Incentive mechanisms and the provision of public goods: Field experiment data for testing alternative economic frameworks to supply ecosystem restoration on Virginia's Eastern Shore: 2008 data.

This dataset consists of participant responses in one of two economic experiments conducted on Virginia's Eastern Shore during 2008 and 2009 by Elizabeth C. Smith used to gauge resident preferences and willingness-to-pay for ecosystem restoration activities. This dataset was designed to be used to examine a practical method to implement an individualized pricing approach to public good provision, grounded in Lindahl's marginal benefit theory. The study's focus was on ecosystem valuation and market approaches that have potential to provide public goods, examining the potential to generate revenues for public goods from consumers. While willingness-to-pay measurement techniques have been used to assess preferences for many environmental goods, this research goes a step further to explore real money auctions that generate revenues sufficient to pay for restoration activities. The data from the field experiments conducted in coastal Virginia were used, along with laboratory experiment data, to evaluate the performance of auction mechanisms in generating revenues relative to potential (Hicksian) willingness to pay for marginal increments in public goods. The field execution of this experiment involved residents of Virginia's Eastern Shore and local public goods. This application involved half-acre increments of ecosystem restoration for sea grass habitat in coastal lagoons, plantings for migratory bird habitat, and, in some auctions, clam-based increments of water quality services, defined as delaying the harvest of clams for six months beyond normal harvest by an existing aquaculture firm. To perform these tasks, participants were provided a budget, between $90 and $150. The auctioneer described for participants the ecosystem services that may result from additional ecosystem restoration associated with each activity. City of Seattle, Seattle Public Utilities, Marbled Murrelet Habitat Enhancement Experiment 2010, Cedar River Municipal Watershed, King County, WA

This experimental project aims to enhance nesting habitat for the marbled murrelet through active habitat restoration in second-growth forests. The project was conducted within the Cedar River Municipal Watershed (CRMW) in Washington State, with the goal of determining if silvicultural treatments, such as creating canopy gaps and tree topping, can accelerate the growth of tree branches suitable for murrelet nesting. The project was implemented in 2010 at a 75-acre site within CRMW. Treatments included removing surrounding trees to increase canopy openness ("gaps"), topping trees to stimulate branch growth, and combining both methods. The site was specifically chosen for its proximity to the murrelet detections in nearby old growth stands, and site suitability in terms of tree age, species composition, and manageable topography. Data collected focused on tree growth and structure characteristics critical to murrelet nesting. A total of 48 trees received treatments, which were systematically compared to untreated controls to assess outcomes. The initial implementation confirmed logistical feasibility and budget adherence, with plans for monitoring and resampling established for the 2020s. If successful, these techniques could be replicated across various environmental conditions to expand viable nesting habitat for the marbled murrelet, directly supporting conservation objectives outlined in the CRMW Habitat Conservation Plan.

<p>This dataset contains two files created for the experiments presented in the article: Publication and Maintenance of RDB2RDF Views Externally Materialized in Enterprise Knowledge Graphs.</p> <p><strong>mapR2RML_MusicBrainz_completo.txt</strong><strong>:</strong>&nbsp;We created the&nbsp;R2RML mapping&nbsp;for translating MBD data into the&nbsp;Music Ontology vocabulary, which is used for publishing the LMB view. The LMB view was materialized using the&nbsp;D2RQ tool. It took 67 minutes to materialize the view with approximately 41.1 GB of NTriples. This study examines the impact of communication on public good provisioning in an artefactual field experiment conducted with 216 villagers from small, rural communities in northern Namibia. In line with previous experimental findings, we observe a strong increase in cooperation when face-to-face communication is allowed before decision-making. We additionally introduce a condition in which participants cannot discuss the dilemma but talk to their group members about an unrelated topic prior to learning about the<br>public good game. It turns out that this condition already leads to higher cooperation rates, albeit not as high as in&nbsp;the condition in which discussions about the social dilemma are possible. The setting in small communities also allows investigating the effects of pre-existing social relationships between group members and their interaction with communication.We find that both types of communication are primarily effective among socially more distant group members, which suggests that communication and social ties work as substitutes in increasing cooperation. Further analyses rule out better comprehension of the game and increased mutual expectations of one&rsquo;s group members&rsquo; contributions as drivers for the communication effect. Finally, we discuss the role of personal and injunctive norms to keep commitments made during discussions.</p>

