MCR LTER: Coral Reef: Spatial portfolios in coral metapopulations are shaped by spatiotemporal asynchrony in environmental conditions; Data for Srednick et al., 2026 Ecology Letters

Using wavelet analyses of a 19-year coral community timeseries from Moorea, French Polynesia, we quantified timescale-specific population synchrony in four common coral genera and evaluated the predictors of spatial portfolio effects. We detected synchrony within genera associated with synchrony in degree heating days, diurnal temperature range (DTR), and macroalgal cover at different timescales. Synchrony in DTR and macroalgal cover was associated with lower synchrony of Pocillopora and Porites populations, respectively. Population (for three of four genera) and environmental synchrony were stronger within than among habitats across timescales, underscoring the role of habitat-specific conditions in driving spatial synchrony and spatial portfolios. These results describe how the spatial and temporal scales of heterogeneity in environmental and ecological conditions determine synchrony in coral population dynamics and support a spatial portfolio effect, which may buffer coral metapopulations from island-scale collapse. Data in support of analyses for: Spatial portfolios in coral metapopulations are shaped by spatiotemporal asynchrony in environmental conditions. Published in Ecology Letters 2026.

Strategic selection of cryptocurrency investment portfolios based on discrete multi-criteria methods.

In recent years, cryptocurrencies have gone from an unknown plane to a protagonist one, with strategic investment in these assets becoming increasingly popular for organizations seeking to diversify their portfolios. However, cryptocurrencies carry a high risk due to their high volatility. Based on the multi-criteria decision making theory, a decision support system was developed for the design of business investment portfolios in cryptocurrencies, starting from the definition of criteria based on historical data that characterize returns and risks in different ways, all this for short time windows of 7 and 15 days. Then, the importance of criteria was analyzed by various methods and their impact was evaluated assuming changes in stock prices. Finally, multi-criteria methods were applied for the design of cryptocurrency investment portfolios in the above-mentioned time windows. The developed system is applicable to companies of any size, since the studied methods provide bigger rationality and objectivity to the strategic decision-making process. The resulting method can be extended in the future to incorporate criteria that take advantage of information on the market capitalization of cryptocurrencies, as well as capturing investor sentiment or the expected shortfall of the investment.

Data for: Optimizing a metabarcoding marker portfolio for species detection from complex mixtures of globally diverse fishes

DNA metabarcoding is used to enumerate and identify taxa in both environmental samples and tissue mixtures, but the effectiveness of particular markers depends on their sensitivity to the taxa involved. Using multiple primer sets that amplify different genes can mitigate biases in amplification efficiency, sequence resolution, and reference data availability, but few empirical studies have evaluated markers for complementary performance. Here, we assess the individual and joint performance of 22 markers for detecting species in a DNA pool of 98 species of marine and freshwater bony fishes from geographically and phylogenetically diverse origins. We find that a portfolio of four markers targeting 12S, 16S, and two regions of COI identifies 100% of reference taxa to family and nearly 60% to species. We then use these four markers to evaluate metabarcoding of heterogeneous tissue mixtures, using experimental fishmeal to test: 1) the tissue input threshold to ensure detection; 2) how read depth scales with tissue abundance; and 3) the effect of non-target material in the mixture on recovery of target taxa. We consistently detect taxa that make up >1% of fishmeal mixtures and can detect taxa at the lowest input level of 0.01%, but rare taxa (<1%) were detected inconsistently across markers and replicates. Read counts showed only a weak correlation with tissue input, suggesting they are not a reliable quantitative proxy for relative abundance. Despite the limitations arising from primer specificity and reference data availability, our results demonstrate that a modest portfolio of markers can perform well in detecting and identifying aquatic species in complex mixtures despite heterogeneity in tissue representation, phylogenetic affinities, and from a broad geographic range.

Portfolio simplification arising from a century of change in salmon population diversity and artificial production

1. Population and life-history diversity can buffer species from environmental variability and contribute to long-term stability through differing responses to varying conditions akin to the stabilizing effect of asset diversity on financial portfolios. While it is well known that many salmon populations have declined in abundance over the last century, we understand less about how different dimensions of diversity may have shifted. Specifically, how has diminished wild abundance and increased artificial production (i.e., enhancement) changed portfolios of salmon populations, and how might such change influence fisheries and ecosystems?

2. We apply modern genetic tools to century-old sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka) scales from Canada's Skeena River watershed to (i) reconstruct historical abundance and age-trait data for 1913–1947 to compare with recent information, (ii) quantify changes in population and life-history diversity and the role of enhancement in population dynamics, and (iii) quantify the risk to fisheries and local ecosystems resulting from observed changes in diversity and enhancement.

3. The total number of wild sockeye returning to the Skeena River during the modern era is 69% lower than during the historical era; all wild populations have declined, several by more than 90%. However, enhancement of a single population has offset declines in wild populations such that aggregate abundances now are similar to historical levels.

4. Population diversity has declined by 70%, and life-history diversity has shifted: populations are migrating from freshwater at an earlier age, and spending more time in the ocean. There also has been a contraction in abundance throughout the watershed, which likely has decreased the spatial extent of salmon provisions to Indigenous fisheries and local ecosystems. Despite the erosion of portfolio strength that this salmon complex hosted a century ago, total returns now are no more variable than they were historically perhaps in part due to the stabilizing effect of artificial production.

5. Policy implications. Our study provides a rare example of the extent of erosion of within-species biodiversity over the last century of human influence. Rebuilding a diversity of abundant wild populations – that is, maintaining functioning portfolios - may help ensure that watershed complexes like the Skeena are robust to global change.

LIFE Ilhas Barreira - D1 Project Milestone: Portfolio of UAV surveys database

The Ria Formosa Natural Park, a multi-barrier island system located in South Portugal, holds a variety of dune habitats of high ecological value. However, some of them are threatened by both human and natural pressures. An example are the grey dunes located at Barreta Island, which show clear signs of perturbation due to the settlement of two gull breeding colonies (west and east). The native grey dune vegetation coverage has been reduced within the nesting areas and replaced by ruderal species adapted to a higher nutrient content and gull physical disturbance (Talavera et al., 2022; Portela et al., 2023).

Aiming to restore the native grey dune vegetation, the LIFE Ilhas Barreira project (LIFE18 NAT/PT/000927) implemented several conservation measures. Among them were the installation of gull control and exclusion areas in the two nesting areas (details on the materials and configuration of the exclusion and control areas can be found at Deliverable C2), which were monitored using a DJI Phantom 4 Multispectral drone during a 2-year period (December 2020-December 2022).

The 5-band orthophotoimages available for download show the evolution of the vegetation coverage in these gull control and exclusion areas over the 2-year monitoring period.
