Statistical analysis and dataset for: A high-throughput and sensitive method for food preference assays in walking insects
<p>Linked to the journal article published in bioRxiv (https://doi.org/10.1101/2024.04.10.588882).</p> <p><em><strong>Abstract</strong></em></p> <p>Insects pose significant challenges in both pest management and ecological conservation. Often, the most effective strategy is employing toxicant-laced baits, which must also be designed to specifically attract and be preferred by the targeted species for optimal species-specific effectiveness. However, traditional methods for measuring bait preference are either non-comparative, meaning that most animals only ever taste one bait, or suffer from methodological or conceptual limitations. Here we demonstrate the value of direct comparison food preference assays using the invasive and pest ant <em>Linepithema humile </em>as a model. We compare the food preference sensitivity of non-comparative (one visit to a food source) and sequential comparative (visiting one type of food then another) assays at detecting low levels of aversive quinine in sucrose solution. We then introduce and test a novel dual-choice feeder method for simultaneous comparative evaluation of bait preferences, testing its effectiveness in discerning between foods with varying quinine or sucrose levels. While the non-sequential assay could not detect aversion to 1.25mM quinine in 1M sucrose, the sequential comparative approach detected aversion to quinine levels as low as 0.94mM. The novel dual feeder method approach could detect aversion to quinine levels as low as 0.31mM, and also preference for 1M sucrose over 0.75M sucrose. The dual-feeder method, combines the sensitivity of comparative evaluation with high throughput, ease of use, and avoidance of interpretational issues. This innovative approach offers a promising tool for rapid and effective testing of bait solutions, contributing to the development of targeted control strategies. Moreover, the method can be easily modified for application to a wide range of walking insects, such as cockroaches, crickets, and beetles.</p>

European consumers ́ preference and willingness to pay for food products labelled as obtained by a circular farming system -in relation to environmental attitudes and consumption behaviours
<p>Data was collected with questionnaire-based research carried out in Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Poland, and Spain as part of a European project. The survey questions were designed to obtain the Willingness to pay using 2 different methodologies the discrete choice experiment and the open-end choice experiment. The survey also included questions about consumers environmental attitudes, and consumption behavior (purchase, use and recycling), to identify if them have influence on preferences towards more sustainable food products. The 3 analyzed food products were pork meat, milk and bread, all of them obtained through different agricultural production systems (circular, conventional, and organic agriculture). The sample was stratified in terms of gender and age to be representative to the average population in each country. Furthermore, respondents included in this study were those that are mainly, or in part responsible for the household food shopping. The questionnaire was translated to the languages of the countries involved in the data collection and pre-launched using a pilot sample of 50 consumers in each case study country. Finally, a total of 5,362 validated questionnaires were obtained. Data was collected online using the Qualtrics market research company, and Net panel market company for Hungary from June 2021 to January 2022.</p>
Preference ratings and 32 magnitude frequency response curves
<p>This repository comprises two CSV files: PreferenceRatings and MagnitudeFrequencyResponses. The former includes preference ratings obtained from 56 naive assessors (30 Danish---DK, 26 Japanese---JP) of 32 headphone curves over several music programs in several trials. The latter includes the magnitude frequency response curves evaluated by the assessors, expressed as gains of a 30-band graphic equalizer whose bands are centered between 31 Hz and 25 kHz. The curves were either derived from eight popular closed circumaural headphones, measured with a Brüel & Kjær Head and Torso Simulator 5128C, or otherwise obtained from the literature. The influence of choice on feeding preferences of marine herbivores
These data describe the preferences of two herbivores, the wavy turban snail Megastraea undosa and the Pacific purple urchin Strongylocentrotuts purpuratus for 14 macroalgal species relative to giant kelp Macrocystis pyrifera and the role chemical defenses play in influencing herbivory. Data cover the raw grams consumed and total phenolic content of 15 total macroalgal species found in the Santa Barbara Channel and are taken from three Santa Barbara Coastal Long Term Ecological Research sites (Mohawk Reef, Arroyo Burro Reef, and Naples Reef).

<p>The outbreak of COVID -19 forced most universities into distance education. Three didacticians and researchers from the University of Maribor, Slovenia: Kosta Dolenc, Mateja Ploj Virtič and Andrej Šorgo formed a self-initiated initiative project group during the COVID -19 epidemic and started the first project with the working title: The Side Effects of Forced Online Distance Education (FODE).</p> <p>The aim of the second study, conducted during the first wave of the epidemic in March 2020, was to investigate the response of university students to the new situation. Polidoc.net CODEBOOK: National and Regional Manifestos and other Political Documents Collected for the Research Projects "Representation in Europe: Congruence between Preferences of Elites and Voters" (REPCONG) and "The Impact of EU Cohesion Policy on European Identification" (COHESIFY)
<p>The Political Documents Archive http://www.polidoc.net/ contains election manifestos, coalition agreements, government declarations and various other documents of political actors from developed democracies. Currently, the archive builds on a stock of more than 3000 political documents from 20 European countries. The aim of the repository is to provide political texts in order to facilitate scholarly research in different areas of comparative politics such as party competition, coalition politics, legislative decision-making or electoral behavior.</p> <p>National electoral manifestos have been collected in the course of the REPCONG project ("Representation in Europe: Policy Congruence between Citizens and Elites"), and the archive includes party manifestos for regional elections in several European democracies. Because the process of European integration resulted in a strengthening of regions in EU member states and in countries that want to join the European Union, the relevance of the regional level for political decision-making has increased during the last decades. Therefore, also the policy profiles of regional parties are required to get a full picture of democratic responsiveness in European states across all levels of the political system. The collection of regional manifestos was supported by the COHESIFY project (www.cohesify.eu), funded under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. The aim of COHESIFY is to study whether the European Structural and Investment Funds affect people’s support for and identification with the European project.</p> <p>The archive is freely accessible (after a simple registration) and meant to foster rigorous research in these areas by enabling scholars to produce valid and reliable findings from empirical studies of textual data rather than unnecessarily struggling to obtain and process texts.</p>

Data on mobile phone activity are from the Google Mobility Reports. BMC Nephrology</p> <p><strong>Summary of study</strong></p> <p>An online cross-sectional survey for informal caregivers (e.g. family and friends) of people living with chronic kidney disease in the United Kingdom. Study aimed to examine informal caregivers' cognitive behavioural therapy self-help intervention preferences, and describe the caregiving situation (e.g. types of care activities) and informal caregiver's mental health (depression, anxiety and stress symptoms).</p> <p>Participants were eligible to participate if they were at least 18 years old, lived in the United Kingdom, and provided unpaid care to someone living with chronic kidney disease who was at least 18 years old.</p> <p>The online survey included questions regarding (1) informal caregiver's characteristics; (2) care recipient's characteristics; (3) intervention preferences (e.g. content, delivery format); and (4) informal caregiver's mental health. Informal caregiver's mental health was assessed using the 21 item Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS-21), which is composed of three subscales measuring depression, anxiety, and stress, respectively.</p> <p>Sixty-five individuals participated in the survey.</p> <p>See the published article for full study details.</p> <p><strong>Description of uploaded files</strong></p> <p>1.
