationship between economic development and plastic pollution. To this end, we contribute by being the first to (i) use the Stochastic Impacts by Regression on Population, Affluence, and technology model (STIRPAT model) to investigate this EKC relationship; (ii) provide a comprehensive analysis of how demographic factors affect plastic pollution; and (iii) use panel model techniques to examine the drivers of plastic pollution. Our empirical results support an inverted U-shaped relationship between plastic pollution and income. They show that at current trends, global plastic pollution (that is, annual discard of inadequately managed plastic waste) is expected to grow from 52 million tons per year in 2020 to 257 million tons per year in 2050.</p>
Sex-specific effects of psychoactive pollution on behavioural individuality and plasticity in fish
<p>The global rise of pharmaceutical contaminants in the aquatic environment poses a serious threat to ecological and evolutionary processes. Studies have traditionally focused on the collateral (average) effects of psychoactive pollutants on ecologically-relevant behaviours of wildlife, often neglecting effects among and within individuals, and whether they differ between males and females. We tested whether psychoactive pollutants have sex-specific effects on behavioural individuality and plasticity in guppies (<em>Poecilia</em> <em>reticulata</em>), a freshwater species that inhabits contaminated waterways in the wild. Fish were exposed to fluoxetine (Prozac) for two years across multiple generations before their activity and stress-related behaviour were repeatedly assayed. Using a Bayesian statistical approach that partitions the effects among and within individuals, we found that males—but not females—in fluoxetine-exposed populations differed less from each other in their behaviour (lower behavioural individuality) than unexposed males. In sharp contrast, effects on behavioural plasticity were observed in females—but not in males—whereby exposure to even low levels of fluoxetine resulted in a substantial decrease (activity) and increase (freezing behaviour) in the behavioural plasticity of females. Our evidence reveals that psychoactive pollution has sex-specific effects on the individual behaviour of fish, suggesting that males and females might not be equally vulnerable to global pollutants.</p>

Plastic pollution within "The Gully" Marine Protected Area of the Scotian Shelf, Northwest Atlantic
<p>This dataset contains information on plastic particle densities, characteristics (colour, morphology), size, and polymer types collected from seawater in "The Gully" Marine Protected Area between 1990 and 2019. Also included are the characteristics, sizes, and polymer types of ingested debris removed from the stomachs of two Endangered northern bottlenose whales (<em>Hyperoodon ampullatus</em>) stranded in Canada in 2019 and 2021. Data to support "Plastic Rivers project: Consumer-Based Actions to Reduce Plastic Pollution in Rivers: a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis Approach"
Focusing on the most commonly occurring consumer plastic items present in European freshwater environments, we identified and evaluated consumer-based actions with respect to their direct or indirect potential to reduce macroplastic pollution in freshwater environments. As the main end users of these items, concerned consumers are faced with a bewildering array of choices to reduce their plastics footprint, notably through recycling or using reusable items. Using a Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis approach, we explored the effectiveness of 27 plastic reduction actions with respect to their feasibility, economic impacts, environmental impacts, unintended social/environmental impacts, potential scale of change and evidence of impact. Total action scores have been calculated using a multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) on 27 plastic reduction actions identified though a literature review. Each of the total action scores is the weighted sum of 1-5 scores (assigned to each of ten criteria to assess the positive environmental impact of each action, based on the literature review) and % weights of each criterion to rank their relative importance. We provide two tables in csv format: 1) the % weights assigned by 15 experts to rank the relative importance of socio-economic and environmental criteria to assess plastic reduction actions; 2) the 1-5 scores assigned to each of the ten criteria in relation to each of the 27 actions; the median weights for each of the ten criteria calculated from 1); and the total action scores of each of the 27 actions calculated as weighted sum (e.g. TAS action 1: sum of ten products of % criterion weight * 1-5 scores assigned to each combination criterion - plastic reduction action).

