Prosthetic Sockets: Tensile Behavior of Vacuum Infiltrated Fused Deposition Modeling Sandwich Structure Composites

<p>The development of novel materials will enable a new generation of prosthetic devices to be built with additive manufacturing (AM). Vacuum infiltrated sandwich structure composites are a promising approach for building prosthetic sockets via AM. In this dataset, we test the tensile properties of 18 different composite material configurations using ASTM D638. These composites were manufactured using a custom vacuum infiltration method and had varying filament materials, infiltrated matrix materials, and print directions. Several material-matrix-print composites showed higher ultimate tensile strengths and reduced anisotropy compared to full-infill control samples. However, the mechanical properties of these composites were limited by a large degree of porosity due to the manufacturing method. Still, the results were promising enough to create a proof of concept prosthetic socket via the vacuum infiltration method. Future research should focus on reducing porosity defects and investigating additional material-matrix-print combinations.</p>

Instantaneous, three-dimensional velocity fields past a bio-prosthetic aortic valve measured in-vitro with tomographic particle image velocimetry.

<p>Each folder contains&nbsp;instantaneous, three-dimensional velocity vector data obtained in a simplified model of the&nbsp;aortic&nbsp;root with a distinct size and geometry (small, medium, large, and sinus-less). The specific geometry of each aortic root model is contained in the corresponding folder.</p> <p>The velocity data is structured in the following way: Two separate&nbsp;folders for&nbsp;velocity data in the &quot;ascending aorta&quot; domain (AAo) and in the &quot;sinus of Valsalva&quot; domain (SOV). Each domain contains velocity datasets for instances t=0.00, 0.03, 0.06, ..., 0.39 s (t000, t003, t006, ..., t039). Each velocity dataset&nbsp;contains&nbsp;N=16 phase-locked instantaneous 3D velocity fields.</p> <p>The data was acquired using tomographic particle image velocimetry and a custom built hydraulic setup capable of replicating normal physiological flow conditions in the human aorta (heart rate = 72 bpm, cardiac output = 4.8 l)</p> <p>Data format:</p> <p>- aortic root geometry: STL (the geometry is provided with respect to the&nbsp;reference frame of&nbsp;the velocity data)</p> <p>- velocity data: NPY (NumPy), shape= (N_nodes, 6), columns contain X, Y, Z, U, V, W data, where U, V, W are the X, Y, Z components of the instantaneous vector field</p>

A Prosthetic Hand with Integrated Sensing Elements for Selective Detection of Mechanical and Thermal Stimuli

<p>Flexible electronics have gained popularity because of their capability to combine softness and functionality. Soft resistive sensors are susceptible to mechanical stimuli and detecting temperature selectively remains a challenge. In this study, soft flexible thermistors are developed for detecting temperature changes based on the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) effect, selectively. By thermomechanical analysis and differential scanning calorimetry, it is observed that thermoplastic elastomers with higher thermal expansion and semicrystalline morphology result in a sensitive thermistor response. To achieve a high sensitivity in temperature and low sensitivity in the detection of mechanical stimulus, a low-carbon filler content is required. The opposite trend is seen for the piezoresistive sensors for mechanical strain detection. Both sensory material types are compatible with thermoplastic material extrusion-based additive manufacturing. The method is used for the fabrication of the sensing elements and an open-source prosthetic hand. The strain sensor detects the bending of the fingers and the temperature sensor detects the temperature when in contact with a heated surface, successfully. In addition, the temperature sensor is used as a tactile sensor to detect contact with a non-heated surface. Combining selective multisensory capabilities will significantly affect the future development of sensorized prosthetic devices and wearable electronics.</p>

Gait analysis results for different pediatric prosthetic knee prescription protocols

<p>Traditionally, children who need a prosthetic knee joint are not provided with one in their first prosthesis. An alternative Early Knee protocol provides a flexing knee in the first prosthesis. The purpose of this multi-site study was to examine kinematic outcomes during walking in separate groups of young children in an Early prosthetic knee prescription protocol (EK) versus a traditional prosthetic knee protocol (TK), along with a population of children without lower limb amputations. Eighteen children aged 12 months to five years were recruited for this study at two clinical sites, six in each of the three groups. Children in the two prosthesis groups had unilateral limb loss and had been treated at one site with the TK protocol or at another with the EK protocol. All children walked at self-selected speed while kinematic data were collected using similar Vicon motion analysis systems. Data include joint angles, extrema, and ranges of motion used for the determination of temporal and spatial gait parameters and swing-phase clearance adaptations. </p>

According to legend the arm of Royal Secretary Olof Sverkersson Elfkarl, in office during the reign of Swedish kings [Johan III](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_III_of_Sweden), [Sigismund](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sigismund_III_Vasa) and [Karl IX](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_IX_of_Sweden). Olof Sverkersson was called Olof Turncoat in many parts of the country and in [Finland](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland) (which was a part of [Sweden](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sweden) at that time) they called him Olof Perkelson, i.e. Olof Son of the Devil. The arm was included in the [Skokloster](https://goo.gl/Mspd5w) collection in the 1750's when a substantial amount of objects were transferred from Salsta manor, previously owned by the [Bielke](https://goo.gl/F78x9L) family, to Skokloster. Evaluation of synovial calprotectin by using a lateral flow stool test for the diagnosis of prosthetic joint infections

<p>The analysis of synovial fluid is a crucial step in the diagnostic process of prosthetic joint infections (PJI) and several studies illustrated the efficacy of synovial calprotectin in supporting the diagnosis of PJI. In this study, synovial calprotectin was analyzed by a commercial stool test to explore whether the detected levels might predict PJIs. The synovial fluids of 55 were analyzed. Calprotectin levels were compared to other synovial biomarkers of PJI. Of the 55 synovial fluids, 13 patients were diagnosed with PJI and 42 with an aseptic failure of the implant. The specificity, sensitivity, and AUC of calprotectin resulted 0.90, 0.85, and 0.86 (95%CI: 0.72-0.99), respectively with a set threshold of 226.5 &micro;g/g. The values of calprotectin had a moderate and statistically relevant correlation with the synovial leucocyte counts (rs = 0.54, p = 0.0003) and percentage of synovial neutrophils (rs = 0.68, p = 0.0000). From this analysis, it can be concluded that synovial calprotectin is a valuable biomarker that correlates with other established indicator of local infection, and the use of a commercial lateral flow stool test could be a cost-effective strategy delivering rapid and reliable results and supporting the diagnostic process of PJI.</p>
