Three sites (a Typha-dominated brackish marsh, a Spartina alterniflora-dominated salt marsh, and a S. patens-dominated salt marsh) are part of a long term study, and include fertilized and non-fertilized sample plots. Two additional, non-fertilized marsh sites, are located on Nelson Island, near Stackyard Road within the Parker River National Wildlife Refuge.

Wooden dowels were used to examine organic matter decomposition in salt- and brackish marsh soils. Dowels were inserted to a depth of 45cm in control and fertilized marsh plots. They were harvested after 3, 5 or 7 years and sectioned into 5-cm segments. Weight loss of the dowel segments was used to quantify the fate of labile organic matter while change in lignin content was used to quantify the fate of refractory organic matter.

Tissue from the organisms was analysed for del 13C and del 15N to determine if the treatment plant effluent del 15N signal could be detected in the biota of Greenwood Creek.