Soils on Crete are under imminent threat of desertification, characterized by loss of vegetation, water erosion, and subsequently, loss of soil. Several large-scale studies have estimated average soil erosion on the island between 6 and 8 Mg/ha/year, but more localized investigations assess soil losses one order of magnitude higher. An experiment initiated in 2017, under the framework of the SoilCare H2020 EU project, aimed to evaluate the effect of different management practices on the soil erosion. The experiment was set up in control versus treatment experimental design including different sets of treatments, targeting the most important cultivations on Crete (olive orchards, vineyards, fruit orchards). The minimum-to-no tillage practice was adopted as an erosion mitigation practice for the olive orchard study site, while for the vineyard site, the cover crop practice was used. For the fruit orchard field, the crop-type change procedure (orange to avocado) was used. The experiment demonstrated that soil-improving cropping techniques have an important impact on soil erosion, and as a result, on soil water conservation that is of primary importance, especially for the Mediterranean dry regions. The demonstration of the findings is of practical use to most stakeholders, especially those that live and work with the local land.</p>

<p>Dataset supporting publication: &ldquo;Design Framework and Laboratory Experiments for Helix and Slinky Type Ground Source Heat Exchangers for Retrofitting Projects&rdquo;&nbsp;(publication available for download:&nbsp;<a href="https://zenodo.org/record/7436458">GEOFIT Zenodo</a>).</p> <p>The focus of the experimental work was on shallow spiral geothermal heat exchanger configurations. Real-scale experiments were carried out for vertically oriented spiral collectors (helix) in sand and soil. One objective was to develop a measurement concept in laboratory environment to create a framework for a validated database. This database serves as the basis for further and new development of engineering design tools. To achieve the highest possible data-point density in the observed environment, temperature sensors and a fiber-optic temperature measurement system (DTS) were used. Soil probes were taken in situ before and after the measurements and analyzed at a thermophysical laboratory to determine material properties. The heat flow was controlled by an electric heating cable, which was installed in the form of a spiral-shaped heat exchanger in a 1 m&sup3; container. To guarantee constant boundary conditions, the measurements were carried out in a climate chamber at a defined ambient temperature. The evaluation of the transient response behavior is spatially resolved. The results are coordinate-based temperature points, which describe temperature gradients in all axes of the container over time, which are combined with known soil properties. The collected data was used to develop computational fluid dynamic (CFD) models, which are used to extend the variety of geometry and soil configurations for developing new design tools.</p>

Results and analysis script from a discrete choice experiment assessing public preferences for rewilding in the Oder Delta

<p>1. Rewilding is an emerging paradigm in restoration science, and is increasingly gaining popularity as a cost-effective ecosystem restoration option. A rewilding framework was recently proposed that contains three integral components: restoring trophic complexity, allowing for stochastic disturbances, and enhancing species' potential to disperse. However, as of yet, there has been limited quantitative analysis looking at public preference for rewilding and each of its elements.</p> <p>2. We used a discrete choice experiment approach to determine public preference for rewilding in the Oder Delta. The unique geographical context of the Oder Delta, spreading evenly across two countries, allowed us to analyze differences between the German (n = 1,005) and Polish (n = 1,066) samples.</p> <p>3. In both countries, we found respondents were willing to pay for rewilding interventions when compared against a status quo option. Notably, preferences were strongest for restoring trophic complexity through promoting the comeback of large mammals.</p> <p>4. In addition, we found respondents living locally to the study region had significantly different preferences than the nationwide samples, exhibiting negative willingness to pay for the restoration of natural flooding regimes and the presence of large predator species.</p>