Animal personalities, as defined by repeatable among individual differences in behavior, can vary across urbanization gradients. However, how urbanization affects personalities remains incompletely understood, especially because different urban stressors could affect personality traits in opposing ways, whereas most previous studies have considered only one urban disturbance factor. For instance, novel habitat features could favor reduced neophobia, whereas exposure to pollutants could increase risk sensitivity through neurotoxic or hormonal effects. To address this contingency, we studied object neophobia in four urban populations of great tits (Parus major) that vary in exposure to metal pollution and anthropogenic disturbance, as quantified by proximity to roads and pathways. We measured the return latency of incubating females when flushed from the nest and presented with up to two different novel objects, allowing quantification of behavioral repeatability and plasticity. To separate neophobia from sensitivity to disturbance, we also conducted baseline trials, in which females were flushed but no object was presented. We additionally measured exploration behavior and aggression (hissing) during nest defense, to explore whether suites of behaviors covary with urbanization, and examined whether neophobia affects reproductive success. Sensitivity to disturbance and neophobia were repeatable, and thus represent personality traits. Moreover, females occupying territories near roads and pathways had shorter return latencies during novel object but not baseline trials, suggesting a specific reduction in neophobia in disturbed areas. Plasticity in neophobia also increased with disturbance level. In contrast, metal exposure did not affect neophobia or sensitivity to disturbance, despite negatively correlating with exploration behavior. Neophobia correlated with exploration behavior, but not aggression or reproductive success. Results suggest that shifts in personality types in urbanized areas might involve specific reductions in neophobia, rather than general reductions in sensitivity to disturbance, and unexpectedly indicate no effect of toxic metals on risk sensitivity.
Endocrine disruption from plastic pollution and warming interact to increase the energetic cost of growth in a fish
<p>Energetic cost of growth determines how much food-derived energy is needed to produce a given amount of new biomass, and thereby influences energy transduction between trophic levels. Growth and development are regulated by hormones and are therefore sensitive to changes in temperature and environmental endocrine disruption. Here we show that the endocrine disruptor bisphenol A at an environmentally relevant concentration (BPA; 10 µg l⁻¹) decreased fish (<i>Danio rerio</i>) size at 30 <sup>o</sup>C water temperature. Under the same conditions, it significantly increased metabolic rates and the energetic cost of growth across development. In contrast, BPA decreased cost of growth at cooler temperatures (24 °C). BPA-mediated changes in cost of growth were not associated with mitochondrial efficiency (P/O ratios [i.e., ADP used/oxygen consumed] and respiratory control ratios) although BPA did increase mitochondrial proton leak. In females, BPA decreased age at maturity at 24 <sup>o</sup>C but increased it at 30 <sup>o</sup>C, and it decreased the gonadosomatic index suggesting reduced investment into reproduction. Our data reveal a potentially serious emerging problem: increasing water temperatures resulting from climate warming together with endocrine disruption from plastic pollution can impact animal growth efficiency, and hence the dynamics and resilience of animal populations and the services these provide.</p>
Supporting data of the Short communication: A multidisciplinary perspective on the role of plastic pollution in the triple planetary crisis - Paper under Review
<p>In our short communication, we discuss the role of plastics and associated chemicals in the triple planetary crisis of climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution from a multidisciplinary perspective. We utilize quantitative citation metrics (such as the number of papers, the number of reviews, and the fraction of reviews) to map the maturity of the research landscape for nano- and microplastics concerning their life cycle, release, fate, exposure, hazard, governance, and regulation. Based on the outcomes, we identify key research needs for a comprehensive hazard assessment of plastics and associated chemicals.</p> <p>This study was performed by an interest group at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig, Germany. Plastic Waste Pollution in Lorry Stations in Accra: Challenges and Solutions; An In-Depth Analysis and Action Plan
<p>This report aims to document the extent of plastic waste pollution in lorry stations in Accra, assess its impact on public health and propose actionable solutions for effective waste management in stations. By highlighting the severity of the issue as well as providing recommendations for solutions, we seek to inform and inspire municipal assemblies, policymakers and other stakeholders to take decisive action against plastic waste pollution in lorry stations in Accra. </p> <p>Plastic waste pollution is a growing concern in Ghana, with lorry stations being particularly affected due to high foot traffic and inadequate waste management infrastructure within stations. This report is significant because of its implications for addressing public health hazards, continuing the ongoing efforts to reduce plastic pollution in Ghana and addressing community concerns.
