Water stable isotopes for streams and precipitation samples in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest, 2014-2023

Water samples have been collected for analysis of water stable isotopes (O18/16 and H2/H1) at different locations in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest and over different periods since 2014 in the HJ Andrews Experimental Forest. The database includes: 1) grab samples collected over the stream network of the Andrews Forest on multiple sampling campaigns during various flow conditions. In each of the campaigns, the samples were collected at approximately 50–100-meter intervals in 1st–5th order streams across the network; 2) water samples collected in the Andrews Forest every 1–3 weeks between 2014 and 2018 in streams (Lookout Creek, Mack Creek, McRae Creek, WS01, WS02, WS07, and WS08) and bulk precipitation from benchmark meteorological stations (PRIMET, MACK, and H15MET) between 2014 and 2023; 3) stream and precipitation samples collected in the Andrews Forest at high temporal resolution during discrete storm events at Mack Creek in 2015; and 4) weekly grab samples from Lookout Creek and selected tributaries.

Antarctic time series of temperature, precipitation, and stable isotopes in precipitation from the ECHAM5/MPI-OM-wiso past1000 climate model simulation

<p>This data set contains time series of two-metre air temperature (tas), surface temperature (ts), total precipitation (pr), oxygen-18 isotopic composition in precipitation (oxy), and deuterium isotopic composition in precipitation (dtr) from the past-millennium (800-1999 CE) simulation of the fully coupled ECHAM5/MPI-OM-wiso atmosphere-ocean general circulation model equipped with stable isotope diagnostics (Sjolte et al., 2018, Werner et al., 2016) used in the publication of M&uuml;nch et al. (2021).</p> <p>The data here are provided for the Antarctic region, i.e., all model grid cells south of 60&deg; S. The model&#39;s atmospheric component was run with a T31 spectral resolution (3.75&deg; x 3.75&deg;) and with 19 vertical levels, resulting in a total of N = 768 model grid cells covered by this data set. Note, however, that all time series off the continent of Antarctica have been set to NA values, so that the effectively available number of model grid cells is Neff = 442.</p> <p>Time series are provided at the original monthly resolution of the model output and on annual resolution obtained from the monthly resolution data. At annual resolution, the temperature and isotopic composition data are available as normal time averages and as precipitation-weighted time averages. In addition to the time series, the spatial field of time-invariant means is supplied, also as normal and precipitation-weighted time averages.</p> <p>Data are available as netcdf files and as R data files. In addition, processing code (bash and R scripts) are provided to reproduce the processing from monthly to annnual and time-invariant resolution and to read the data into the R data format. To process the R data, you will need the CRAN packages &quot;ncdf4&quot; and &quot;lubridate&quot;, and the package &quot;pfields&quot; available on GitHub (see References).</p>

Processed model output of the climate simulation in the study: The effects of diachronous surface uplift of the European Alps on regional climate and the isotopic composition of precipitation (δ18Op) [Boateng et al.]

<p><strong>The geodynamic evolution of the Alps suggests that the Alps did not rise monotonically due to the different post-collisional processes such as slab break-off. However, understanding such subsurface dynamics would require adequate knowledge about its surface uplift history. Stable isotope paleoaltimetry methods are widely used to infer past surface elevation using geologic archives. However, its accurate interpretation relies on attributing the extracted isotopic signal from proxies to surface uplift despite other influences such as climate. To resolve this issue, topographic sensitivity experiments across the Alps are used to investigate the impacts of the diachronous surface uplift on regional climate and &delta;18Op. The Atmospheric General Circulation Model ECHAM5 with water isotope tracking capabilities (ECHAM5-wiso) is used to simulate the climate with varied topographic scenarios. We present the processed (long-term means) model output of the relevant climate variables (i.e &delta;18Op, near-surface temperature, precipitation amount, near-surface meridional and zonal winds, mean sea level pressure, and elevation) in response to the changes in topography. The file names are representative of the topographic scenarios used for the simulations. For example, the file &ldquo;W2E1.nc&rdquo; is the model output produced by a topographic scenario in which the topography across the west-central Alps was set to 200% of its modern height, and the Eastern Alps were kept at 100%. The &ldquo;CTL.nc&rdquo; file contains model output from the control simulation that uses present-day topography. The datasets for instance can be used to select far-field sampling points for the &delta;-&delta; paleoaltimetry method that are not significantly affected by the topographic changes.</strong></p>

Sulfate isotopes in precipitation and streamwater, Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, 1966 - 1994

Sulfur deposition in the northeastern U.S. has been decreasing since the 1970s and there has been a concomitant decrease in the SO4 lost from drainage waters from forest catchments of this region. It has been established previously that the SO4 lost from drainage waters exceeds SO4 inputs in bulk precipitation, but the cause for this imbalance has not been resolved. The use of stable S isotopes and the availability of archived bulk precipitation and stream water samples at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (HBEF) in New Hampshire provided a unique opportunity to evaluate potential sources and sinks of S by analyzing the long-term patterns (1966–1994) of the d34S values of SO4. In bulk precipitation adjacent to the Ecosystem Laboratory and near Watershed 6 the d34S values were greater (mean: 4.5 and 4.2l, respectively) and showed more variation (variance: 0.49 and 0.30) than stream samples from Watersheds 5 (W5) and 6 (W6) (mean: 3.2 and 3.7; variance: 0.09 and 0.08, respectively). These results are consistent with other studies in forest catchments that have combined results for mass balances with stable S isotopes. These results indicate that for those sites, including the HBEF, where atmospheric inputs are 10 kg S ha-1 yr-1, most of the deposited SO4 cycles through the biomass before it is released to stream water. Results from W5, which had a whole-tree harvest in 1983–1984 showed that adsorption/desorption processes play an important role in regulating net SO4 retention for this watershed-ecosystem. Although the isotopic results suggest the importance of S mineralization, conclusive evidence that there is net mineralization has not yet been shown. However, S mass balances and the isotopic result are consistent with the mineralization of organic S being a major contributor to the SO4 in stream waters at the HBEF. These data were gathered as part of the Hubbard Brook Ecosystem Study (HBES). The HBES is a collaborative effort at the Hubbard Brook Experimental F

Data from: Carbon isotopes of C3 herbs correlate with temperature on removing the influence of precipitation across a temperature transect in the agro-pastoral ecotone of Northern China

Plant δ13C–temperature (δ-T) relation has been established in many systems and is often used as paleotemperature transfer function. However, it is still unclear about the exact contributions of temperature variation to plant 13C discrimination because of covariation between temperature and precipitation (aridity), which reduces confidence in reconstruction of paleoclimate. In this study, we measured carbon isotope composition (δ13C) of 173 samples of C3 perennial herbs from 22 sites across a temperature gradient along the 400 mm isohyet in the farming-pastoral zone of North China. The results showed that precipitation obviously affected the correlations of temperatures and foliar δ13C. After removing the influence of precipitation by analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), a more strongly positive relationship was obtained between site-mean foliar δ13C and annual mean temperature (AMT), with a regression coefficient of 0.1636‰/°C (p = .0024). For widespread species, Artemisia lavandulaefolia and Artemisia capillaries, the slopes (or coefficients) of foliar δ13C and AMT were significantly steeper (larger) than those of foliar δ13C and AMT where the precipitation influence was not excluded, whereas the δ-T coefficients of Polygonum persicaria and Leymus chinensis showed little change across the transect after deducting the precipitation effect. Moreover, the positive relationship between temperature and δ13C over the transect could be explained by soil moisture availability related to temperature. Our results may afford new opportunities for investigating the nature of past climate variability.
