Dataset of "Fast carbon dioxide–epoxide cycloaddition catalyzed by metal and metal-free ionic liquids for designing non-isocyanate polyurethanes"
<p>The recycling of industrially produced greenhouse gases, such as CO2, into high-value-added chemicals is one of the most relevant strategies for reaching climate targets. A two-step strategy for designing non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) from renewable carbon dioxide (CO2) using environmentally friendly conditions and catalysts is investigated. The first reaction step efficiently converts a mono-epoxidized monomer (phenyl glycidyl ether) into cyclic carbonates under mild reaction conditions and supercritical CO2, using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) as catalysts into cyclic carbonates. The DFT calculations suggested a comprehensive mechanistic pathway for the IL-catalyzed CO2-epoxy reaction showing a rate-determining step of the initial epoxide ring opening and the direct participation of IL-anions.</p>
Biobased Structurally Compatible Polymer Blends Based on Lignin and Thermoplastic Elastomer Polyurethane as Carbon Fiber Precursors
<p>The production of carbon fibers based on lignin reduces the cost and the environmental impact associated with carbon fiber manufacturing. However, the melt processing of lignin as a carbon fiber precursor is challenging due to its brittleness and limited thermoplastic behavior. For this reason we produce biopolymer blends based on Alcell organosolv hardwood lignin, hydroxypropyl modified Kraft hardwood, and a thermoplastic elastomer polyurethane (TPU). Samples with TPU content greater than 30% showed excellent melt processability and carbonization yield (35% carbon yield for the samples containing 30% of TPU). The thermal properties were analyzed by differential scanning calorimetry, rheology and thermogravimetric analysis. Fourier infrared measurements were utilized to explain the lignin/TPU interactions which governed the thermal and rheological behavior of the blends. SEM analysis showed that the blends produce a homogeneous structure which was void free after carbonization. These structurally complementary biopolymeric blends should open up new avenues for lignin valorization and bring closer the realization of the production of carbon fibers from biosources.</p>

Surface Characterization and Anti-Biofilm Effectiveness of Hybrid Films of Polyurethane Functionalized with Saponite and Phloxine B
<p>The main objective of this work was to synthesize composites of polyurethane (PU) with organoclays (OC) exhibiting antimicrobial properties. Layered silicate (saponite) was modified with octadecyltrimethylammonium cations (ODTMA) and functionalized with phloxine B (PhB) and used as a filler in the composites. A unique property of composite materials is the increased concentration of modifier particles on the surface of the composite membranes. Materials of different compositions were tested and investigated using physico-chemical methods, such as infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, contact angle measurements, absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy in the visible region. The composition of an optimal material was as follows: nODTMA/mSap = 0.8 mmol g−1 and nPhB/mSap = 0.1 mmol g−1. Only about 1.5% of present PhB was released in a cultivation medium for bacteria within 24 h, which proved good stability of the composite. Anti-biofilm properties of the composite membranes were proven in experiments with resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The composites without PhB reduced the biofilm growth 100-fold compared to the control sample (non-modified PU). The composite containing PhB in combination with the photodynamic inactivation (PDI) reduced cell growth by about 10,000-fold, thus proving the significant photosensitizing effect of the membranes. Cell damage was confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. A new method of the synthesis of composite materials presented in this work opens up new possibilities for targeted modification of polymers by focusing on their surfaces. Such composite materials retain the properties of the unmodified polymer inside the matrix and only the surface of the material is changed. Although these unique materials presented in this work are based on PU, the method of surface modification can also be applied to other polymers. Such modified polymers could be useful for various applications in which special surface properties are required, for example, for materials used in medical practice.</p>

Impact Compressive Properties of Polyurethane Foams with 3D Continuous Fibre Reinforcement
<p>Flexible and rigid polyurethane foams are used in applications subjected to impact loads. Integrating a three-dimensional, continuous fibre reinforcement meets high requirements for stiffness and strength. A fundamental comparison of the impact compressive properties was carried out for contributing to a reasonable choice between these variants. A rigid and flexible foam with a bulk density of 85 kg/m3 each was investigated with and without reinforcement by a warp-knitted spacer fabric. The material testing was conducted using a drop weight tester in accordance with a German standard. Three impacts are applied by a hammer with a flat surface larger than the area of the sample plate. Different impact energies were investigated and the deformation behaviour was analysed using a high-speed camera. Much higher energy absorptions at low deformations were found with rigid foam. Peak stresses and decelerations were lower with flexible foam if the load did not densify the material. Reinforcing the foams leads to an anisotropic deformation and improves the impact compressive properties, especially in the case of the flexible variant. The four materials analysed had a similar rebound and largely maintained their performance when subjected to the repeated impact load.</p>
