Effects of paternal temperature on larval performance in purple sea urchin

The data is used to support the manuscript “Leach, T. S., Hofmann, G. E. (2023). Marine heatwave temperatures enhance larval performance but are meditated by paternal thermal history and inter-individual differences in the purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. Frontiers in Physiology. DOI: 10.3389/fphys.2023.1230590”

SBC LTER: Effect of algal diet on consumption, growth, and gonad weight of the purple sea urchin (Strongylocentrotus pupuratus)

Data are for an experiment evaluating the effects of algal diet on consumption, growth, and gonad weight of an important kelp forest grazer, the purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus pupuratus over a 13 week period (November 2010 - February 2011). Four co-occurring species of macroalgae known to be part of its diet were offered: two kelps Macrocystis pyrifera and Pterygophora californica, and the red algae Chondracanthus corymbiferus and Rhodymenia californica. During 9 consectutive trials in a controlled laboratory setting, we measured consumption, test (exoskeleton) growth, jaw growth, change in whole body wet weight and gonad weight of urchins fed one of five experimental diets. The algae chosen represent a large proportion (> 75%) of the algal biomass in Santa Barbara Channel reefs (California, USA). Changes in the availability of these four species of macroalgae could have large implications for the performance of purple sea urchins and consequently, for the structure of subtidal reef communities. These data are presented in a paper describing the effects of five southern California macroalgal diets on the consumption, growth and gonad weight of the purple sea urchin: Matthew C. Foster, M., Byrnes, J. E. K., D. C. Reed. 2015. Effects of five southern California macroalgal diets on consumption, growth and gonad weight in the purple sea urchin, Strongylocentrotus purpuratus. SBC LTER: Reef: The size-dependent functional response of lobster foraging on purple urchin

These data summarize the results of a size-dependent functional response experiment in which California spiny lobster (Panulirus interruptus) foraged on purple urchins (Strongylocentrotus purpuratus). Lobster of different sizes foraged on one of three different size classes of urchins at 4-6 different densities of urchin. Data is used to support manuscript: DiFiore, B.P. and A.C. Stier. 2023. Variation in body size drives spatial and temporal variation in lobster-urchin interaction strength. Journal of Animal Ecology

Purple is the New Green: Biopigments and Spectra of Earth-like Purple Worlds

With more than 5,500 detected exoplanets, the search for life is entering a new era. Using life on Earth as our guide, we look beyond green landscapes to expand our ability to detect signs of surface life on other worlds. While oxygenic photosynthesis gives rise to modern green landscapes, bacteriochlorophyll-based anoxygenic phototrophs can also color their habitats and could dominate a much wider range of environments on Earth-like exoplanets. Here we characterize the reflectance spectra of a collection of purple sulfur and purple non-sulfur bacteria from a variety of anoxic and oxic environments. We present models for Earth-like planets where purple bacteria dominate the surface and show the impact of their signatures on the reflectance spectra of terrestrial exoplanets. Our research provides a new resource to guide the detection of purple bacteria and improves our chances of detecting life on exoplanets with upcoming telescopes. Our biological pigment database for purple bacteria and the high-resolution spectra of Earth-like planets, including ocean worlds, snowball planets, frozen worlds, and Earth analogs, are available online, providing a tool for modelers and observers to train retrieval algorithms, optimize search strategies, and inform models of Earth-like planets, where purple is the new green.

Min publication:https://doi.org/10.1093/mnras/stae601

lc992@cornell.edu

Greater flowering and response to flooding in Lythrum virgatum than L. salicaria (purple loosestrife)

Newly introduced trait diversity can spur rapid evolution and facilitate local adaptation in the introduced plant Lythrum salicaria. The horticultural plant L. virgatum might further introduce meaningful trait variation by escaping into established L. salicaria populations or by hybridizing with L. salicaria. Although many experiments have focused on L. salicaria genotypes, relatively little is known about L. virgatum ecology. We used a greenhouse common garden to compare traits and flood response of L. salicaria and L. virgatum collected from two sources each in their native range. We tested the hypotheses that these two wetland taxa have comparable responses to flooding (inundation), and that flood tolerance correlated to higher fitness. Flooding produced stronger stress responses in L. virgatum. Compared to L. salicaria, L. virgatum shifted more aboveground allocation away from reproduction, decreased inflorescence biomass by 40% more, and produced 7% more stem aerenchymatous phellum, a specialized tissue that maintains aeration. Despite these more pronounced responses to flooding stress, L. virgatum had higher fitness (inflorescence biomass and reproductive allocation) than L. salicaria. Overall, L. virgatum differed from L. salicaria in functionally important ways. Lythrum virgatum persisted under flooding and produced more reproductive biomass than L. salicaria under both flooded and non-flooded conditions. However, inundation stressed L. virgatum more than L. salicaria. Lythrum virgatum is likely able to establish in the wetland habitats in which L. salicaria prevails but may possess broader habitat tolerances.
